Bound by faith the rise of a rejected mate

Chapter 21: THE DARKER

Melissa's POV

The chilly night air was heavy with unsaid words, and the clearing was tight. Dennis's face was praying as he gazed at me. Damon was still snarling close by, staring at Dennis. Torn between confusion, anxiety, and wrath, my heart was racing.

"You must comprehend," Dennis urged urgently. "This goes beyond Raven and the pack. Something much worse is on the horizon. Melissa, something connected to you.

"What are you discussing? " I crossed my arms and ordered,"Stop using riddles and start giving explanations!"

With a pale face in the moonlight, Dennis nodded. "Something ancient is a shadow being. We refer to it as "The Void." It is a force that thrives on power, particularly likeyours.

I blinked as I tried to take in what he had said. "Feeds on me? Even so, what does that mean?"

"The prophecy," said Dennis. It's not only about your ancestry bringing the pack together or breaking them up. You are the kind of person the Void has been waiting for aeons. You will become the key to its waking if you truly accept your skills.

"That is absurd! Damon stepped forward and snapped. "You're merely attempting to frighten her. Melissa, don't listen to him.

My voice was shaking as I glanced at Dennis. Is it the reason you've been collaborating with Raven? Due to this... Void?"

"Yes," Dennis acknowledged. Raven is also aware of it. He believes that by controlling you, he can stop it, but that isn't the solution. I was looking for an alternative.

It felt like the world I thought I knew was collapsing as the earth underneath me shifted. "Why didn't you inform me earlier? Why not tell anyone?"

Dennis let out a sigh. "Did you think I was real? You hardly trust me anymore.

He was not mistaken. But after everything, how could I trust him?

I sat by myself by the fire in the pack's camp and gazed into the flames. My mind was racing with uncertainty and confusion. With his arms folded across from me, Damon sat.

"You don't think he's real, do you? Damon broke the silence by asking.

I said, "I'm not sure what to believe." "What if he is being honest? What if something worse than Raven exists?"

Damon gave a headshake. Dennis isn't the solution, even if there is. He has already cheated on us once.

However, what if I'm the issue? More to myself than to him, I muttered.

Damon scowled. "What are you discussing?"

After a moment of hesitation, I informed him of Dennis's remarks regarding The Void. Damon's face changed from incredulous to worried as I continued.

When I was done, he exclaimed, "That's crazy." "You're not some... a shadow monster's weapon. You're Melissa. You are courageous, strong, and very different from what he is saying.

The doubt persisted even though I wanted to believe him.

The pack assembled in the main hall the following morning. Everyone was whispering about the prophecy and the increasing threat of rogues, and the anxiety was evident.

With a dominating voice, Alpha Gideon stood at the head of the room. According to accounts, the rogues are constructing something. A weapon. Something that is intended to focus on Melissa's skills.

I gasped. "A weapon? How?"

Gideon looked at me, his face glum. "We're not sure yet. However, we cannot allow them to complete it. If they succeed…" He left the sentence hanging, but the meaning was obvious.

Beside me, Damon remarked, "They're doing this because they're afraid of you."

"They ought to be," I whispered, but my assurance sounded phoney.

Damon looked across at Gideon. "Before they can use this weapon, we must locate it and destroy it."

What about Raven? A person in the throng inquired. "He's still out there, making plans for whatever."

Gideon gave a nod. "We'll take care of Raven, but this weapon comes first. Now is the time for everyone with information to share it.

There was silence in the room.

A recognizable voice interrupted me later that day as I was getting ready to join the scouting party.

Raven replied, emerging from the shadows, "Well, if it isn't the chosen one."

With my heart racing, I froze. Damon took a defensive stance and stepped in front of me right away.

"Remain back," Damon snarled.

With a sneer on his lips, Raven raised his hands. "Calm down. I'm not fighting here.

"So, what would you like? I asked, sounding sharper than I meant to.

"To speak," Raven said plainly. "I assume you've heard about The Void?"

My blood froze. "What is your knowledge of it?"

Raven answered, "More than Dennis ever could." Melissa, he's playing a risky game. One that will ultimately lead to your demise.

"You think I'll trust you? I fired back.

Something like earnestness took the place of Raven's smirk. "I don't need your belief. However, the reality still stands. The Void is real, and it will arrive soon. It will awaken if you keep going in this direction. And even I am powerless to stop it when it occurs.

"Why should I have faith in you? I made a demand.

"Because I don't lie to you like Dennis does," Raven added, taking a step closer. Instead of letting The Void loose, I'm attempting to stop it.

His implication-laden remarks lingered in the atmosphere.

With his hands clenched, Damon took a step forward. "Enough. Let's go, Melissa. Don't pay attention to him.

However, I was immobile. I was unable to talk.

Raven fixed his eyes on mine. "You have a choice, Melissa. If you join me, we may be able to put an end to this. Or keep fighting me and see your pack go down.

I stood there in a state of indecision as he turned and vanished into the darkness.

Damon took hold of my arm and spoke urgently. "Melissa, try not to think about him. You are being manipulated by him.

"Perhaps," I muttered. "Or perhaps he is correct."

Damon's expression was one of disbelief as he gazed at me. "You're not serious."

However, I was no longer certain.

I kept thinking about Raven's words as we made our way back to the camp. With him as an ally? Betray the group? Would I even entertain the idea?

That night, I sat by myself and stared into the crackling fire. My mind was a jumble of uncertainty and anxiety.

Then I noticed it. There was a black, moving shadow in the corner of my eye that seemed to be alive.

The space.

The darkness whispered my name, sending a shiver down my spine.
