An Unwelcome Hero - shadow slave

Chapter 24: The slaughter of Assai

Chiron took out two weapon memories for himself, a short sword he held in his left hand and a pike he held in his right one and they Instantly lit ablaze! The weapons were for very specific situations, the spear for killing from a distance and the sword for killing those close. There was no middle range, as with his speed, there were enemies he allowed to be close and those better killed from a distance to maintain efficiency.

Fire burned both weapons, as he ran into the city. None could stop him due to his speed, but he didn't have the power to fight soldiers. Though that's wasn't the priority, as he sat random dormant memories aflame in a blazing glory and firebombed house after house.

*A handkerchief for you! A cute badge for you! A spoon for you! Ooooh! How lucky, this building will be destroyed by a cute little piece of paper!*

The rampage continued, as he ran around the city. With one second being the equivalent of 10, a soldier died faster than anyone could even see them die. Chiron stormed the garrison buildings, as he wanted soldier and combat oriented memories and Echoes , so he would obviously kill them himself and firebomb the civilian locations.

He approached the first tower after firebombing several compact buildings and found his first soldier group. They tried to resist, but how could they? Chiron's small body no longer held the necessary muscle mass to do damage through force, but why would that matter? With his blazing glory and weapon memories he could rampage and destroy as much as he pleased and kill all he saw!

His loyal Echoes were no slouches either. They went into town and began a massacre of their own. Chiron didn't know if his Echoes kills would have a less likely chance of giving him memories, so he instructed them to focus on civilians and Sean made sure none survived.

He gathered his men in a formation and transmitted his intent through gestures. They approached a civilian market and the first person to die was an older peddler, who sat at the edge of the market.

For a moment, the civilians couldn't understand what was happening, but 20 dormant warriors weren't going to just let them off with these seconds of hesitation.

Sean looked at the 6 least armoured Echoes and did a clockwise hand motion. They nodded and 3 ran left, while 3 went right. He looked at the 7 men to his right and spread his hand towards the civilians and they followed his orders right away, dispersing to quickly enter the group, while the remaining 5 held their spears and followed behind Sean, as he thrust his spear forward and charged!

Civilians died by the hundreds each minute. Sean and his six spearmen entered a V formation and ran through the roads with all of their might. All in their sight were skewered, as they ran forward. They were the primary crowd mowing method, while the 7 spread around to kill off any stragglers and the 6 ran around to cause chaos and redirect the crowd towards the meat grinder. Soldiers died by the dozen to Chiron, while civilian death entered the hundreds!

Within five minutes of Chiron entering through the west gate, the entire western district of Assai was burning, while thousands of civilians had died.

Sean looked at his spear and the humans he was killing. He gaze seemed to be... Sad? But whatever he was thinking didn't seem to have much effect. He never stopped killing, as that was the order he was given.

The crowds had been cleared too much, so he could no longer drive the human lawnmower and made a dispersion gesture to let his spearmen leave and join the individual combats. They all nodded and ran in different directions.

The Echo looked around for humans. "AAH!" The scream attracted his attention, as he saw a little girl being carried by her father. The larger man ran towards an alley, but he tripped and fell down. Luckily, he rotated his body and used it to cushion his daughter's fall.

Sean walked towards them with his spear held in a tight grip. His body seemed to subconsciously break the orders given, as he didn't rush to get kills. He stood in front of the man and held his spear, directed at the little girl in the man's embrace. His intention was clear, her heart and the man's head.

"N-no, please! Don't do this!" Sean closed his eyes and thrust his spear forward. His talent with spears shone through, as even without sight, his aim struck true! The spear headed toward the little girl's back and...

Splat

BOOM

Sean's eyes blasted open, as he felt intense pain in his abdomen and looked forward. His body shot backwards, as the dormant memories he wore barely protected him from dying. If he was a normal man, the internal bleeding would have done the assailant's job within moments.

He did a smooth recovery roll and stood up, his spear held over his left wrist, while the left hand held a round shield. The Echo looked forward and saw a giant of a man. He wore armour, that made his towering frame appear even larger. His left hand was quite visibly injured, as drops of blood fell through the dent in his iron gauntlet the spear left.

The gigantic man had sacrificed his hand to protect the innocent and he stared down Sean. "I do not know who you are or why your band of awakened have targeted us, but you have made a deadly mistake! On my honour as Aranai's one true guardian and in the name of her highness, I will end you all!"

Elbaf had appeared! And a large team of 400 soldiers closed in on the market square and were ready to encircle and kill the Echoes!
