Demon Slayer: Strength Gained with Every Swing of the Sword

Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The First Encounter with the Demon

"Ah! A dead body!"

The terrified shout quickly spread throughout the entire village.

"What happened?"

"It seems to be from the direction of the Yeban family..."

"Quick, let's go see..."

...

The screams reached Feng Yu, who furrowed his brow and muttered, "Could it be that a demon is killing people?"

"I hope not. We're not strong enough to defend against a demon's attack, and we don't even know if this demon is just a regular one or one that possesses demon magic..."

Filled with unease, he quickly ran toward the scene.

When he arrived, the area was already surrounded by people, with the oldest elder in the village trying to maintain order, calming the crowd.

"Quiet!" the elder urged, his hands shaking as he held onto his cane. "By the looks of this, it seems the man-eating beast from the neighboring village has set its sights on us. Our priority now is to notify the guards immediately…"

"To prevent another tragedy before the soldiers arrive, everyone must lock their doors tightly at night, and..."

Feng Yu wasn't listening to the elder's instructions anymore. His eyes were fixed on the mangled corpse, the remains of someone eaten by the demon.

"Ha~"

Feng Yu sighed deeply.

"This is strange. If I saw something like this in my previous life, I might have thrown up or started trembling. But now, I feel nothing at all..."

"No matter what, after nightfall, the demon will definitely go hunting again. I just don't know who the unlucky soul will be..."

"However, in the animes from my past life, most demons liked to..."

"From the looks of it, this village and the neighboring one have become hunting grounds for the demon..."

"What should I do? Ordinary weapons can't kill a demon, and I don't even know if the Demon Slayer Corps is aware of the demon attacks happening here..."

Thinking about how he was one of the primary targets for most demons made a chill run through Feng Yu's body.

"Hey, Feng Yu!"

Feng Yu turned to see Meixiu's father calling him.

"Stupid boy, before the guards arrive, come with me to my house. You're all alone here, and if something happens, you won't know right away."

Meixiu's father said, pulling Feng Yu away from the scene.

"Go back, get your toiletries ready for tonight, and come straight over."

Feng Yu sensed that Meixiu's father seemed to know something...

Feng Yu didn't say much. After all, the more people there were, the more power they had. He wasn't strong enough to handle a demon on his own, and Meixiu's father was a much stronger force.

"Maybe I should prepare more ropes..."

...

Nightfall arrived quickly, and the village grew eerily quiet, but beneath that silence was a creeping sense of danger.

"Hahaha, what do you need so many ropes for? You don't think these ropes will catch a man-eating beast, do you?"

"Uncle, do you really think it's just a wild animal attacking people?"

Feng Yu stared at him as he asked.

Meixiu's father fell silent.

"You mean... it's not possible? Those are just fictional stories..."

He quickly shook his head. After all, those kinds of things were just hearsay. Deep down, he still believed that a large, savage animal was the culprit.

"Why do legends exist? Because someone must have lived through it and witnessed it firsthand. It's better to believe in it than dismiss it. Uncle, if it's really that kind of thing, I think just relying on knives and axes won't work. And from what I know, only sunlight can kill it..."

"Where did you hear that only sunlight can kill it?"

Meixiu's father asked with confusion.

"I don't think I've ever said that only sunlight can kill it..."

Feng Yu replied.

Meixiu and her mother looked at the two of them, discussing what "it" was, unsure of what was even being said.

They could only pray in their hearts.

"Alright, you two, it's late, get some sleep,"

Meixiu's father said, and both Feng Yu and he exchanged glances before giving up on the conversation. They both sighed inwardly.

The rural night was terrifyingly quiet, and Feng Yu couldn't sleep. He lay on his back, staring at the pitch-black ceiling, hearing the sound of his own heartbeat.

Time ticked by, and his eyelids started to feel heavy.

At this moment, Meixiu's father was already snoring.

Suddenly, Feng Yu thought he heard something.

Footsteps... and the sound of a door opening!

In an instant, his drowsiness faded, and his heartbeat quickened.

"Uncle, wake up, something's happening..."

Feng Yu carefully got up and shook Meixiu's father, who was still asleep.

"Mm… what's wrong, Feng Yu?"

Meixiu's father yawned sleepily.

"It sounds like someone's outside..."

Feng Yu whispered.

At these words, Meixiu's father immediately lost all sleepiness. He grabbed an axe and a knife for defense, while Feng Yu took a knife and some ropes.

"Take care of my daughter. You two hide in the cupboard and stay quiet."

By this time, Meixiu's mother had also woken up. Without saying a word, she picked up Meixiu and hid her in the cupboard.

Before leaving, she reminded them to be careful.

The "clack-clack" sound of footsteps grew louder. Feng Yu and Meixiu's father each stood at the sides of the door, preparing to strike as soon as the door opened.

"Crack!"

The door creaked open a bit.

