Ch82- Last Barrier

Mito was still reeling from the revelation, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and shock. "So you will... go back?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kai nodded, his gaze steady on hers. "I've been searching for a way over the past month, and I'm close to finding it. Soon, Mikoto and I have to leave."

His words were like a punch to her gut, leaving her breathless. The realization of what he meant when he asked her to sense his emotions hit her. The love and regret, kindness, and longing she had sensed weren't just feelings. They were his feelings for her. He too had feelings for her, but it was impossible. How could anything happen between them when he was bound to leave, to return to the future?

Mito stared at her hands in her lap, her mind buzzing with questions and thoughts. The realization that Kai, the man she'd grown to admire and harbor feelings for, was from the future was a lot to process. Not to mention, the confirmation that he reciprocated her feelings, albeit in a complex and heartbreaking manner, was a bitter pill to swallow.

After a moment of silence, Mito finally found her voice. It was steadier than she had anticipated, but there was an undercurrent of determination in her tone. "Can I come with you?" she asked, meeting Kai's eyes, unflinchingly.

Kai was taken aback. He hadn't anticipated this question. For ten long minutes, there was silence. During this time, Mito felt as if her heart was lodged in her throat. Each passing second felt like an eternity. When Kai finally broke the silence, his words fell like a blow. "I don't think you can," he said.

Mito's shoulders slumped at his words. "Why?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She had misunderstood him. In her mind, his refusal was personal, as if he didn't want her to come along.

Kai, sensing her misunderstanding, explained. "You were a... prominent figure in our timeline." He paused, letting the implication of his words sink in. Mito's mind flashed back to their first encounter, when she'd mentioned her name, and Mikoto had instinctively addressed her as 'Mito-sama.'

"Oh," Mito said, realization dawning on her. Kai continued, "Time is sensitive. If you were to come to the future, it could change the timeline. That change might prevent me from ever stepping into the whirlpool, which in turn would mean that I wouldn't come back in time. Then, I wouldn't be able to take you into the future, which would fix the timeline. You see, it's a paradox."

Mito was silent as she processed Kai's explanation. She was a Fuinjutsu Mistress; she was well-versed in the complex intricacies of the sealing arts. The impossibility of the situation dawned on her, yet she wasn't willing to concede defeat just yet. "I still want to," she whispered, her gaze steady on Kai.

Her determination tugged at something in Kai's chest. He studied her face, looking for any hint of hesitation. But all he found was determination. He sighed heavily, understanding the weight of her resolution. "Mito, it's not that simple. The risk of causing a temporal paradox is too great. Not just for you and me, but for the entire timeline."

"But..." Mito started, the words caught in her throat. Her mind was reeling, and she felt as if she were caught in a whirlwind of emotions. "Isn't there... isn't there any other way?"

Kai studied Mito's earnest face, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. He understood her desperation, her desire to hold onto something, someone, that brought a ray of hope in her otherwise confined life. But he also knew the risks involved. He knew the dangers of tampering with time, the unforeseeable consequences that it could lead to. "I'm sorry, Mito," he said, his voice gentle. "But I cannot risk it."

A heavy silence filled the air between them. Mito looked down, her eyes filled with a mix of disappointment and resignation. Kai watched her, the weight of his decision pressing heavily on him. He wished there were an easier solution, a way to ease Mito's disappointment, but he knew better than to make promises he couldn't keep.

"I understand," Mito finally said, her voice barely audible. She rose from her seat, her eyes avoiding Kai's. "I... I should go."

As she turned to leave, Kai reached out and grabbed her wrist. Mito turned back to face him, surprise clear on her face. "Mito," he said, holding her gaze. "Regardless of what happens, I want you to remember that you're more than just a Fuinjutsu Mistress. You're a strong, intelligent woman with a big heart. Don't let anything, or anyone, make you forget that."

His words hung in the air as Mito stood, her heart pounding in her chest. She swallowed hard, feeling a strange mix of gratitude and sorrow. "Thank you, Kai," she said, her voice shaky. "I won't forget."

With that, she turned and left, her figure disappearing into the night. Kai watched her go, feeling a strange sense of loss. He knew he had made the right decision, yet he couldn't shake off the guilt. He sighed heavily, his gaze shifting to the night sky.

He was pulled from his thoughts by a soft touch on his arm. Mikoto sat beside him, her eyes filled with understanding. "It was the right thing to do," she said softly. "We can't risk the timeline."

Kai nodded, looking at her. "I know," he replied.

Getting into their make-shift home carved from the big rock, they descended into their bedroom. The sound of water droplets echoed throughout the stone walls, creating a serene symphony only nature could perform. Their bedroom, a place of warmth and comfort, harbored the large bed where they spent the month together.

Mikoto approached the bed, her fingers tracing the worn-out sheets, a fond memory surfacing in her eyes. The countless nights where Mikoto hugged Kai from behind, where she held onto him, resonating her emotions into his sturdy back. Yet, he never made a move. He always respected her boundaries, despite her silent yearning for him to cross those lines.

His recent admission stirred something within her. A spark of courage, a need for more. And Mito's words... they held the weight of truth and opened a Pandora's box of emotions. Yes, Kai was younger, he could easily be her son, but the heart didn't comprehend age or logic; it only knew love, and her love for him was as real as the beating in her chest. She felt his affection too; an unspoken bond, a tacit understanding, transcending beyond mere words.

Holding onto him, this time she was determined to take the last step. She knew she had to be assertive, as Kai wasn't good at things like these. A soft sigh of anticipation left her lips as she moved towards him, the room seemingly closing in on them. Mikoto reached up, her fingers gently cradling his face. His skin was warm, a stark contrast to his ice-blue eyes that mirrored the winter sky. Her heart pounded in her chest, her own eyes lingering on his lips. They were lush, rich, and all too tempting.

She mustered up the courage, deciding to make the first move. "Kai," she said softly, her voice barely a whisper against the silence of the room. He turned to look at her, their eyes locking. There was a kind of understanding in his gaze, a quiet acceptance that spoke volumes. But he didn't make the move, waiting for her to cross the boundary they both knew existed.
