Chapter 24 – Research

Vincent watched Klaye’s face and thought about a lot of things. He hesitated to tell him more about their research. Knowing his personality, Vincent was sure, he would help them gladly. Before he was afraid to tell him because he believed that Klaye was reborn too. He didn’t know how deep the wound on his heart was. He didn’t want to force him to go through another experiment or go into the institution. But it was just his thoughts. He didn’t want to lie to him, and he was afraid if Klaye’s had other thoughts and if he found out about it later he would be angry at him.

Vincent closed his eyes and took a deep breath. In the end, it was Klaye’s life, he had the right to choose. „You... Do you really want to help them?”

„What do you mean?”

„... Under the hospital, there’s a research institution. When special ability users appear, I send them to the hospital to give blood samples. If it’s useful, then every month they need to go again.”

Klaye’s eyes widened. He was sure there would be some researches, but he didn’t think Vincent would tell him so easily.

Vincent was anxious and grabbed his hand. „If you don’t want, you don’t need to go!... But if you want, but you are afraid, then we can go together. I’m going there every month too. They’ll just take a little blood! There won’t be anything else!”

Klaye sighed. He knew, without sacrifice, they couldn’t reach anything. It happened a lot of times in the past. Sometimes it was just one life, sometimes thousands... Without them, humanity couldn’t reach where they were now. Even if their sacrifices were acknowledged and they got a memorial, it didn’t mean they wanted to end their life that way...

Vincent suddenly hugged him. „I’m sorry! I can’t promise you I can hide your ability forever! Accidents can always happen! But I will do my best to win enough time for the doctors to develop the best medicine! That way even if your ability becomes well known, it won’t be that precious. I won’t let anyone go after your life!”

Klaye hugged him back. He pressed his face against Vincent’s neck and nodded. He knew that it was the best promise he could get.

Within a year, some big families would develop a special machine what could see other’s ability. In the beginning, they only used them at the entrance of their camps. Its news spread fast and other cities and bigger receptacles bought it. Later, the kings sent out teams to visit other places and test the ability users. They believed that the best could only serve them.

Even if they built up a strong city, they couldn’t fight against the zombies and humans at the same time. Not to mention humanity was greedy. Once someone promised enough benefits, even Vincent’s closest friends could turn against them.

Klaye didn’t want to see that. He didn’t want to be a burden. He wanted to help Vincent. If the doctors could develop different medicines, then it would be the best bargaining chip in their hands.

Vincent played with Klaye’s hair. „Every time, we will go together. I’ll tell the others you’re worrying about me, that’s why you accompany me.” He released Klaye and caressed his face. „Rest a little more. After lunch, I will take you to the hospital.”

Klaye nodded and lay back on the bed.

Vincent put the blanket straight and kissed his forehead. „I’ll call you when the lunch ready.” he stood up and left the room.

Klaye closed his eyes, but couldn’t sleep. He needed some time to digest the things that happened in the last 2 days. And somehow he felt that he even dreamed about something important, but couldn’t recall...

After turning around in the bed for a while, Klaye looked out of the window. The weather was very good, only some little white clouds could be seen.

Klaye sighed. He was a little afraid to go to the hospital, but he knew Vincent was right. If he wanted to live freely in the future, he needed to pay for it. Those ability hunters would start to travel around the world after 3 years. Even those researchers were able to make some good results. Even if they didn’t have the best effect, their medicines were highly valued. The institution was highly protected and no one dared to attack them. Everyone believed that they could save humanity.

If that doctor mentioned by Vincent was really that good, he could create better medicines. Klaye trusted in Vincent, but he wasn’t sure if he could trust in the doctor. He only read the book and wasn’t hurt by those crazy researchers, but he met similar humans before. He didn’t have any good memories about them...

Klaye wasn’t able to make up his mind, but time couldn’t stop and Vincent came back. He unwillingly left the comfortable bed, changed clothes, and went down to eat lunch.

In the dining room, the others were already eating. They sat in silence and their mode wasn’t good. It seemed the last mission’s failure left a shadow on them.

