Chapter 35: Nalan Yanran
Yunlan Sect's Grand Elder, Yun Leng!
Chen Guan immediately recognized him, as they had briefly met before at the coming-of-age ceremony.
Yun Leng noticed his gaze and didn't shy away, responding with a meaningful smile, one that looked as sinister as a snake.
Behind Yun Leng sat another familiar face, Mo Family's Grand Elder, Mo Cheng, whispering something in conversation and also sizing up the young man.
Seeing these two colluding, Chen Guan had a feeling that he was the topic of their conversation, and it wasn't going to be anything good.
His spiritual power stirred slightly, but after a moment of thought, he chose not to extend it to 'eavesdrop.' That would be too obvious, and the people here were no pushovers.
Not to mention Fa Ma and Gu He, who were seated above, would certainly notice. Chen Guan returned a similarly enigmatic smile and suppressed his thoughts.
However, what Chen Guan hadn't expected was that his earlier actions transmitted a completely wrong signal to someone else.
Mo Cheng, by coincidence, happened to lock eyes with him just as his spiritual power surged. For a moment, Mo Cheng felt a wave of dizziness in his mind, snapping out of it only after a few seconds.
What kind of eyes are these?! Mo Cheng's heart trembled.
He hadn't even considered that the cause of this was Chen Guan's overwhelming spiritual power. Instead, he ruled out the correct answer immediately and believed he had discovered some kind of special eyes.
Cutting to the chase, Mo Cheng developed a bold idea.
He wanted Chen Guan's eyes!
(T/N: Uchiha Madara is our inspiration!)
Glancing at Jia Xingtian, who was chatting freely with Fa Ma across from him—extremely powerful, far beyond his ability to resist—Mo Cheng felt a sense of intimidation. Yet when he thought of Yun Leng and the Yunlan Sect behind him, he began to feel there might still be a way to make it happen.
"That's Yunlan Sect's Grand Elder, and behind him is Mo Cheng, Grand Elder of the Mo Family. He's always following the orders of the Grand Elder."
A cold voice entered his ear, as Nalan Yanran took the initiative to introduce them.
It was obvious she had been observing the young man's actions, assuming he was curious about the two elders.
Nalan Yanran harbored some resistance toward Yun Leng and Mo Cheng. Despite her teacher being the sect master, these two showed little respect for her. Yun Leng relied on his seniority, while Mo Cheng was even worse, offering only superficial gestures when greeting her teacher. He was essentially the Grand Elder's lackey.
Although Nalan Yanran had only been apprenticed for a few years, Yun Yun treated her with great care. The two of them had a close relationship, more like sisters than teacher and student.
As a staunch supporter of the sect master, it was only natural that Nalan Yanran found it hard to like those two.
"Thank you," Chen Guan nodded in appreciation.
The Mo Family? Nothing but insignificant bitches and dogs. No need to pay too much attention.
Yun Leng, on the other hand, had some skill, but unfortunately, he was a retard.
In the original timeline, Yunlan Sect's tragic downfall was 90% due to this old fool. If not for him, after Xiao Yan got his revenge, the three-year agreement would have been the end of it. Both sides would have gone their separate ways.
(T/N: For some reason, the MC loves to call Xiao Yan Xiao Huo Huo, lmao. So, do let me know whether I should change Xiao Huo Huo to Xiao Yan or stay true to the source.
For beginners, Huo means 'Fire' in Chinese meanwhile Yan means 'Beautiful')
Yet Yun Leng had a knack for courting disaster, dragging the entire Yunlan Sect down with him. If Chen Guan were Yun Shan, he'd probably have the urge to kill him himself.
Truly, he was the bad apple that spoiled the whole barrel.
No longer paying attention to Yun Leng, Chen Guan turned his focus to the training grounds.
With a long speech and encouragement from an elder, the sect's grand competition finally began.
The Yunlan Sect disciples were divided into outer, inner, and direct disciples.
Accordingly, the competition was divided into three stages.
The outer disciples were like weaklings pecking at each other. Few matches left any real impression on the guests present.
The inner disciples' duels, however, were much more exciting. These were fighters above the Dou Practitioner level, and the array of elemental Dou techniques was dazzling.
Overall, their skills were commendable, displaying Yunlan Sect's youthful vigor and the flourishing trend it was heading toward.
Chen Guan glanced at Jia Xingtian, seated diagonally across from him. Sure enough, the old man's smile had faded somewhat.
After the outer and inner disciple matches concluded, it was time for the direct disciples to battle.
This was the segment everyone had been waiting for. Although these direct disciples might not have the highest current power levels, each one was being groomed to inherit the sect's legacy, essentially the future backbone of Yunlan Sect.
Nalan Yanran appeared during this stage.
As Yun Yun's direct disciple, she undoubtedly became the center of attention.
Unfazed by the pressure of being in the spotlight, Nalan Yanran performed exceptionally. With her Ninth Stage of Dou Disciple, she defeated six fellow direct disciples of the same level in a row, only withdrawing from exhaustion.
This battle alone made sure that Nalan Yanran's name would be remembered by everyone present, and it upheld the reputation of the sect master's direct disciple.
Listening to the wave of praise for Nalan Yanran, Nalan Su laughed heartily, feeling immensely proud.
Even Yun Yun, sitting in the main seat, showed a satisfied smile, like a spring breeze, like the evening glow—solemn yet beautiful.
Nalan Yanran had already become a reflection of Yun Yun. After stepping off the stage, her first glance was toward her teacher, completely ignoring her proud father on the other side. Seeing her teacher smile, she too was filled with joy, radiating happiness.
Returning to her seat, she unexpectedly asked the young man beside her, with whom she was not very familiar, "How did I do?"
She found it hard to believe the rumors about Chen Guan, but her teacher wouldn't lie to her. Unconsciously, she had already set her heart on catching up to him as a goal. So naturally, she was curious about his evaluation.
"Very impressive. Your future is bright."
Chen Guan spoke kindly. Compliments don't cost anything, after all.
Besides, her performance was indeed good. You can't compare others to yourself, right?
What he didn't expect was that such high praise didn't please Nalan Yanran, but instead offended her.
"Are you mocking me?"
Chen Guan glanced at Nalan Yanran's cold expression, feeling baffled. He had given her a compliment, and she wasn't satisfied. Did she want him to ridicule her instead?
Maybe she had some... special tendencies?
Not in the mood to argue, Chen Guan stood up and walked toward Yun Yun, as the competition was basically over. It was time to discuss serious matters.
Nalan Yanran, being ignored, gripped her sword tightly, filled with anger and shame. Never before had she felt so wronged.
Especially when she clearly heard the boy mutter "idiot" as he walked away, nearly making her explode on the spot. Her resentment skyrocketed, and in the blink of an eye, Chen Guan had become the number one person she wanted to teach a lesson.
Chen Guan had no idea what she was thinking. Even if he did, he wouldn't care.
Nalan Yanran right now was still a bit immature and idealistic. She tended to take things to extremes when faced with disappointment, with a bit of a spoiled young lady's attitude. Only someone like Yun Yun, with her temperament, could handle her.
Simply put, she hadn't yet faced the harsh realities of life.
That didn't make her bad. At her age, given her upbringing, immaturity was normal.
Chen Guan could understand this, but that didn't mean he liked it. He had no interest in playing games with her.
Compared to the still-naive Nalan Yanran, he much preferred the company of mature, understanding women like Yao Ye and Yun Yun.
For the record, Chen Guan had no improper thoughts about Sister Yao Ye, nor did he take their previous jokes to heart. Honestly! (T/N: Really? ಡ ͜ ʖ ಡ)
