Chapter 101: Chapter 101: What Is Your Wish?
"Artificial Human Roy, what is your wish?"
Gilgamesh stood towering over Roy, his serpentine golden eyes gleaming with an indescribable intensity.
"It can't possibly be something as dull as saving the world, can it? If that's the case, I'll kill you right now." He chuckled darkly before continuing, "But it's unlikely you want to destroy the world either. With those Mystic Eyes of yours, you wouldn't have waited until now to act. Honestly, I'm rather curious about your wish."
He gestured towards a figure nearby. "If you amuse me with your answer, I might not even bother using that magician over there for their final display of light and heat."
Gilgamesh was clearly interested, but it wasn't out of a desire to judge or guide Roy. No, his intent was far more self-serving. He sought entertainment—an answer that would pique his interest and satisfy his insatiable curiosity.
"To think the great King of Heroes knows me so well," Roy replied, his tone indifferent, but his eyes sharpened with vigilance.
In his limited memory, Roy was certain he had never met Gilgamesh before. Even his recent encounter with Kotomine Kirei at City Hall was their first meeting. Yet, Gilgamesh spoke as though he were intimately familiar with him—his Mystic Eyes and their abilities included.
More importantly, why would someone as proud and self-centered as the King of Heroes care about a mere "small fry" like him?
"Hahaha! I know far more about you than you think!" Gilgamesh's laughter boomed, filled with arrogance and amusement.
Roy's wariness deepened.
This was undoubtedly Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes, in all his golden splendor. Yet, something about him was off.
By Roy's understanding of Gilgamesh's character, the moment he had responded with a question instead of an answer, the arrogant king should have already unleashed the treasures of the Gate of Babylon, pinning Roy to the ground like an insect before coldly demanding his compliance.
But that didn't happen. Instead, Gilgamesh seemed almost patient, reveling in his own knowledge and enjoying the situation.
This version of Gilgamesh was unsettling, unpredictable.
Roy couldn't tell if this was a "serious Gilgamesh" or a Gilgamesh who already knew something crucial. Either way, it was far more troublesome than expected.
"Enough games. Answer my question!"
Gilgamesh's laughter faded, his blood-red serpent-like eyes narrowing dangerously.
"What is your true wish?"
Roy fell silent for a moment, realizing Gilgamesh's intentions.
The King of Heroes had spared the magician De Ryōmon for one reason: to extract Roy's answer. Once he had it, the magician's fate would be sealed.
Roy didn't feel the need to hide his wish. It wasn't something he was ashamed of.
As Gilgamesh had guessed, Roy's wish wasn't to save the world, nor was it to destroy it.
No—if he were being honest, there was a part of him that harbored a fleeting desire to destroy humanity. Not the world itself, just the species that inhabited it. However, that impulse was buried deep within him, restrained by reason.
Saving the world? That was laughable. How could he save a world he barely cared for?
If someone like Rin Tohsaka wanted to pursue such lofty ideals, he could respect her determination but would remain a dispassionate observer. If someone asked him to join her cause, he'd laugh in their face and ask, What does the world's fate have to do with me?
No, Roy's respect wasn't for the ideal of saving the world—it was for Rin Tohsaka as a person.
So, what was Roy's wish?
After a brief pause, Roy finally answered.
"In a word—Reset."
He closed his Mystic Eyes and rubbed his temples. The prolonged use of his powers had left him visibly fatigued.
"Reset?" Gilgamesh repeated, his interest visibly piqued as he nodded thoughtfully.
"You want to reset this world? Or perhaps humanity itself? Tear it all down and rebuild it, creating a superior species to replace mankind?"
Now, that was intriguing. Not because it was "right," but because it promised endless amusement.
No. That didn't feel quite right.
If Roy's wish was to reset humanity, then his rejection of Angra Mainyu would make little sense. At least on the surface, they shared a similar goal—destroying humanity. Yet Roy had decisively refused Angra Mainyu's offer without a moment's hesitation. This suggested their aims were fundamentally irreconcilable.
Jeanne d'Arc flinched at the revelation.
Reset humanity?
Was Roy's wish really that dangerous? She turned to him, seeking clarification.
"Why would I want to reset humanity?" Roy muttered to himself, his tone ambiguous. It was unclear whether he was answering Gilgamesh or simply voicing his own thoughts.
"Humans are undeniably flawed, incomplete beings. But who's to say the species created after a reset wouldn't be even worse? Even if they were superior, superiority doesn't guarantee survival. Surely you understand that, King of Heroes. Sometimes, being too perfect only leads to extinction—discarded as an evolutionary dead end. And if the new species is only marginally better than humans, then what's the point?"
"Pruning Phenomena... For a mere mage, you certainly know a lot," Gilgamesh remarked, nodding in agreement.
At this point, the King of Heroes seemed to regard Roy with genuine appreciation.
Their perspectives aligned.
Both of them had seen the flaws of humanity and chosen not to abandon it, nor to reshape it. Instead, they observed humanity's shortcomings from a distance, neither interfering nor participating, content to mock its failures with cold detachment.
Jeanne sighed in relief.
At least Roy wasn't entirely twisted.
"So, what exactly do you mean by 'reset'?"
Gilgamesh pressed on, his expression turning sharp and serpentine once more.
"It better not be something as dull as resetting time to save your own miserable past."
That would be even more tedious than saving the world.
If Roy so much as hinted at such a wish, Gilgamesh would immediately turn him into a pincushion.
"Hmm? That's an interpretation I hadn't considered."
Roy blinked, genuinely taken aback.
From his tone, it was clear that wasn't his intent.
Gilgamesh, noticing this, seemed slightly pleased.
"Impudent fool!"
Suddenly, Gilgamesh's expression darkened, and the atmosphere turned menacing.
Golden ripples spread across the sky as countless noble phantasms emerged from the Gate of Babylon—swords, spears, and axes, each a masterpiece of unparalleled mystery and craftsmanship.
Jeanne and the Demon God Commander tensed, prepared for battle.
But to their surprise, Gilgamesh's target wasn't Roy.
The golden weapons shot forth like arrows, skewering De Ryōmon's limbs and pinning him to the ground.
"Argh!"
The magician's agonized screams echoed as pain wracked his body.
And with that, the King of Heroes turned his gaze back to Roy.
