Kikori no Isekai Tan

Chapter 4 - That's All I Can Teach You

“Eh, you know all that just from looking at the axe?”

“Fufu. No matter how much you polish it, you can tell if a blade has cut living beings. Surprisingly, sitting in this position requires a variety of qualifications, you know?”

She said with a laugh, pushing the axe back readily and tapping the counter.

“Well then, Kikori-san, I’ll take your wooden tag.”

“Ah, yes.”

Kikori handed over the wooden tag at her prompting. She quickly took it and handed him something resembling a bronze pendant.

“What is this?”

“It’s like an identification card that represents your trustworthiness. This is commonly known as the proof of a bronze-rank adventurer. It’s given to shiny new recruits.”

As the receptionist explained that the card also affected things like discount rates, Kikori understood. Given the nature of this defensive city, they could never have too many adventurers.

That’s precisely why they encourage the adventurers to work by giving them preferential treatment and creating an internal promotion system to differentiate them through such “identification cards”.

“It’s a well-thought-out system.”

“Fufu can you tell? You seem quite mature.”

“Eh, r-really?”

“Yes. Most people get excited when they see it, but you seem quite calm. Like an adult.”

He had made a mistake again. His past life interfered once more.

Kikori felt his blood run cold.

He struggled to figure out how to respond and after thinking desperately, he shouted, “Wh-Whoa,” but Gantz, standing beside him, roughly placed a hand on his head.

“Don’t force yourself to act strangely. Being realistic is a talent in my book.”

“Sorry. It feels like I touched on something I shouldn’t have.”

As Gantz and the receptionist comforted him, Kikori’s face turned red.

He wished he could navigate life more skilfully. He kept wishing for that, but reality never seemed to cooperate.

As he pondered this, the receptionist pulled out something resembling a megaphone from under the counter and called out behind Kikori.

“Anyway, Kikori-san! You are now officially recognized as a new adventurer! Everyone, a round of applause!”

“Welcome to the edge of the world!”

“Don’t go dying on us out of nowhere!”

He received a mix of unintelligible cheers and applause. At least they were welcoming him, so Kikori bowed his head… which made the applause grow louder.

“Well, you’re an adventurer now. From here on out, it’s live or die. Make sure to stay alive.”

“Yes. Thank you very much, Gantz-san.”

“…..”

Gantz looked down at Kikori and once again patted his head.

“I have no intention to teach you everything from scratch. No matter what you teach, those who will die will die. This is a place where even fancy sword-wielding nobles don’t last half a day.”

“….Yes.”

“Don’t hesitate. That’s all I can teach you.”

Having said that, Gantz waved his hand at Kikori and walked away.

Thus began Kikori’s life as an adventurer.

Translator notes – I translated さん = san as “Mr.” in chapter 2 before but I decided from now on to just leave it as –san since it feels quite weird addressing a kid as “Mr.”.
