Chapter 49: Chapter 50: The Rise of a Pillar
Throughout the journey, Feng Yu walked on foot, the reason being that Xiao Hei had mysteriously disappeared somewhere.
After walking for a while, Feng Yu spoke up.
"Xiao Bai, I think I've lost my way…"
Feng Yu addressed the little fox perched on his shoulder.
Hearing his call, Xiao Bai slowly opened its eyes, stretched, and said, "Wherever the master goes, Xiao Bai will follow..."
"You little fox, seriously, I'm asking you for advice, and you're telling me you'll follow me wherever I go. If I had a destination, would I need to ask you?"
Feng Yu flicked Xiao Bai on the forehead.
"Emmm... how about we go back to the Butterfly Mansion?"
"I'm not sure if Shinobu would try to kill me when she sees me..."
"The Butterfly Mansion is a no-go..."
"And there are no missions right now... I don't know where the other Pillars live, and besides, Xiao Hei is still missing."
"When Xiao Hei comes back, I'm definitely giving it a good beating."
Just as Feng Yu finished speaking, Xiao Hei flew down from the sky.
"Gaa gaa! Master, return to the Headquarters, the leader summons you, the leader summons you!"
With those words, Xiao Hei gently landed and transformed into its small, black flying mount form, waiting for Feng Yu to hop on.
"Could it be...?"
Feng Yu had already begun to guess the reason why Kagaya Ubuyashiki had summoned him, and so he followed Xiao Hei to the Demon Slayer Corps' headquarters.
Upon entering the courtyard, Feng Yu saw Kagaya Ubuyashiki seated in front of the house's corridor, with Ubuyashiki Kiriya and his sister Ubuyashiki Kuina on either side.
The entire courtyard had only three people; Feng Yu thought the other Pillars might be there as well.
"Good afternoon, Nakagawa Feng Yu . The weather is just as beautiful today."
Kagaya Ubuyashiki said with a smile.
Feng Yu knelt on one knee as a gesture of respect.
"Good afternoon, Leader."
"I already know of the contributions you've made recently, and do you remember what I told you last time? About becoming one of the Pillars of the Demon Slayer Corps, protecting humanity, and fighting demons?"
Kagaya Ubuyashiki said calmly.
"Yes, I remember."
Feng Yu responded.
"Half a year ago, you passed the final trial, completed three missions, killed two lower-ranked demons by yourself—Lower Moon Three, Byakusho, and Lower Moon Four, Tokizaki. You've slain countless demons and contributed both the Cleansing Pill and Healing Pills."
"These are the contributions you've made since joining the Demon Slayer Corps."
Ubuyashiki Kirigaya spoke up from the side.
"Now, Nakagawa Feng Yu , first, on behalf of the Demon Slayer Corps, I thank you for your contributions. Second, are you willing to become one of the Pillars?"
"Two titles: Water Pillar and Light Pillar."
"Your self-created Light Breathing has already reached the Fourth Form. I believe you can continue to develop its techniques."
"As for the Water Pillar, it is currently held by Giyu Tomioka. He has even informed me that he is willing to step down and recommend you for the position, but I think the two of you can share the title."
"The reason the Pillars are called 'Pillars' is because their power is unparalleled, able to support the entire organization and lead the Corps against the demons."
"The title of Pillar is not about how strong one person is but about whether they can earn the recognition of others."
"Whether it's strength or contribution, you have already earned the qualifications to become a Pillar."
"So, I would like to invite you to become a Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps!"
Kagaya Ubuyashiki said calmly.
"Becoming the Light Pillar, or sharing the Water Pillar title with Giyu...?"
Feng Yu thought to himself.
"Leader, then I accept the position of the tenth Pillar in the organization, the Light Pillar."
Feng Yu spoke with firm determination.
"Good."
A smile finally appeared on Kagaya Ubuyashiki's face.
"You really are just like Shinobu said, you would take the Light Pillar title, not the Water Pillar."
"Shinobu?"
Feng Yu asked, puzzled.
"Yes, a couple of days ago, she recommended you to become a Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps, and she told me everything you've done, which is why I've summoned you personally."
"Go ahead, Shinobu."
Kagaya Ubuyashiki gestured towards the door behind him.
Feng Yu : "!!!"
The door behind Kagaya Ubuyashiki slowly opened, and a familiar figure appeared.
"It's been a long time, Feng Yu -kun."
Shinobu Kochou greeted Feng Yu with a smile.
"Cough, cough… Shinobu… It's been a long time…"
Feng Yu felt like he had just been choked, his throat itching so badly that he could only cough, not wanting to speak.
Originally, Feng Yu had prepared himself to be beaten by Shinobu, but to his surprise, there was no sign of it after quite a while.
Looking up, Shinobu still had that ever-present smile, but this time, unlike before, there was a fluctuation of emotion in her eyes, no longer the vacant expression she used to wear.
"It seems like she has really changed…"
Feng Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
"But maybe she's just reluctant to act in front of Kagaya Ubuyashiki…"
"I should stay away from her later, otherwise, if she suddenly stabs me, I'll probably die from poison before I even know it…"
The more Feng Yu thought about it, the more convinced he became.
"Cough, cough."
Kagaya Ubuyashiki began coughing heavily.
"Both of you, please leave. The Leader needs some rest."
Ubuyashiki Kirigaya spoke.
So, Feng Yu and Shinobu left after watching Kagaya Ubuyashiki retreat into the house.
"Feng Yu -kun seems to be afraid of me?"
Shinobu said with a smile.
"Ah... really? I just have a few things on my mind..."
Feng Yu shivered slightly as she spoke.
"Great, this woman isn't planning on making a move, is she...?"
"Don't worry, Feng Yu -kun, I'm not angry anymore. I'll take better care of myself from now on."
After saying that, Shinobu left, leaving Feng Yu standing there in surprise.
"She's just leaving?"
"And she just said... she would take better care of herself?"
"Did I hear that right? Xiao Bai?"
Feng Yu looked at his companion.
"Yes, Master, what Lady Shinobu said was indeed that she would take better care of her health."
Xiao Bai replied truthfully.
"Well, that's good… at least this changes the course of things. Perhaps the tragic end can be avoided..."
Feng Yu thought back to how Shinobu had sacrificed herself without killing Doma, with Kanao and Inosuke ultimately delivering the final blow.
Though the poison Shinobu carried played a key role in Doma's demise, Feng Yu always felt it was somewhat tragic.
She gave up her life without ever seeing her enemy die.
Shinobu's character had been deeply cut by the original story's writer.
"Hopefully, this time, my actions will bring about a change in her fate..."
Feng Yu thought.
"By the way, Xiao Bai... where do you think we should rest?"
Xiao Bai: "?"
...
Before long, the news of Feng Yu officially becoming the tenth Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps spread to every member.
