Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Parasyte Kabane
Turning the corner of the second-floor hallway, Lin Moze peered through a window and spotted three figures cautiously making their way below.
All three were male students wearing the school uniform.
The tallest one, leading the group, held an axe and had books taped around his forearms and shins—makeshift armor against Kabane bites.
The other two followed closely behind—one wielding a baseball bat, the other gripping a kitchen knife.
As they crept forward, Lin Moze overheard their hushed conversation.
The boy in the middle whispered nervously:
"Hey, Zejiri, maybe we should just go back to the classroom. It's too dangerous out here. I don't want to end up like Kenichi—with half my head chopped off by one of those things."
"Shut up!" snapped Zejiri, the leader.
"You think I don't know it's dangerous out here? But it's even worse inside the school!"
The boy in the back added:
"Yeah, remember the noises in the hallways earlier? Something was killing those monsters—like, all of them."
The middle boy hesitated.
"But… what if it was rescue workers?"
"Rescue workers, my ass!" Zejiri barked, trying to keep his voice down.
"If it were rescue workers, why would they kill all the monsters, clean up the corpses, and leave without saying a word?"
The last boy nodded.
"Exactly! It's probably something even worse than those monsters. Maybe it just hasn't noticed us yet. If it ever does, we're screwed."
"But…"
Before the middle boy could finish, an unfamiliar voice interrupted:
"I think he's got a point. A little paranoia isn't a bad thing—it might even save your lives someday."
"AHHH!"
The sudden voice startled all three boys.
The nervous one nearly screamed, but the other two clamped his mouth shut just in time.
"My bad, my bad."
Lin Moze appeared out of nowhere, casually leaning against the railing above them.
"I should've made some noise before coming down."
He smirked.
Then, in a direct tone, he asked:
"I heard you mention someone named Kenichi. What happened to him?"
Kenichi.
The name sounded familiar.
Lin Moze remembered his classmate, Minami Kenichi—not exactly a close friend, but someone he talked to occasionally.
That's why Lin Moze had warned him earlier when the chaos started.
But the three boys were too shaken to answer.
Instead, they nervously asked:
"H-how did you even get here? We didn't see anyone around!"
"I don't like people answering questions with questions."
Lin Moze's tone hardened.
"So let's try this again. What happened to Kenichi?"
This time, Zejiri stepped forward.
"There were four of us. We hid in the home economics room when everything started. Once the monsters calmed down, we decided to leave the school."
He paused.
"We tried going out through the main entrance, but there was this terrifying monster. Kenichi was walking ahead of us and… it chopped his head in half. We got scared and ran back here."
Lin Moze fell silent for a moment.
He didn't feel sad, but a heavy weight settled over him.
His earlier warning had saved Kenichi from the initial wave, only for him to die later anyway.
Still, in a world like this, a quick death was almost merciful.
Breaking the silence, Zejiri cautiously asked:
"Um… who are you, exactly?"
"Just think of me as a superpowered survivor."
Lin Moze didn't even blink as he continued:
"I killed all the Kabane in this school. Now, describe that monster you saw, and I'll help you escape."
The boys exchanged nervous glances.
If Lin Moze had said this before the apocalypse, they would've thought he was crazy.
But after everything they'd seen—and his sudden appearance—they weren't so sure anymore.
Finally, Zejiri proposed:
"How about we team up? We'll be safer if we stick together."
"I'm not interested in being your babysitter."
Lin Moze checked his phone for the time.
"You've got two minutes. Tell me everything you know about that monster—or I'll kill all three of you."
His calm tone sent chills down their spines.
The boy holding the kitchen knife quickly spoke up:
"I saw it! I was in the back, so I had time to look."
He swallowed nervously.
"It looked similar to the other monsters—except its left arm was different."
"How different?"
"It was like a whip. A muscle whip with barbs and blades. I didn't get a good look, but I'm pretty sure that's what killed Kenichi."
Lin Moze's expression darkened.
A whip-like arm made of muscle—with blades and barbs?
This didn't sound like a Kabane mutation.
Instead, it reminded him of another creature from a different anime—
A Parasyte.
