Chapter 148: Knight of the Frozen Tundra
With Wulin temporarily removed from the battlefield, Wu Zhangkong returned his attention to his other students. Yuena seemed to struggle to do much of anything regarding the elements so she could be mostly ignored for the time being. Mu Xi was the clear distraction that intended to steal his attention away from Xie Xie but that didn't make her easily ignored.
Xie Xie was nowhere to be found as expected but would surely strike when the opportune moment arose and Xu Xiaoyan held her staff close almost as though in prayer. To Wu Zhangkong, the little girl everyone thought of as their own sister was the greatest challenge.
A single moment would be all that it would take for Xie Xie to defeat even somebody as strong as Wu Zhangkong and Xu Xiaoyan was the most likely to give the Jade Shadow that chance. If he wanted to win, he would have to defeat Xu Xiaoyan first.
"Don't get distracted now!" Flames burst to life once more, the frost that covered the world melting away in front of the heat of the Shining Sun. Her first, third, and fourth rings shone like the brightest stars as the temperature in the area suddenly rose dramatically.
Mu Xi's first ring is like a mini version of her fourth. It would enhance her capabilities and focus the light of the sun on her. Unlike her fourth ring, however, it didn't have the ability to grow stronger the brighter the sun shone.
Her third ring was also a supportive one. It condensed the rays of the sun and enhanced the creation speed and power of her flame control. Her fourth ring was the monstrous ability to grow stronger the brighter the sun was.
With all the supportive abilities combined, Mu Xi was as strong as Wu Zhangkong. The soul power cost was immense however and it was clear instantly that she couldn't hold it for long, her brow already covered in sweat.
The ability to activate two rings at once was already difficult and energy consuming. Three was something even Wu Zhangkong thought impossible for his absurdly talented students. After all, energy reserves didn't grow just because you were talented. That was one of the few things that required time and dedication alone to grow.
Frowning deeply, Wu Zhangkong was sure Mu Xi had equalized their cultivation through her fourth ring. He had lost that advantage which was unfortunate but they weren't the only ones stronger than their cultivation would allow.
"Don't die." Those chilling words left the Cold God's lips as his blade flashed, space itself torn in two and distorting as his blade swung through the air. Smirking cockily Mu Xi's hammer struck down at his blade, the distorted and twisting space flattening under the immense power of her forging hammer.
A small gap formed in between their weapons at the distorted and crushed space, a tiny black dot slowly filling the gap as the boundary between this world and the reverse world was breached. A massive explosion shot them both backward, the glowing rings floating around Mu Xi fading away as her martial soul was deactivated.
Appearing behind the unconscious Mu Xi, Xie Xie caught her before she copied their leader's actions and returned to the reverse world. All in all, it had only taken a mere moment, a moment in which Wu Zhangkong was skidding back from the explosion of space.
But that moment was more than long enough for Wu Zhangkong to attack, his sword intent shooting through the air toward Xie Xie unreservedly. Cutting through his student, the blade of sword intent sent blood flying through the air as his two student's eyes widened in horror.
Uncaring of the sight before him, Wu Zhangkong raised his blade just in time to block the Jade covered hand mere inches away from piercing his chest. His hand shot forward like a snake, wrapping around the scaled hand and pulling the rest of the Jade covered body out of the reverse world.
Wu Zhangkong felt his arm become weightless as he partially entered the reverse world, the smirk on his student making the hair on his arms stand at attention. Trapped between this world and the reverse world, Wu Zhangkong was unable to move for only a single moment before his blade would cut him free.
"Yahoo!" Cheering happily, the lighthearted voice of Xu Xiaoyan came from above Wu Zhangkong as a massive shadow descended at an unimaginable pace. To have escaped his spiritual sensing, it must have been thousands of meters into the air and yet it had fallen so quickly in the two or so seconds since Xu Xiaoyan disappeared from his senses?!
"Told you not to get distracted!" Laughing boisterously, Mu Xi's sixth ring glowed behind her. It was a domain type ability in which she could manipulate gravitational force freely. That made sense to Wu Zhangkong however he couldn't understand something else.
'How did Xu Xiaoyan gain another spirit soul?' Gazing upon his students falling atop the shoulders of a massive knight made of ice, a high ranking soul beast known as the Glacial Knight that could surpass its age like the Duskgold Dreadclaw Bear, Wu Zhangkong couldn't comprehend how she had done such a thing.
But even when his brain was racing at light speed, Wu Zhangkong's body moved automatically to destroy the danger. With Xie Xie holding his dominant hand in place it wouldn't be a particularly powerful strike but it would at least remove the threat from the sky.
Sparks flew in the air as his blade was stopped mid swing, a fist enshrouded in golden scales shakily holding his blade still. Looking at his student who had suddenly appeared, Wu Zhangkong released a sigh as he relaxed his body.
It was a clever plan, one that relied solely on his now incorrect knowledge of his student. In the past, Xu Xiaoyan had been a purely control type soul master who served as the opportunity maker for the group. Clearly, that was no longer the case. Or rather, she wasn't stuck in that role any longer.
Xie Xie took over that role this time, using the reverse world to lock him in place while Gu Yuena teleported the weakened Mu Xi and Xu Xiaoyan into the sky above his spiritual sense range. In the next half second or so, she teleported Wulin at his side to stop his strike.
It was a rough position to put the injured Silver Dragon Empress into as if her timing for teleporting any of them was off by even a second, he wouldn't have fallen for it. If she hadn't moved Wulin in place right when he was mid swing, an action lasting for less than a second, he would have used his sword intent instead. Yet, she did it. Their timing was nearly perfect.
As the massive Glacial Knight fell toward them, Wu Zhangkong couldn't help but smile faintly at their growth. Crashing down on him and his student, the earth shook as the Glacial Knight made its landing right atop him.
Wu Zhangkong had been defeated.

Hey there, hope you liked the chapter.
I bet you weren't expecting Xu Xiaoyan to be the one to deal the final blow, where you? I've left some hints back during when I showed what was going on with each member of Class 0 during the Eternal Sea arc but I'm curious how many of you got it. Leave a comment here if you were pretty much right and if you weren't right, what did you guess was going on?