Klaye slowly walked behind Vincent. He felt that the others suddenly looked at him and he felt shy. He stepped closer to Vincent and watched the floor.

„Heh, so the little princess finally wake up?” Lex mockingly walked over.

„Hah, seeing how you walk I lost my chance to be your first.” Howard sighed and shook his head. He stood next to Lex.

Klaye’s body shook. He grabbed Vincent’s shirt and stepped closer. He wished to completely disappear.

„It seems you two didn’t get enough work recently...” Vincent narrowed his eyes. „If you are done teasing Klaye, then I can give you some errands...”

„No! No! You misunderstand!” Lex waved his hands. „Yesterday Egbert spent all his time taking care of the injured. I still didn’t eat my full! Please, give me 2 more days!” he almost cried. He always looked up at Egbert’s unwavering loyalty, but deep inside his heart, he wished to destroy it. He wanted to become the most important in his heart. He wanted to be the first, but even after they became lovers he still needed to wait for his turn...

„Oh?” Vincent turned away. „Egbert! Tomorrow Team 8 will go to the next village. Help them to prepare, then go with them.”

„Yes!” Egbert stood up and left.

„Nooooo!” Lex grabbed his hair and collapsed. He couldn’t believe Vincent was so mean!

Howard smiled happily. Finally, it wasn’t his turn! During the morning he needed to look after Klaye’s dog and cat. They were unruly and gave him a hard time. When he had enough and wanted to leave them, that shitty cat controlled him and humiliated him! He couldn’t understand how Klaye could handle them.

The problematic ones were handled, so Vincent held Klaye’s hand and pulled him to sit down. The others didn’t dare to say anything and they ate with ease.

Vincent was faster, but he patiently waited for Klaye. He supported his chin with his hand and watched the other man. His sight was gentle and the corner of his mouth slowly curved up.

Howard was puzzled. He never saw Vincent with such a relaxed expression. Even when he was with Gardena, he could see there was some resistance between them. As the next head of the Warburton family, Vincent never let others too close. Friends, parents, even his lovers were more like a passerby. Howard could understand, with a high position there were too many responsibilities. He couldn’t let down his guard. So, that kid, who stupidly had a one sided crush for years, where was he different?

Howard sighed and walked away. It wasn’t his job to find it out. He was just a little jealous. Others called him Vincent’s best friend, but he never felt that way. He never got his trust, so how could he wear that title?

Klaye finished his lunch and put down the silverware.

„Do you want to see the injured?” Vincent suddenly asked him.

Klaye felt a little confused. It’s true, they would go to the hospital, but weren’t those people brought here? He believed that Vincent knew what he wanted to do and nodded.

Vincent held his hand and they went down. Klaye was familiar with this place. He used to come down and help to take care of the sick. But nowadays there wasn’t anyone. The virus already infected everyone and only some injured ones needed treatment. They were sent to the hospital, so Klaye didn’t understand why they brought them here yesterday...

Vincent suddenly went onto another corridor. Klaye was more confused but didn’t say anything. He once came here accidentally, so he knew only a storage room was at the end of it. It was a dead end.

Vincent took out a key and opened the storage room’s door. They went in and it automatically closed behind them.

Klaye stopped and watched the door. He didn’t understand, such a high tech door... why did they use it to close a storage room with cleaning supplies?

Vincent walked over to one of the walls and touched some points on it. A little window opened and a scanner was behind it. He placed his hand on it and a hidden door opened.

Klaye couldn’t close his mouth anymore. He couldn’t imagine what they wanted to hide so thoroughly...

Vincent pulled him into the little room and closed the hidden door. It wasn’t big and there wasn’t anything, but suddenly it started to move.

Klaye grabbed Vincent’s hand and he was shocked. They went down. It was an elevator!

Vincent smiled and didn’t say anything. After a minute, it finally stopped and the door opened.

Vincent placed his hand on Klaye’s back and pushed him in front of himself.

Klaye looked back at him, but in the end, he went out. He was a little afraid, but once he looked around, he only felt awe in his heart.

It was a big cave with a lake in the middle. Around it was houses carved from rocks. He saw workers craving new buildings and moving the unnecessary refuses.
