Chapter 32: 30: Revenge For Waking Me Up
Shiro groaned, muttering under his breath as the morning sunlight pierced through the room's curtains, shining directly into his face and disrupting his much-needed sleep. Squinting against the intrusive light, he rolled over and grumbled, "Can someone close the damn curtains already?"
Silence.
He sighed, expecting at least one of his dormmates, Aizen or Haruto, to respond. After all, wasn't that what roommates were for? But as he cracked one eye open, he realized neither of them had stirred. Haruto was snoring softly, sprawled out like he had fought a bear in his dreams, while Aizen lay perfectly composed, as if even his sleeping posture refused to betray any imperfection.
With a sob of resignation, Shiro begrudgingly dragged himself out of bed. The cold floor stung his feet as he shuffled to the window and yanked the curtains shut with more force than necessary. Turning back to his bed, he glanced at his two dormmates with growing irritation. His exhaustion demanded vengeance.
A wicked grin crept onto Shiro's face. He tiptoed to the bathroom, grabbed two empty lunch boxes, and filled them to the brim with ice-cold water. Returning to the room, he moved as silently as possible, one box in each hand. Standing between Aizen and Haruto's beds, he paused, savoring the moment, and then with the precision of a master prankster, dumped one box of freezing water on each of them.
Chaos erupted.
Haruto shot up, flailing like a drowning cat. "WHAT THE—SHIRO, YOU ASS!" he yelled, his voice cracking as he tried to wipe the water from his face.
Aizen's reaction was less dramatic but equally satisfying. He sat up slowly, his usually composed demeanor cracking as he glared at Shiro, water dripping from his soaked hair. "Was this really necessary?" he asked in a calm yet threatening tone, his eyes promising revenge.
Shiro, cackling like a maniac, took a step back and shrugged. "Rise and shine, boys! The early bird gets the worm!"
Haruto threw a pillow at Shiro, who dodged it effortlessly. "You're the devil! I was having the best dream of my life!" Haruto wailed. "There was this feast—chicken, beef, fish—and now I'm soaked, cold, and HUNGRY!"
Aizen sighed, shaking his head as he pushed his wet hair out of his face. "I was going to let you live today, Shiro. But now? I'll have to reconsider."
Shiro smirked. "Good luck catching me. You're all wet!" He darted out of the room, still laughing, leaving Haruto grumbling and Aizen plotting his retaliation.
System Interrupts
Later, as Shiro walked with Aizen and Haruto down the hallway toward their Kidō class, a familiar notification popped up in his mind, halting him mid-step.
System Notification:
New Quest: Increase your Imprinting Progress with your Asauchi to 40% by the end of the week.
Reward: +1.5% progress
Penalty: -2% progress
Accept?
Yes / No
Shiro frowned. His current progress wasn't great—around 25%—and increasing it to 40% in a single week felt borderline impossible. Yet, the penalty for failure loomed large. He sighed, mentally hitting "Yes" as the system accepted his choice.
"Shiro?" Haruto waved a hand in front of his face. "You good, man? You zoned out for a second."
"Yeah," Shiro replied, shaking his head to clear his thoughts. "Just... mentally preparing for the day."
Aizen raised an eyebrow. "You? Mentally preparing? That's new. I thought chaos was your only plan."
Shiro rolled his eyes but smirked. "Careful, Aizen. I still have more ice water if you want a second wake-up call."
Aizen's calm gaze met Shiro's, but the slight twitch of a smile betrayed his amusement. "I'll pass, but I appreciate the offer."
Haruto groaned. "Can we stop talking about ice water? I'm still freezing."
"Maybe next time you'll get up and close the curtains," Shiro said, clapping Haruto on the back as they entered the classroom.
The Kidō classroom was already bustling with students when they arrived, each practicing their incantations or chatting about the day ahead. Instructor Sayuri stood at the front, her sharp gaze scanning the room. As usual, her presence demanded attention, and the class quickly settled down as she raised her hand.
"Good morning, everyone," she began. "Today, we will continue working on Bakudō. I hope you've been practicing, as we will now move on to Bakudō #4: Hainawa." She gestured with her hand, conjuring a glowing rope of yellow energy that wrapped itself neatly around a wooden target dummy nearby.
"Bakudō #4: Hainawa (Crawling Rope)," she explained, "is used to bind and immobilize your opponent. Unlike Sai, it requires a steady flow of Reiryoku and precise control. Any misstep, and the rope will either snap or fail to bind effectively. Watch closely."