Instantly, a terrible stench filled the air, and a black-green hand with sharp claws reached in.

Meanwhile, it murmured, "Delicious... I'm coming... Hehehe..."

"Attack, Feng Yu!"

Meixiu's father shouted. In that instant, both of them swung their weapons.

"Ah!"

"Bang!"

The door was forcefully knocked open.

What appeared before them was a demon with blood-red eyes and sharp teeth.

"You cursed humans, you made me feel pain. You won't escape. I'll eat you all!"

Its evil, greedy gaze fixed on Feng Yu and Meixiu's father. It quickly picked up its severed hand from the ground.

"Uncle, it has powerful self-healing abilities. Our knives and axes aren't doing anything to it. I suggest we try cutting off its head and body separately, then tie it up and wait for the sunlight to kill it..."

"Cut off its head? We won't know if it works until we try..."

Meixiu's father's eyes sharpened. He grabbed the axe and charged, with Feng Yu following closely behind.

"Bang!"

A loud crash rang out.

Meixiu's father and Feng Yu missed their target. The demon was incredibly fast and dodged in the blink of an eye.

Soon, however, they had the advantage because the small space of the house greatly restricted the demon's movements.

Although the demon wasn't afraid of their knives and axes, it still felt pain, so it focused its attacks on Feng Yu, who was younger.

While Feng Yu wasn't as strong as Meixiu's father, his practice with the knife over the past six months gave him a certain skill, allowing him to injure the demon repeatedly.

Meixiu's father and Feng Yu both suffered injuries. They had been fighting the demon for quite some time, but the demon, sensing dawn was approaching, began to grow anxious, wanting to escape. However, Feng Yu and his father blocked the door.

The two sides were at a standstill. Suddenly, the demon seemed to sense something. Its blood-red eyes turned, and it quickly headed toward the cupboard where Meixiu and her mother were hiding.

"No! Feng Yu, the demon is heading towards Meixiu and her mother!"

"Damn!"

Feng Yu and Meixiu's father panicked, but the demon was faster, closing in on the cupboard.

Overwhelming anger surged within Feng Yu. His grip on the knife grew firmer, and his strength surged beyond normal levels. Without thinking, he swung the long knife with all his might, aiming for the demon's thigh.

In that split second, Feng Yu felt a rush of air fill his lungs, his blood flowing faster, and his strength multiplied several times over.

"Bang!"

The demon collapsed to the ground, its dark red blood pooling on the floor. Feng Yu and Meixiu's father stared in disbelief—the demon's thigh had been severed!

Quickly, they rushed forward, but the demon, still conscious, tried to reach for its severed leg. Feng Yu and Meixiu's father had already gotten to it, pinning the demon's body down.

The demon's strength was immense, and in an instant, Meixiu's father was thrown aside.

Seeing this, Feng Yu quickly grabbed the long knife and struck again.

The demon instinctively raised its hands to block.

"Crack!"

The demon's arms were severed.

Before it could react, Feng Yu continued swinging, striking the demon's neck.

The sound of the Sword slicing through flesh rang out, but this time, the neck wasn't severed.

Feng Yu shouted, "Quick, help me!"

Meixiu's father, injured and with broken bones, ignored his pain. If they didn't act fast, everyone would die.

With gritted teeth, he rushed over and pushed with all his strength, sending the demon's body crashing to the ground.

Feng Yu struck at the demon's neck with a vicious force.

"Crack!"

This time, the demon's neck was completely severed, and its head fell off.

The body twitched for a moment before finally going still. It had died.

Panting heavily, Feng Yu fell back to the ground, covered in blood.

Meixiu's father also sat on the floor, his heart racing as he looked at their destroyed home.

After everything that had just happened, it was beyond his understanding.

Who would have thought that the legendary creature would appear right before his eyes?

And that he himself had nearly lost his life in the process.

All of this, however, was thanks to that young man, Feng Yu.

After a moment of reflection, he finally remembered the two women still hiding in the cupboard.

He quickly called them out.

When they emerged and saw Feng Yu lying on the ground, with her husband covered in injuries, his broken leg already swollen and inflamed, Meixiu's mother couldn't hold back her tears. She immediately began rummaging through their belongings, searching for medicinal herbs to tend to their wounds.

Looking at the demon's severed limbs still twitching, Meixiu's mother, trembling with fear, asked in a shaky voice, "What... what is this thing...?"

Meixiu's father didn't offer much of an explanation. After all, dawn was approaching. Once the sun rose, the demon would be reduced to ashes.

Saying too much would only make Meixiu and her mother even more frightened.

"It's okay, everything's been taken care of..."

Meixiu's father gently cupped Meixiu's mother's face in his hands, wiping away her tears as he softly reassured her.

Meanwhile, Feng Yu and the others, waiting for the sun to rise, were about to face the arrival of someone who had been delayed...
