Chapter 122
“Good morning, Master Allen.”
My plan for this morning was to stroll around the capital with KAEDE and have lunch at the Rose Hotel. However, since I was targeted by an assassin, I had to advance the plan and temporarily take shelter, teleporting to an empty room where the Moon Gate’s coordinates were registered. Upon arrival, a woman in servant attire was standing quietly in the corner. When she saw me, she rose from her chair and greeted me with a deep bow.
“There was a bit of an emergency… Could you call Yuzu-san or Eri-san?”
“Understood. Please wait a moment.”
The woman lightly touched her neck with her fingertips and began communicating through her access gear. Her mouth moved silently, though no voice came out.
Watching this odd scene with curiosity, I waited as she communicated. After a few minutes, she turned to me and said, “Lady Eri will be here shortly.” She rang a small bell on the table beside her, and more women in similar servant attire started filing into the room where the Moon Gate was located.
“Shall I take your belongings? And this item here?”
“Oh, this is just my wallet, so you can just set it aside…”
As I fumbled through the crowd of attendants who had gathered around, I found myself being undressed and wiped down by the women. Meanwhile, KAEDE, who had exuded a sharp, intimidating aura just moments ago, returned to her usual calm demeanor once we stepped through the Moon Gate into the future world. She simply stared off into space, paying no mind to the bustle around me.
“Something urgent has come up, I understand. What happened?”
“Well, actually…”
Despite the sudden change of plans that brought us here several hours earlier, Eri arrived at the room within five minutes. She must have hurried; her normally fluffy hair was slightly messy, showing she hadn’t had time to fully prepare.
(She probably hasn’t slept at all…)
When I was about to return to Asphial, I asked her what she would do next, and both Yuzu and Eri said they still had work to finish. Judging by her slightly weary expression, it seemed she was indeed sleep-deprived.
Feeling a bit guilty for inconveniencing them, I explained the situation from earlier.
“So, an assassin…?”
“Yes, even though I’m relatively new to that world, I’ve been involved in a few ventures, and I think I may have made some enemies along the way.”
Through KAEDE’s VRST, we were able to read the memory of the assassin who attacked me. All we knew for sure was that the client was a merchant. However, the mastermind’s identity remained unclear, as the request had been passed through multiple intermediaries.
“And about that poison?”
“Analysis results are already available. Shall I share the information?”
“Sure, go ahead.”
When KAEDE asked for my permission to disclose the assassin’s profile, scene details, and the poison analysis data, I agreed. Since KAEDE generally cannot exchange information with others without my explicit consent unless in an emergency, these extra steps of approval create some odd conversations.
Eri, understanding the protocol, showed no particular reaction. She quickly reviewed the data KAEDE sent and, after getting my approval, asked if she could pass it along to the military for further investigation, bringing the discussion to a close.
“With the Silver Killer Wasps—Jill Killer Hornets—released, I expect this matter should be resolved by tomorrow. However, for thoroughness, I would like to request a follow-up to confirm the results.”
Apparently, the silver bees KAEDE released throughout the capital were highly effective weaponry, even used by the Imperial Army for special operations.
These tiny machines, just 50 millimeters in size, each possessed powerful information-gathering abilities, allowing them to scout and survey areas within a radius of several kilometers. They could move stealthily thanks to their small size, and their poisonous stingers, like a wasp’s, could disable or kill targets.
With a thousand of these wasps, they could comb a city of tens of thousands within half a day, allowing them to locate suspects based on KAEDE’s memory data and eliminate any accomplices…or so Eri explained.
But to be safe, she requested that I let them continue monitoring until tomorrow to confirm the outcome.
