chapter 9
9 – Guests of Hero Country
Chirp. Chirp. Chirp chirp.
The birds’ chirping tickled my ears.
“Snooor…”
And the soft sound of someone deeply asleep.
I woke up from the sound that I couldn’t hear in my room until yesterday.
A petite and soft figure of a woman came into view directly.
Luna was still turned away from me.
She was sleeping with her arms tightly crossed.
“I could have uncrossed your arms….”
It must be a habit.
Living alone all this time, I unconsciously developed this habit to avoid destroying something.
I lightly touched Luna’s shoulder and whispered to her.
“I’ll stay by your side as promised, Luna.”
“Uh… hehehe.”
Did she hear me in her sleep?
Luna mumbled and blushed.
“Ugh, what time is it now?”
Stretching, she picked up her phone that was by her head.
She’s so tired, yet she managed to wake up before the alarm rang.
I’m quite impressed──.
“Huh.”
The phone screen wouldn’t light up.
No matter how many times I touched it, the screen remained black without any color coming in.
“………….”
Imagining the worst-case scenario, I looked down at the charging cable strewn across the floor.
*Bwoong!*
A single vibration echoed, and the manufacturer’s logo appeared.
It was the startup screen you see when charging a dead phone.
“hahahaha. Can’t believe it.”
Soon, the screen lit up.
And the current time revealed itself…
“Eight o’clock… thirty…!?”
I caught only three out of the four digits, reflexively jumped up from my seat.
As if being led by something, I dashed straight into the bathroom.
“Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn…!”
Washing, wiping, and even cutting my hair—just three minutes!
Exiting the bathroom with a bang on the door after three minutes, scratching my belly, I casually met Ruina coming out of her room.
“Ugh… Good morning, did you sleep well…?”
“Did you sleep well!? Sorry, but I’m a bit busy right now!”
“Hmm…?”
Ruina tilted her head, clearly not understanding what I was up to.
Come to think of it, I hadn’t told her my original profession.
Given my hurry from the morning breeze, it was no wonder she was puzzled.
“Ruina! I’m really sorry, but I have to go out! You’ll be fine alone at home, right!?”
Throughout my life, I’ve never changed into clothes as quickly as I did just now. I grabbed the shoulders of Lina, who stood with a blank expression, and shouted.
“I’m used to being alone, but…”
“Alright! Let’s go!”
It was the moment when I was about to leave her behind and dash to the entrance.
Thunk!! A strong grip caught my forearm.
“Wait!”
“Uh, um?”
Did I accidentally touch Lina’s feelings!?
Amidst the embarrassment due to my lateness.
I gathered my eyebrows and came face to face with Lina, who was smiling mischievously, her lips slightly puckered.
“I don’t really know what’s going on, but…”
Lina stood in front of me and raised her toes as if tiptoeing.
And then,
Peck.
She left a light kiss on my cheek.
“hehehe ♡”
She tilted her body, smiling slyly.
I gently touched the cheek that received the morning kiss and stared blankly at her lovely figure for a moment.
“I, I’ll be back…”
“Yeah!”
On the bleak and busy morning commute, my girlfriend’s sincere encouragement was truly a source of strength.
* * *
“The support was really nice, but…”
Gripping onto the handle tightly,
Inside the moving electric train, there was a chronic latecomer.
In order to buy some time, I quickly ran back to the station, fueled by Luina’s support buff.
But as expected, I couldn’t shorten the physical distance.
For some reason, it felt like the train was intentionally running slowly today…
“Sigh…”
I was already late anyway.
Should I have asked Luina to lift me up?
“No, that wouldn’t be right.”
I immediately shook my head, dismissing the careless thought that had crossed my mind.
No matter how urgent it was, that was out of the question.
I didn’t want to rely on Luina’s power in places where there were many onlookers.
Especially in densely populated metropolitan areas, where there were plenty of heroes.
If by any chance I got caught by a patrolling hero at an unfortunate moment…
Things would undoubtedly become complicated in various ways.
“But then again, I can’t ask Team Leader Lee Tae-seok for help…”
That’s also a rejection.
I wouldn’t expect them to know anything about my situation related to Loina.
Those rough and tough gentlemen would never bother to care about my personal matters.
“Sigh…”
Another long sigh escaped from me.
Thanks to that, the middle-aged lady sitting in front of me started to look at me as if I were a strange person.
