Chapter 148: Do It This Way
Many researchers who had previously been upset changed their impression of Xiang Ning when they noticed his curiosity and willingness to learn. They were also delighted to find that he was a fast learner, especially in the aspect of dimensional rings.
“Old Jin, in my opinion, although it is correct to follow Roy’s Law, I think it would be better if we combine this with Zano’s Quantum Theory. What do you think?” Xiang Ning was squeezing his brain for jargon. He was already using up all the knowledge he had learned over the past few days. He could no longer dismiss numbers as ‘making him uncomfortable’ like his first day here; he had to use jargon or he wouldn’t be trusted.
“Hmm, let me see.” Old Jin nodded and ran calculations according to his suggestion. After about five minutes, Old Jin frowned. “Ning, although using both Roy’s Law and Zano’s Quantum Theory does help a little… wait, if Zano doesn’t work, what about Thicke’s Quantum Theory?”
The researchers all looked over when Old Jin suddenly turned excited.
“Hey, it’s that kid again. He’s only been here for a few days, why does Old Jin like him so much?” Wang Jiayan sourly lamented.
Not just him, even the other researchers were jealous.
“Hahaha, that’s right! We did it, we’ve settled another piece of data! This calculation method will be extremely helpful in space travel, too. We can incorporate this into the kinetic mechanisms of the battleships. Xiang Ning, you’ve made great contributions! It’s no wonder you’re Mr. Dong’s disciple,” chuckled Old Jin.
The researchers were shocked. They solved another problem again? How many problems had they solved in just a few days? The entire team’s total number of problems solved was fewer than this grandfather-grandson pair. And this solution could be used for the battleships’ kinetic systems. Xiang Ning’s random suggestions could even be applied in other places now?
In truth, Xiang Ning was equally surprised. Although giving Old Jin hints for solving problems was successful, he didn’t know it would be applicable elsewhere.
When everyone saw Xiang Ning’s confused expression, some of them started to question if they were researchers themselves.“Come, let’s carry on!” Old Jin was very excited. If they continued at this speed, within two years, they would be able to complete all the calculations required for a dimensional ring.
To the rest of the researchers’ dismay, the two solved another three problems before Xiang Ning felt they should stop for the day. He realized they had reached the limit of his ability to use technical jargon. Any further and he would require higher-level jargon. No, no, it was time for him to study.
“Sorry Old Jin, I think it’s time for me to go study. Master’s probably waiting for me.”
“No worries, just go when we finish this problem. I’ll talk to Mr. Dong.”
“Ah, no, Old Jin… I can’t use the appropriate jargon to solve this problem, I’d like to study and fill the gaps first,” Xiang Ning solemnly explained. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with what he said, but it hurt many people’s egos.
What did he mean by that? So he already had the solutions and was just lacking the appropriate jargon? They did not believe him.
Wait, it seemed like… he was doing something? Just when they wanted to stop him.…
Old Jin let out a hearty laugh. “I’ve always said that the young must be bold. Tell me what ideas you have, perhaps they’ll work?”
“Uh… alright. Actually, I think the sequence of the numbers in this data set doesn’t match the previous few sets.”
What the hell? The arrangement of numbers? The first time he didn’t like the way the numbers looked, now he was criticizing the way they were arranged? Were they making him uncomfortable? It was maddening. If Old Jin didn’t like him so much, or he wasn’t Dong Qianyi’s disciple, they would have kicked him out. He was trampling on their beliefs!
Xiang Ning awkwardly scratched his head in the face of the hostile glares. Even he thought his explanation was stupid. His reasoning was too outlandish and not up-to-standard, either; he needed to study more.
However, without anyone noticing, Wang Jiayan was already silently comparing the figures to what Xiang Ning had said.
On the other side, Old Jin was still defending Xiang Ning from ridicule. The first time around, Xiang Ning’s suggestion was only to round up the figure. It was something that anyone could verify with some mental calculation and hadn’t taken much time. That was why they could apply it quickly and found that it worked. But this time, it didn’t matter how talented Xiang Ning was, his reasoning of the numbers not being arranged right merely sounded like nonsense. Wasn’t it useless input?
“Eh, Old Jin, you can’t keep spoiling him. Although he’s talented, we can’t always let him have his way, right?”
“Yeah, Old Jin, we must always be rigorous as researchers.”
They remembered the tragedy that was the day Xiang Ning arrived with his first suggestion. Red lights continuously flashed for the rest of the day and they did not see the green light flash once. Outsiders almost thought there was a fire. That was why they thought he had only gotten lucky.
“Right, my seniors are right. Old Jin, if there’s nothing else, I will go learn from my master now.” Xiang Ning hurriedly nodded. The rest of the researchers were right, he must use proper terms.
Suddenly, the green light lit up. The crowd paused—another problem had been solved!
The crowd turned around and realized that Wang Jiayan was standing there, stunned. Who am I? What was I doing? What just happened?
He was only trying out the method, absolutely not because he’d been influenced by Xiang Ning and had a good impression of him. He did have a similar hunch as Xiang Ning. Who knew? It worked. When he snapped back to his senses, he realized there was a crowd behind him, admiringly staring at him.
“Not bad, Jiayan! You were so quiet, who knew, you’d solved a problem!”
“Yeah, using a method much more rigorous than someone else.”
“Quick, walk us through your thought process.”
With all eyes on him, Wang Jiayan’s cheeks burned, especially when Xiang Ning watched him in anticipation.
“What is it? Tell us! Or are you unwilling to tell us how you solved it?”
“Yeah, that would not be nice.”
In the face of their insistence, Wang Jiayan hesitated, then finally blurted his answer.
Then….
“Heh… hehehe.” The crowd’s faces twitched, while Xiang Ning felt an oncoming headache. Why was it him again?