The demonstration ended with the glowing rope tightening, immobilizing the dummy completely. Sayuri released the spell with a flick of her wrist and turned to the class. "Now, pair up and practice. I'll be watching."
Shiro, Haruto, and Aizen exchanged glances before Haruto grinned. "So, who wants to lose to me first?"
"Lose?" Shiro scoffed. "Haruto, you couldn't bind a rock."
Aizen smirked faintly. "I'll let you two sort out who goes first. I'll observe for now."
Shiro rolled his eyes but stepped forward. "Fine. I'll go first and show you how to do it.
Shiro stood opposite Haruto, focusing on the target in front of him. He took a deep breath, recalling the precise movements and Reiryoku flow Sayuri had demonstrated. With a sharp motion, he raised his hand.
"Hainawa!"
A thin rope of yellow energy shot from Shiro's hand, wrapping around Haruto's torso. It wasn't perfect—loose in some areas—but it held firm enough to restrict Haruto's movements.
"Not bad," Haruto admitted, squirming against the bindings. "But I'm still standing. Try harder next time, rookie."
Shiro smirked. "I'll leave the squirming to you. How does it feel to be my practice dummy?"
"Enjoy this moment," Haruto retorted. "Because when it's my turn, you're going down."
Sayuri passed by, nodding in approval. "Good effort, Shiro. Tighten the flow, and it'll be much harder to break free."
Aizen, watching from the side, raised an eyebrow. "Impressive. Though I wonder if you'll hold up against someone who fights back."
Shiro turned to Aizen, his grin widening. "Care to find out?"
"Another time," Aizen said, his calm demeanor unshaken. "For now, I'm content to watch."
By the time the class ended, Shiro had managed to perform Hainawa several times, each attempt better than the last. His confidence was growing, but he knew he still had a long way to go.
As they left the classroom, Shiro felt a familiar pang in his head—a sign that the clones he had left to train the night before were dissipating. The rush of memories and experiences flooded his mind:
The shadow clone practicing Zanjutsu had refined several movements, landing multiple clean strikes against stationary targets.
The two clones training Kidō had mastered the basics of Hainawa, as well as refining Sai and Byakurai.
The clone working on Shunpo had managed to increase speed significantly, though it had stumbled multiple times during rapid direction changes.
The ninjutsu clone had made considerable progress with Water Prison Jutsu and Shark Bullet Jutsu, though the techniques still drained Reiryoku rapidly.
The overwhelming influx of information left Shiro with a splitting headache.
He staggered slightly, prompting Aizen to place a steadying hand on his shoulder.
"Are you alright?" Aizen asked, his voice calm but laced with curiosity.
Shiro waved him off, forcing a weak smile. "Yeah. Just...tired. Didn't sleep well."
Haruto frowned. "You've been acting weird all morning. Sure you're not coming down with something?"
"I'm fine," Shiro insisted, though his pale complexion betrayed him.
As Shiro lay in his bed, the exhaustion from the day's training and the influx of new memories from his clones weighed heavily on him. He could feel the pull of sleep, but before he succumbed to it, he knew he needed to do one thing—something that had become part of his routine.
With a soft groan, he pushed himself into a seated position. The bed creaked under his movement, but he ignored it. He reached over to his nightstand, where his Asauchi lay, waiting for him like an extension of himself.
His fingers brushed the cold, smooth metal of the sword's hilt, and a quiet hum seemed to resonate through the blade, as if acknowledging his touch. Shiro held the sword in front of him, the weight of it grounding him. He closed his eyes, exhaling slowly, and began to center himself.
Meditation.
It had become essential to connect with his Asauchi, to imprint his Reiryoku onto the blade and strengthen their bond. He could feel it now, the subtle hum of energy that flowed from his sword into his body. It was a slow process, but each day, it brought them closer. His hand tightened slightly around the hilt, and he focused on his breath.
Deep, steady breaths.
His mind began to clear, the dull headache that had plagued him for most of the day gradually dissipating. The images and sensations from his clones faded into the background as he focused solely on his connection with the Asauchi. It was like calming the storm within, bringing everything into balance.
Minutes turned into an hour, and with each breath, Shiro felt himself sinking deeper into a meditative state. His connection to the sword grew stronger, the sensation of power flowing between them like an invisible current.
And then, as the weight of the day finally caught up with him, Shiro allowed himself to relax. He set the Asauchi beside him and lay back down, the sense of calm still lingering.
His eyelids fluttered closed, and sleep took him swiftly.
The last thought before he drifted off was simple: Tomorrow, I'll push myself even further.
And with that, he surrendered to the embrace of sleep, the sounds of the academy fading into nothingness.
