AM I SUPERMAN?

Chapter 17: CHAPTER 17

The North Pole. The emergency rescue satellites of the United States Aviation Agency detected an anomaly beneath the Arctic glaciers.

Initially, scientists speculated it might be a Soviet-era submarine, but further research revealed the object had been buried for more than 20,000 years.

A helicopter descended slowly onto the glacier. A woman stepped out, bundled in thick, insulated gear. Despite her bulky attire, her poise and grace were unmistakable—she resembled a snow lotus blooming proudly amidst the icy expanse.

As she disembarked, a man waiting nearby approached and greeted her. "Ms. Lois Lane, welcome. I'm John, the on-site manager for Arctic Cargo. I'll take you to the station."

Lois adjusted her snow goggles and smiled. "Thank you."

"I'll carry your luggage. Please, follow me," John offered. As they began walking, he added with a grin, "Ms. Lane, I may not be a regular reader of The Daily Planet, but I was really impressed by your exposé on the First Division. You're an amazing journalist!"

"I'm just doing my job, Mr. John," Lois replied modestly.

After a walk of several hundred meters, they reached a massive glacier. At its base was a temporary research station, now partially under military control.

"Is this where they found it?" Lois asked, her curiosity piqued.

"Yes. The scientists detected a 300-meter-long metal object beneath the ice using sonar. Can you imagine? Three hundred meters! That's longer than any nuclear submarine—it's the size of an aircraft carrier!"

"An aircraft carrier? Twenty thousand years ago? Humans were barely using stones as weapons back then," Lois remarked, raising a skeptical eyebrow.

"I'm not kidding," John replied. "But before we discuss this further, let's get you settled. I'll take you to the dormitory. But please, Ms. Lane, stay inside at night. Temperatures drop to minus forty degrees. If you step outside, you might not make it back until spring thaw."

After a brief exchange, John escorted Lois to a crowded warehouse that would serve as her quarters. Restless and eager to uncover the truth, Lois found it impossible to simply wait until morning.

Her curiosity won out. Braving the frigid Arctic night, Lois ventured outside.

The night sky was brilliantly illuminated, and workers were busy setting up a construction site on the glacier. A massive rig was in place, ready to cut through the ice and uncover what lay beneath. Tower crane lights swept across the frozen landscape as Lois raised her camera, framed the scene, and pressed the shutter.

Click!

Her camera captured the breathtaking Arctic night. As she admired the shot, something caught her attention—a figure on the glacier's cliff.

"Wait, is that... a person?" Lois squinted, thinking her eyes were deceiving her. She zoomed in on the image.

Her breath hitched. "It's a man! And he's wearing short sleeves? How is that even possible?"

The temperature was well below freezing—hovering around -20 degrees—and Lois couldn't fathom how anyone could survive, let alone move, dressed like that.

"I have to get a closer look!"

Driven by journalistic determination, Lois ignored John's warnings. She couldn't let such a discovery slip away.

Meanwhile...

Clark had followed the spaceship key all the way to the North Pole. The signal led him to a massive structure buried beneath the glacier. The strange sound in his mind emanated from within.

To avoid attracting attention from the nearby researchers, Clark worked in secret. Each night, he used his heat vision to carve a tunnel from the far side of the glacier, inching closer to the mysterious object.

After days of effort, he finally broke through.

"A giant... spaceship?"

Clark stared in awe at the massive vessel, its ancient design a stark contrast to anything on Earth.

The interior of the cave suddenly lit up, revealing an immense, cathedral-like expanse. It resembled a giant stalactite cavern, but everything was encased in ice that had frozen solid for thousands of years.

At the center of the frozen cave was a massive, strangely shaped spacecraft. Its design bore a striking resemblance to the pod Clark had arrived in when he first landed on Earth.

The key in Clark's hand trembled again, reacting to the spacecraft's presence. Excited, he sprinted toward the ship's entrance in a few strides and stepped inside.

The moment he entered, Clark's eyes were drawn to a console at the center of the ship. In the middle of the console was a slot, perfectly shaped to match the key he held.

"Found an intruder!"

A sudden voice echoed through the spacecraft, followed by the emergence of a steel silkworm-like robot. The hovering machine approached Clark swiftly, extending a whip-like metal tentacle that lashed out at his chest.

Snap!

The metal tentacle struck Clark with surprising force, causing him a flicker of pain. Narrowing his eyes, Clark retaliated with a single punch, smashing the silkworm robot into pieces.

With the obstacle dealt with, Clark inserted the key into the console.

"The ship is restarting..."

As the key, bearing the crest of the House of El, slid into place, the spacecraft began to hum with life. Lights flickered on, and the interior, previously frozen and desolate, was revealed in pristine condition.

"Citizen ID confirmed: Kal-El... Warning: intruder detected outside the spacecraft. Neutralizing."

The damaged silkworm robot, now reactivated, abruptly turned away from Clark. Extending two tentacles, it darted toward the entrance of the cave.

Clark watched in confusion before realization struck. He squinted at the entrance and saw a figure. "It's a woman! Hey, she's not an intruder!"

Recognizing the robot's aggression, Clark panicked. He had felt the force of the robot's tentacles and knew it could easily harm, or even kill, a human. Without hesitation, he dashed after it.

Meanwhile...

Lois Lane, after following Clark's faint footprints into the icy cavern, finally stumbled upon the spacecraft. Stunned by her discovery, she stood in awe of the alien craft before her.

But her amazement was short-lived. A silkworm robot suddenly emerged from the spacecraft, tentacles writhing menacingly.

"What the... what is this?" Lois muttered, instinctively taking a step back.

Before she could react further, one of the tentacles lashed out and struck her abdomen.

"Ahhh!" Lois screamed in pain, doubling over as blood seeped from the wound.

Clark arrived just in time to see the robot attacking Lois. With a roar, he lunged forward, grabbing the silkworm robot with both hands. He wrenched it apart effortlessly, the metal snapping and crunching as though it were paper.

Tossing the destroyed machine aside, Clark knelt by Lois.

"Are you okay? You're going to be fine!" he said urgently, trying to reassure her.

Lois, despite her pain, couldn't help but be struck by the sight of her savior—a man with piercing eyes, a comforting smile, and an almost otherworldly presence.

"Who... who are you? Why are you here? And what is this place?" Lois stammered, struggling to process the situation.

Clark didn't answer her questions immediately. His expression grew serious as he scanned her injury with his X-ray vision.

"You have internal bleeding," he said, his voice firm but gentle. "If I don't stop it now, you won't survive the hour."
