Chapter 44 – “How Can I Pretend to Be Drunk Without Drinking~”:
Chu Hanting’s eyes narrowed, his expression unreadable as he rubbed his thumb and index finger together, his voice hoarse and somewhat restrained.
“Su Mu, do you know what you’re calling me?”
The youth’s slightly moist eyes were filled with tenderness, reflecting only one person’s image.
“Mmm, I know, you’re my Ah Ting,” he said softly, then leaned forward to grab Chu Hanting’s half-finished beer bottle. “I want more.”
As he was about to drink, Chu Hanting grabbed his arm and said gently, “Don’t drink anymore, you might feel sick.”
Su Mu pouted, clutching the bottle and refusing to let go, insisting: “No! I want to drink!”
How else could he pretend to be drunk?
Sober, he knew he shouldn’t be doing this.
But if he was drunk, completely intoxicated, then whatever he said or did today wouldn’t matter to tomorrow’s him.
Surely even Chu Hanting wouldn’t hold a drunk person accountable.
Finally, after several attempts to take the bottle back, Chu Hanting gave up as Su Mu held it tightly to his chest like a beloved toy.
Chu Hanting sighed and let him drink.
He watched as the youth’s lips touched where he had drunk from, tilting his head back and finishing the remaining beer in one go.
Then the young man hiccupped, stumbling two steps, unsteady on his feet.
Seeing the danger, Chu Hanting quickly wrapped his arm around his waist, pulling him into his embrace, letting him lean against him for support, afraid he might fall.
“So sleepy, can’t keep my eyes open,” the youth turned around, changing from leaning back to embracing, wrapping his arms around Chu Hanting’s neck, resting his chin on the man’s shoulder, his cheek brushing against the man’s ear before his head tilted and he fell asleep.
“Su Mu?”
“Su Mu?”
Chu Hanting called twice, shaking the person on him, but got no response.
Only steady, warm breaths against his neck indicated that after all the commotion, he had fallen into a drunken sleep.
So, moving one hand from Su Mu’s waist to under his knees, and supporting his head with the other, he lifted him in a princess carry.
Su Mu’s head still hung limply, showing no signs of waking.
Assistant Yang, waiting in the car by the roadside, saw his boss approaching carrying someone. He quickly put down his fried noodles and walked to the back door to open it for them.
That late at night, still working overtime, he had stopped by the roadside and couldn’t resist buying a bowl of fried noodles – there was no reason he should go hungry while his boss enjoyed good food.
When Chu Hanting sat in the back seat with Su Mu, he tried to place him on the seat beside him, but as soon as he moved, Su Mu began mumbling and squirming like a child about to wake up grumpy. With no choice, he had to let him sit on his lap and continue holding him.
Assistant Yang pretended not to see this scene, though his mind was racing. What was going on? This was the second time his boss had carried this university student! No, this looked like the makings of a future CEO’s spouse!
So his boss had been clueless for ten years, but once he figured it out, he was a natural! They’d only met a few times, and he’d already carried him twice. Even a helicopter wasn’t this fast! Where were the intermediate steps? As expected of the boss – skipping straight to the end!
Chu Hanting, unaware his assistant was admiring his speed in pursuing someone, just held Su Mu tightly to prevent him from falling during sudden brakes.
What he didn’t see was that the “sleeping” person’s lips briefly curved into a slight smile before quickly disappearing.
Su Mu was pretending at first, but perhaps the man’s embrace and chest felt so secure that he actually fell asleep without realizing it.
It wasn’t until he opened his eyes the next morning that he found himself in Chu Hanting’s room again. Last time it was because of his fever, this time because he was drunk. Both times he’d been brought here and allowed to sleep in his room.
Didn’t this mean that Chu Hanting didn’t actually reject him?
Su Mu grabbed the corner of the blanket to cover half his face, happily nuzzling against it.
This time, new clothes were already laid out at his bedside – not yesterday’s outfit, nor Chu Hanting’s suit and shirt. Instead, there was a clean white hoodie and beige casual pants.
These must have been prepared specially for him.
Wait!!!
Su Mu looked at himself again – he was in pajamas again. So who exactly had changed his clothes these two times?!!!
When his eyes caught the alarm clock on the bedside table – oh no.
Su Mu quickly got up, efficiently freshened up and went downstairs.
Warm breakfast was still on the dining table, but no sign of Chu Hanting.
As he hurriedly walked towards the exit, Auntie Wang, who had just finished cleaning the kitchen, saw him and quickly called out.
“Young Master Su, breakfast – you haven’t had your breakfast yet.”
“Auntie Wang, I have something urgent. If Chu Hanting comes down, please let him know. I need to go.”
“Ah, the young master has already gone to work! He asked me to make sure you eat breakfast properly.”
Gone? Of course – look how late it was, the sun was already high in the sky.
“Then Auntie Wang, could you pack everything up? I’ll take it with me.”
Seeing Su Mu was indeed in a hurry, Auntie Wang quickly agreed: “Alright, alright, wait a moment, I’ll get plastic containers to pack it.”
“That’s enough, Auntie Wang, really enough, I can’t eat this much alone.”
Unable to refuse, and with Auntie Wang not listening to his protests, Su Mu finally left the Chu house carrying several packed boxes.
He was in such a hurry because today his father was starting his first round of treatment, beginning medication.
Carrying a bag of food, he rushed to his father’s hospital room.
“Isn’t that Su Mu?” Liu Yu, who had just finished his morning consultations, was leaving his office for lunch break when he saw a familiar figure running through the hospital.
After thinking for a moment, he asked a nurse to check why Su Mu was at the hospital.
In the hospital room.
Su Nuokang maintained a good attitude, not seeming self-pitying despite his cancer diagnosis. Being in early stages, his spirit was still quite good.
Seeing Su Mu arrive, Su Nuokang asked about the moving situation, since what should have been a two-person task had become Su Mu’s sole responsibility due to his hospitalization for the tumor. He couldn’t help worrying about his son facing difficulties or being overwhelmed alone.
However, Su Mu appeared relaxed, “Dad, don’t worry. Just focus on cooperating with the treatment and beating this illness – that would be the greatest comfort to me. Everything else is manageable.”
“I’m grown up now, I can take care of myself.”
“Rather, Dad, if you need anything in the hospital, just call me. I promise I’ll come right away.”
Su Nuokang felt deeply gratified to have such an excellent and filial son. Compared to that ungrateful Su Ning, Su Mu was truly his son.
This wasn’t just parental bias or because Su Mu was his biological son. The fact was, he had raised Su Ning for twenty-two years. Though he couldn’t provide luxury, he never let him suffer any hardship, never made him do housework, and bought him whatever he wanted.
He never let him want for anything.
When Su Ning struggled with studies, he hired tutors.
Regarding hobbies, he supported them all, though Su Ning failed at everything he tried.
But after learning about his background, Su Ning left without looking back with the Su family.
That wasn’t the problem, but the words he said before leaving truly broke his heart.
