Chapter 1: Identity
There's a saying that goes that what is good for the geese is also good for the gander ; though I still don't understand what it means but I'll still find out.Growing up with my mom and my little brother was a homely experience,my mom was everything I ever imagined in a mother, she took long hours at work making sure I and Gillian are okay; sometimes I persuade her to take a day off but she would always say that the work takes her mind off things around her, though I don't totally agree with her because all work and no play makes mom a dull woman, I've not really told her this but I imagine the look on her face anyway.Raising two teens in this century has not been easy for her but Gillian and I are making it not too much of a stress,we were a very happy family enjoying each other company, looking out for each other.I never knew my father since I was born though mom said he died when I was a baby but I couldn't find any picture of him, nothing to remember him;it was as if he never existed but deep down I have a feeling that he's alive somewhere, somehow waiting for the right time to come around.Father's day in school was always my worst day in school and my class mates are not even helping matters, especially Nina whose grandfather owns the school, always feeling on top of the world, what can I say they have everything at their beck and call and my school;you don't want to know it, though it's an elite institution, all thanks to my aunt who's the wife of the current senator, because my mom will never be able to afford the tuition fee of Wilmer Academy, where dignitaries enroll their kids.Gillian and I find it difficult to fit in because they always have a way of finding out if you're among the elite or not.My first week of resumption didn't go well at all ,in fact I was suspended for two days and you wanna know why ?,so here's the thing:I finished my registration on the second day of resumption and while I was waiting for the lady who would show my to my classroom,a female student walked up to me,her mini skirt swaying as she approached me and asked" Are you looking for someone?"I looked around feeling intimidated by her beauty and eloquence,I began to stutter "I'mmm..I..I..."I was cut short like my tongue were tied in my mouth "what ever you are, you're not welcome here, and whoever did you a favor of picking you from the pit for you to have a taste of good life should think twice else they'll regret it"her words hit me with so much force that I didn't know what I was doing when I dragged her braids as she hissed and turned to leave,I punched her in the face with every strength in me,she fell flat backwards, bleeding badly from her nostrils with bruises on her once spotless face, one thing I detest the most is someone insulting me because you think you're in a better position than I,you can imagine what she just said,if you were the one she referred to ,how would handle it.Anyways people came rushing in to help her get medical attention because I guess her nose was broken and without anyone asking me any question,I was summoned to the principal's office, where I was given suspension for two days, all thanks to my aunt's influence I could've been expelled with my photo on the Punch newspaper with the caption "Random Girl Attacks Governor Peter's Daughter"hmmm.... very funny at least she'll learn to control her tongue and talk reasonably. My mom was very angry with me even after I told her what the girl said"you don't have to react like that ,what of if she died in the process, what will you do;what you could have just swallowed and ....""I will not take insult from anyone, Mom can you believe what you're saying,no wonder you go out there, working for them yet they treat you like a piece of shit, they pay you peanut, they don't care about you ..."her hand landed on the left side of my face that was when I realized I was talking to my mother "you would say no such thing to my hearing,do you know what it takes to go out there and make a living especially when you have people depending on you"tears welled in her eyes and she walked in the room slamming the door behind her.I looked around and thank goodness Gillian wasn't around, he's still at basketball practice,I just wish mom will see things the way I do,but I hope one day she will.
