Chapter 19 - Purge
Receiving a hand signal from Letty, Ellie responded and stood in front of the guild’s doors.
From what she had heard, just beyond the entrance was a large hall, and through the door, she could hear the voices of men drinking and making noises.
Letty had already confirmed with her detection magic that there were many people inside.
Ellie gathered mana into both hands as she stood at the door.
A little in her right hand, more in her left.
Glancing at the door’s hinges, she took aim.
With a small sound, Ellie released the magic in her right hand, two beams of light shot out, piercing through the hinges.
Then, with a loud bang, she kicked the door open and rushed inside.
“Good evening everyone!!”
She greeted them in a loud voice.
The men froze in confusion, and in that instant, Ellie scanned the room and finished aiming.
“Shoot!!”
She released the magic she had gathered in her left hand.
The beams of light struck the chests and heads of the dozen or so men, causing them to collapse one after another.
“W-What the hell? What’s going on?!”
One of the men who had not been hit finally managed to speak.
Without answering, Ellie scanned the room once more to ensure there were no survivors and took aim.
Another beam of light shot through the room, finally clearing it.
“…No movement detected. Area secured.”
Ellie’s expression and voice were mechanical and emotionless, completely different from how she had been when talking to Letty.
She showed no sign of enjoying the overwhelmingly easy victory, as if it were only natural.
Hearing footsteps thudding down from the second floor, Ellie turned her attention towards the newly arrived reinforcements.
“Enemy reinforcements confirmed. Proceeding to eliminate them.”
Once again, she gathered mana in both hands.
This time, she stored a reasonable amount in both hands—enough to take down a dozen or so enemies.
Considering the number of footsteps, it was an excessive amount of firepower, but Ellie didn’t seem concerned at all.
“Master has entrusted this to me. Failure is not an option.”
A slight smile returned to her face, showing her enthusiasm.
The plan was for Letty to infiltrate the guild master’s room on the fourth floor and eliminate Hans. At the signal, Ellie would storm in and secure the area from the first floor upwards. Letty would then descend from the top, cutting down anyone trying to escape.
The goal was annihilation through a pincer attack. No one would be allowed to escape.
Increasing the sensitivity of her sensors to ensure she didn’t miss any movement, Ellie headed for the stairs to intercept the reinforcements.
Among the collapsed men, she noticed one who was slightly better dressed.
Without any particular changes in her expression, she resumed heading toward the stairs.
…Gold, one of the few members of Hans’ gang, who had helped Hans to eliminate Greg had indulged in drinking parties with his subordinates, was later confirmed to have lost his life in the surprise attack without even a chance to resist.
—
Letty, having left the guild master’s room, had dealt with the people on the fourth floor and secured the area.
Most of the guild members had likely been at the banquet downstairs, so there were few people left.
Moreover, most of the remaining ones were heavily drunk and were easily disposed of without much resistance.
She didn’t feel great about taking down such careless opponents, nor about being considered a successor by them.
She was also appalled by their lack of thoroughness.
“Well… I guess both Greg and I were also too soft…”
They had failed to detect or prevent Hans’ betrayal.
This was clearly due to their softness and overconfidence in their own people.
Or perhaps it was their insensitivity to the allure of the guild’s power, wealth, and influence.
Even after taking the recent 500 mithril coins, the guild still had easily accumulated around 1,000 mithril coins.
And then there was her assassination abilities, client information—valuable assets that could be used in many ways.
Having built it all from the ground up, maybe they didn’t fully understand the value of what they had.
“…Hmm…? Isn’t that the same for Hans?”
A sudden doubt crossed her mind, but the sound of footsteps from downstairs interrupted her thoughts.
“Ellie’s doing great… I should get to work too.”
While murmuring that, Letty descended to the third floor.
—
Thanks to Ellie’s magical barrage and Letty’s stealth based fast combat, the guild was swiftly brought under control.
There had been about 40 people in total, but the ambush had been so perfectly executed that there had been almost no resistance.
“Ellie, good work.”
“Miss Letty, you too! Great job♪”
Despite having taken down over 20 people, Ellie showed no signs of fatigue and smiled brightly.
Letty, too, was unfazed.
“Now then, let’s check the basement.”
With that, they headed down the stairs.
The basement held storage and cells, and there were usually very few people there.
Perhaps the guild members disliked the damp, unpleasant space, as all of them had been upstairs.
…However.
“Rita?”
“…Huh? G-Ghost? Why are you…? Did you come to save me?”
“…No, it’s just… a coincidence… I didn’t know you were captured…”
In one of the cells was a woman.
She looked to be in her early twenties, with short, neatly cut brown hair, large charming eyes, and a face with a certain sensual allure.
Her voluptuous, soft-looking body was clad in rags.
“Uh… Should I say I’m glad you’re alive?”
“Of course you should. What’s with the awkwardness? I’m fine. You know that, right?”
Given her condition, it wasn’t hard to imagine what had happened to her.
Letty frowned slightly, but Rita smiled at her.
But she couldn’t completely hide her exhaustion and weariness.
Rita was also an assassin.
Using her beauty and body, she would seduce men and complete her work during the night.
Due to such methods, she had an overwhelming amount of experience with sexual intercourse.
But this situation was undoubtedly different from that…
Letty’s concerned gaze stemmed from that understanding, but Rita smiled back, showing she understood.
“…Anyway, let’s get you out of there…”
Kneeling in front of the cell door, Letty skillfully used a wire from her waist pouch to pick the lock in no time.
“Thanks… Whoa…”
Rita, standing up and expressing her gratitude, wobbled on her feet.
Letty quickly moved to support her.
“As I thought… don’t push yourself…”
“Haha, sorry, sorry… it seems my legs gave out a bit…”
She muttered weakly, clearly overexerting herself.
Ellie approached them as they stepped out of the cell.
“Um, Miss Letty, who is this?”
…Was it just her imagination, or did Ellie’s voice seem slightly tense?
Hearing the voice, Rita finally noticed Ellie’s presence and looked up.
“Ghost, who’s this young lady? And why is she here?”
“Oh, um… I’ll explain…”
And so, they exchanged information once again.
Rita was greatly surprised by Ellie’s presence, but more importantly…
“…Did that really happen?”
“Yeah, I didn’t get a clear look, but I’m pretty sure.”
A piece of the puzzle that explained the strange feeling they had finally fell into place.
