Chinatown.
"With me here, you're safe. Don't be afraid."
Lin Aida didn't know why, but hearing those words, her heart eased as if all her worries melted away.
In the past, every time she "sleepwalked" into an unfamiliar place, she was always filled with fear and uncertainty. But now, with this man beside her, his presence and reassuring tone dispelled the fear.
It felt as though as long as he was there, nothing could harm her.
Yes, John might just be a plumber, but he knew so much about the world. With him around, surely there was nothing to worry about, right?
As her thoughts wandered, Lin Aida noticed the cacophony of noise fading into the background. She also realized that John's warm, strong hand was supporting her waist, pressing her lightly against his firm chest.
The steady rhythm of his heartbeat, powerful and resonant like a drum, filled her ears, making her face flush crimson.
After some time, she asked softly, "Mr. John, can we start walking now?"
"Not yet."
A few more minutes passed. Lin Aida felt John release his hold.
"Alright," he said, his voice calm. "Put your hand on my shoulder. Let's move."
For some reason, a pang of disappointment crept into Lin Aida's heart. An unexpected thought flashed in her mind.
It wouldn't be so bad if I could stay in his arms all night...
Wait, what? No! Lin Aida, what's wrong with you?!
Her face turned as red as a ripe tomato, as if steam were rising from the top of her head.
Unaware of her internal turmoil, Homelander scanned their surroundings. After splitting the oncoming truck in half with his heat vision, he had realized they were standing in the middle of a bustling street.
Skyscrapers lined the sidewalks, illuminated by neon signs and vibrant displays. It was a sprawling, modern metropolis, much like New York City.
But something felt off.
Among the throngs of pedestrians, some began pulling out their phones to take photos and videos. Homelander swiftly lifted Lin Aida in his arms, shrouded her with his Biological Force Field, and flew into the air at a speed imperceptible to the human eye.
High above the city, his suspicions grew. The skyline resembled New York's, but certain landmarks stood out.
One, in particular, confirmed his theory: a giant statue of Superman in the center of a plaza.
DC Universe.
That's where they had landed.
Recalling Lin Aida's previous sleepwalking incident, Homelander deduced they had arrived during a critical time. Last time, it was when Kryptonian generals visited Earth. But this time? He wasn't sure yet.
With no immediate way to determine their position in the timeline, Homelander decided to find somewhere quiet. He carried Lin Aida away from the city to a small, tranquil town.
---
The town was peaceful, far from the city's chaos. They checked into a modest inn, greeted by a middle-aged woman smoking a cigarette at the front desk.
"Welcome," she said, rising with a smile. "Are you two here to stay? Single room or double?"
Before Homelander could respond, she added, "I recommend the couple's room—it's perfect for a romantic getaway."
Homelander chuckled. "Two single rooms, please."
Though visibly disappointed, the woman nodded. "No problem. I'll just need your IDs."
As she prattled on about room rates, Homelander's attention drifted to the TV in the corner of the lobby.
"Where is Superman?" the news anchor announced dramatically.
"That remains unknown. Following the explosion at the congressional hearing, he vanished without a trace."
"Has he abandoned us? Only God knows."
The innkeeper sighed, noticing Homelander's gaze. "I don't think Superman's a bad guy. What about you, sir?"
Homelander smiled faintly, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. He handed her his credit card.
Moments later, the woman frowned. "I'm sorry, sir, but this card isn't valid."
Homelander's smile froze.
Great. He never carried cash, relying solely on his credit card. But clearly, currency from The Boys' universe wasn't compatible here.
"I have cash," Lin Aida interjected, pulling crisp bills from her pocket.
Handing them over, she whispered, "It's alright, Mr. John. This happens every time I 'sleepwalk.' Cash is always the safest bet—it works everywhere."
---
Meanwhile, in the Pentagon.
A general clasped his hands behind his back, staring intently at the footage playing on the massive screen in front of him.
The grainy recording showed a man wearing a baseball cap and plaid shirt—clearly attempting to blend in. But what happened next shattered any illusions of normalcy.
Two golden beams shot from the man's eyes, slicing a truck clean in half. Moments later, he lifted a young Asian woman into his arms and calmly ascended into the night sky.
The general rewound the footage, pausing on the exact moment the beams of heat vision were unleashed.
"Is this Superman?" he asked, his voice sharp.
A technician in the back quickly typed into his console, shaking his head. "No, sir. I ran a facial recognition scan. This individual doesn't match Superman's profile."
The general scowled. "Then who the hell is he? Another Kryptonian?"
"Just how many of these caped freaks are flying around above our heads?"
A bespectacled woman adjusted her glasses and offered cautiously, "All the Kryptonians are supposed to be dead, sir. Even Zod is nothing but a corpse now, his body under LexCorp's custody."
"It's definitely not Zod," she added.
The general grimaced. "Can we track them?"
A suited officer raised his hand. "They're in a small town east of the city, sir."
"Mobilize the nearest units. Block all roads in and out of the town. Once we've deployed, we'll move in," the general ordered.
The bespectacled woman hesitated. "Sir, if he's a Kryptonian, our known methods won't harm him."
The general's face darkened. "That may be true, but we can't let these aliens think they can run rampant."
"Remember, he just sliced a truck in half on a public street."
"We don't have the luxury of doing nothing. Some battles have to be fought, even if they're hopeless."
---
Far away, atop a snowy mountain.
A lone figure crouched by a fire, its flickering flames casting shadows on his face.
He stared at a stone cairn in the distance, his breath visible in the frigid air.
"Father," he murmured, his voice low and somber.
"Nightmares never end. They never will."
