Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 18 - Mentor's Lecture

The perspective of a familiar person differs from that of a stranger. Perhaps Ruo Manni’s lack of any sense of unfamiliarity with Instructor Fang led her not to notice anything unusual about Ruo Manni.

Or perhaps all of her attention was captivated by Ruo Manni’s significant changes, her face filled with suspicion as she focused on how Ruo Manni’s cultivation had shifted so dramatically overnight.

“Ruo Manni, how did your physical skills advance by a whole level in just one night? What did you do?”

Not all advancements are beneficial; some methods can hinder future development.

Especially since Ruo Manni’s mother was missing, leaving her alone at home. Although Instructor Fang and Captain Lin could monitor Ruo Manni’s situation through the robotic housekeeper, a mischievous child always finds a way to act on their intentions.

The two instructors became increasingly uneasy, their brows furrowing in concern.

“Instructor… I, I did something foolish yesterday. I was persuaded by others and bought a second-generation gene enhancement serum…”

“What?” Instructor Fang’s expression changed dramatically. “You can’t use that! This kind of gene serum hasn’t gone through clinical trials and hasn’t been officially validated… You must understand that the side effects could be beyond what humans can bear, unless it’s been tested like the first-generation serum, which is confirmed safe for use.”

“How could you be so impulsive? Why didn’t you consult with us instructors?” Vasilievich also broke into a cold sweat; this child is usually so obedient, who knew she could be so reckless.

“I’m sorry, teachers. I was too impulsive, and I didn’t want to worry you, so I didn’t tell you. In the end, I almost died last night.” Ruo Manni could only take the blame for this foolish act.

Seeing the two instructors’ faces change immediately after hearing her words, Ruo Manni quickly reassured Instructor Fang, “But the effects are great! I feel like my physique has improved a lot. In just one night, my physical skills have reached the late stage of level two, and my mental power has also advanced to the mid-stage of level four.”

After hearing Ruo Manni describe her experience with the second-generation gene enhancement serum, the two instructors couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of anxiety for this reckless child. They wished they could break their teaching principles and give her a good lesson.

Her instructors were shocked that she had used the serum without consulting them first, but now that she had acted impulsively, there was nothing they could do but express their concerns.

“Instructor Fang, it’s time for class. Please take this child to the academy’s medical facility for a check-up. If anything comes up, message me,” said Vasilievich, the department head, wielding more authority than Instructor Fang.

“Okay.” Instructor Fang took the room card and couldn’t help but scold Ruo Manni, “Even if you can’t get into the first military academy this year, you can still try next year. By then, the conclusions about the serum should be out. You were too impulsive; what if something goes wrong? You could lose everything.”

“Ruo Manni, with your level as a mentalist, even if you can’t get into the first military academy, you can still get into the second one for sure. As long as you have the capability, you still have a bright future ahead. You need to be more careful in the future.” Seeing Instructor Fang’s serious expression, Vasilievich softened his tone a bit.

The two instructors genuinely hoped for her well-being, and Ruo Manni obediently promised never to do something so foolish again. With class time approaching, Vasilievich had no time to say more and hurriedly left after reminding Instructor Fang.

Instructor Fang was very concerned that the serum might have harmed Ruo Manni’s health. Without further delay, she took her to the school’s medical room and had her lie down in the examination and treatment chamber.

Ruo Manni lay in the chamber for quite a while, almost dozing off, before Instructor Fang let her out.

“How was it?” Ruo Manni asked, feeling quite good and confident there was no problem.

“There are no hidden injuries; your body is very healthy,” Instructor Fang said, greatly relieved.

Although the child’s reckless behavior was worrisome, seeing Ruo Manni make such significant progress without any adverse effects from the gene enhancement serum made Instructor Fang genuinely happy for her.

Instructor Fang then took Ruo Manni to the adjacent testing room to evaluate her physical potential.

To her surprise, after the enhancement, Ruo Manni’s warrior potential had risen to C-level. No wonder her cultivation had jumped a whole level.

Instructor Fang was both shocked and delighted. “Dear, your mother’s wish can finally be fulfilled! With your physical level and talent for mecha manufacturing, getting into the first military academy will definitely not be a problem.”

After celebrating Ruo Manni’s success for a moment, Instructor Fang’s instinct to keep students humble kicked in, and she quickly composed herself, resuming her role as a teacher.

“Of course, even though the outcome is good, it doesn’t mean your mistake can be erased. You mustn’t do such things again. One cannot rely on luck every time; caution and prudence are the way to go for the long term.”

Ruo Manni obediently agreed. Initially, she planned to say that Aoi Dan had encouraged her to do this, hoping to let Instructor Fang know of Aoi Dan’s harmful intentions.

However, after thinking it over, she changed her mind. Aoi Dan was also Instructor Fang’s student. If she spoke up, even though Instructor Fang wouldn’t see Aoi Dan as particularly malicious, she would definitely talk to her about the mistake.

Instructor Fang was a good mentor, but Aoi Dan was not kind-hearted. Ruo Manni feared that Aoi Dan might hold a grudge against Instructor Fang and wish her harm. Even though Captain Lin had the ability to protect, some things were difficult to guard against, and Ruo Manni didn’t want any accidents to happen to Instructor Fang.

So when Instructor Fang asked who had encouraged her, Ruo Manni put on a “I can’t say because I promised” expression. In the end, Instructor Fang had no choice but to let it go.

“After using the second-generation gene enhancement serum, it should have a weak, sustained enhancement effect for another month, just like the first generation. Therefore, during this month, your main task is to use intensive training to enhance the serum’s effects before its potency completely dissipates. Also, since your cultivation has suddenly risen by a large level, remember that this doesn’t equate to practical combat ability. You need to hone your combat skills well during this month to solidify your cultivation; otherwise, it’s not impossible for your level to regress.” Instructor Fang was knowledgeable about these matters due to her husband.

The cultural classes for the graduating class had already finished half a month ago, and now the students of Mingxin Secondary School were all preparing for their entrance exams to higher institutions.

Ruo Manni had always been the top student in her grade for cultural subjects. Instructor Fang knew her student’s capabilities, so she was confident that Ruomanni would pass the cultural exam for the Xuan Gu First Military Academy, and her scores would likely be good. However, she was less certain about her mecha manufacturing skills.