Unknowingly, I kept muttering to myself, and it seemed like a form of poetic justice.
[Dear passengers, we apologize for the inconvenience. Our train is currently traveling at a reduced speed due to trouble on the high-speed rail line.]
Huh? What did they just say?
A voice with a hint of noise came from above.
I looked up at the ceiling, my facial muscles twitching.
Was it not just my imagination that the train seemed unusually slow today?
“Sigh…”
I couldn’t even check the time without a phone charger.
How much longer would I be trapped in this subway in this situation of uncertainty?
A deeper and thicker sigh escaped from me, like the flame breath of the dragon hero, ‘Draco-nius’.
Meanwhile, the train was gradually slowing down.
At this rate, people could run faster than the train.
Other passengers, who were starting to feel something was off, were looking around or out the window.
Each of them showing signs of agitation.
“Oh my, oh my…”
At that moment, an ajumma stared at me as if I were a strange person and let out a sigh of admiration.
In her hand, a smartphone was held horizontally.
On the screen, a high-speed train that felt quite familiar was visible.
“Excuse me, could you possibly know what’s going on there?”
I ignored the strange treatment and spoke.
“It seems like a villain appeared. Over there, a bit away from the station.”
“A villain?”
Shortly after, the ajumma turned the screen toward me.
A real-time news video with “LIVE” written in the upper right corner.
In the middle of the high-speed rail, a clash was unfolding between a figure surrounded by electric currents and heroes in shabby costumes.
“Electrica…!”
The nationwide villain list updated daily by the Hero Association.
The appearance of an A-class villain, consistently on that list, was on the screen.
[Electrica! Today is the day I apprehend you!]
“Just surrender quietly, okay!?”
“hehehe. Heroes whose names I don’t even know are trying to catch someone?”
Zap!
A villain with the ability to absorb and release electricity.
Fierce currents surged in all directions around Electrica.
In terms of abilities alone, he could easily be classified as S-class.
Up until now, he had been considered a low-level villain, only committing minor electricity-related crimes.
“Ughhh…”
But now, in my current situation, that damn nuisance who was interrupting my commute was a more sinister villain than any S-class villain.
“Oh~ Today, I’ve had a satisfying feast of electricity. Thank you very much, everyone.”
Electrika deliberately showed off to the citizens, offering a polite aristocratic greeting towards the cameras capturing her.
Soon, a blue electric ring began to flicker around her feet.
She was attempting to escape using her unique electric abilities.
The way she fled was rather simple.
Using the rebound effect of the electrodes, she would spring up like a spring.
The speed was slightly exaggerated, to the point of being compared to a railgun.
It was enough to rival the body-enhanced heroes who specialized in speed.
It was a good thing she was just a quirky villain who happened to love electricity.
If she had used her abilities to commit large-scale crimes or terrorism, she might have become an S-class villain.
“Am I going to miss her again in the end…”
An agency like the Department of Hero Affairs, similar to the Hero Association.
It seemed that the discussion that had been happening quite frequently in the National Hero Council was about to happen again.
Even if she wasn’t causing major crimes, the discussion was about whether heroes could afford to be futile in front of the public.
But the heroes currently trying to apprehend Electrika were unable to catch up to her.
They were, in essence, practically unknown, exceedingly ordinary heroes.
[Soldiers, let’s go!]
It was the moment when sparks of blue fire crackled on the ground where Electrika stood.
A crimson flash from the sky aimed at the villain.
[Gotcha!!]
Kwaaang───!!!!
Immediately, a tremendous roar and explosion erupted.
The firepower of high caliber.
Undoubtedly the ability of some well-known hero, known to everyone.
“Blaze!!”
“It’s Blaze!!”
“Electrika, kid! You’ve encountered a real opponent this time, huh!?”
Soon, cheers from passengers who had been watching the same news on the monorail erupted.
[Hero Blaze! Just successfully apprehended the A-class villain Electrika!]
After a while, the explosion subsided.
Along with the confident voice of a woman.
The sight of the villain, firmly restrained in the hands of the hero in the red costume, started to become visible.
She’s none other than the currently trending hero academy graduate elite.
Explosive hero, Blaze of the Inferno.
“You’re still the same… Haneun Han.”
In terms of instant firepower, she is unparalleled, and she was a girl who was my classmate in the past at the Academy.
