35. The Drowner King.
"What the hell is that?!", Allen exclaimed in surprise, freeing his left hand to wipe his eyes.
When he opened them again, the blood-red vision had disappeared. It was just a warning.
"Allen, what's going on?"
Vesemir shouted loudly from a distance. The Witcher master had already fought his way to the cave entrance, with scattered corpses lying behind him.
Ghostly blue, dark red, murky yellow.
The air was filled with the peculiar stench of drowners. A smell that made one want to retch.
If Allen had seen this scene ten days ago, he would have been scared out of his wits. But after ten days as a Witcher apprentice, having killed so many drowners, Allen had become accustomed to this hellish sight.
"Vesemi..."
Allen didn't have time to respond. The scene before his eyes changed drastically again. Two blood-red banners, almost black, appeared at the top of Allen's vision.
[Warning! Warning! Warning]
[Detected the fluctuation of the Conjunction of the Spheres! Detected the fluctuation of the Conjunction of the Spheres!]
As the banners flashed, the scenery before Allen seemed to flicker. Heads, limbs, and stone walls twisted and tilted.
No!
The cave walls were really shaking. Several drowner heads jumped up, flying around from the vibration.
"Boom! Boom!"
The world seemed to be roaring. Tiny stones mixed with dust fell from the top of the cave.
For a moment. The Witcher apprentice felt his whole body falling. The black sky was approaching, the brown ground receding. For the first time, Allen realized that during an earthquake, the sky and earth could indeed change colors.
"Allen! Allen!", Vesemir shouted anxiously.
In the face of such a catastrophe, even a strong Witcher master could barely protect himself. The drowners outside the cave had all been thrown to the ground by the sudden earthquake.
Vesemir stood at the cave entrance, a few steps away from the clear daylight. But he didn't move forward; instead, he clung to the rock wall, trying to get closer to his apprentice.
"Allen! Allen!", The Witcher master shouted again.
The Witcher apprentice had no energy to respond. He felt like a tiny boat in a storm, being tossed by the power of the entire world.
"Boom!"
With another strong tremor, Allen was thrown into the air by the earth without resistance. The dark rock walls magnified instantly before his eyes.
"Bang!"
Leather met rock, flesh met rock, bone met rock.
"Ah!"
The Witcher apprentice couldn't help but scream. He felt his left arm break, pain engulfing his whole body. Was the Conjunction of the Spheres really this strong?
"I was too careless!"
Using the cotton cloth on his shoulder armor, Allen wiped the blood from his eyes. Ignoring the pain, he clung to a nearby rock pillar. Then he opened his inventory and used five portions of drowner heart essence in quick succession. The cold liquid entered his stomach, a weak warmth rising. Drowner heart essence couldn't heal injuries but could relieve pain, and with full stamina, the body's recovery speed increased significantly.
Soon.
The earth's anger gradually subsided.
"Allen! Allen!" ,Vesemir's anxious voice rang out again.
The Witcher apprentice was about to answer when a familiar mechanical sound suddenly appeared in his ear.
[Ding! Main quest activated: Visitor from Another World (Kill the Drowner King 0/1)]
"Croak——!!!"
A thunderous roar echoed.
Allen turned toward the sound, his face instantly pale.
Damn!
"That's not a drowner!"
...
At the cave entrance.
"Allen! Allen!"
As the tremors subsided, Vesemir quickly rushed towards his apprentice.
"Buzz!"
The Witcher master's chest medallion suddenly vibrated violently.
Vesemir stopped, crouched slightly, and looked around.
"Croak——!!!"
Following the sound, the Witcher master's amber cat eyes contracted instantly.
A monster suddenly appeared in the dark depths of the cave. Standing roughly four meters tall, its muscles bulging, its massive form made the spacious cave seem cramped. Its skin was like a skinned frog, muscle fibers intertwined. Blood-red fins extended from its tailbone to the top of its head, resembling a Mohawk from the previous world. A strong sense of oppression emanated from it, the chaotic magic so thick that the school medallion vibrated uncontrollably, almost leaping out of Vesemir's armor.
"Damn it, where did this monster come from?"
Vesemir pressed his medallion with his right hand and quickly approached the Witcher apprentice in a few strides.
"Allen! Are you alright?"
Allen released the rock pillar, quickly got up, and moved his left arm. Apart from the pain from the bruised muscles, it was functional. The Witcher apprentice breathed a sigh of relief.
"Master Vesemir, I'm fine."
The Witcher master nodded, then focused on the newly appeared Drowner King. It was a creature he had never seen before. It looked like a drowner, but when did drowners grow this big?
Allen also observed the monster.
The Drowner King clutched its head with its claws, its massive body swaying. The Conjunction of the Spheres seemed to have caused it great pain. Quickly, Allen used an identification spell.
[Name: Drowner King]
[Level: ?]
[Attributes: Strength ?, Agility 13, Constitution ?, Perception 11, Mystery ?]
What the hell?
Why is the information from the identification spell missing parts?
The Witcher apprentice's face darkened. Just from the data, this Drowner King was not simple.
The drowners outside the cave had also recovered from the earthquake, rushing in groups from outside. Vesemir's expression tightened. After a moment's thought, he quickly faced the drowners, extending his left hand.
Aard sign.
A powerful telekinetic blast erupted from his palm, blowing the drowners before him away like dust. Most of the creatures hit by the attack died instantly. The silver sword was indeed a good friend against drowners, but a strong enough sign was even better.
After one Aard, the Witcher master cast Igni. Continuous flames set the pile of drowner corpses at the cave entrance ablaze, forming a barrier of fire. He had previously used only his silver sword because Allen's life wasn't in immediate danger, and Vesemir wanted to solve the problem simply, leaving some drowners for Allen.
After all, the Witcher apprentice seemed to have a strange desire to hunt drowners. But now, facing an unknown monster, he needed to quickly deal with the drowners.
"Croak——!!!"
The strong magic wave woke the Drowner King.
With a roar, its blood-red eyes, as big as fists, locked onto the two Witchers in the cave.
