Dragon Knight Legacy

Chapter 05: Troubles of the Night

It was well past midnight and once more, Anna awoke from her sleep.

“Mama.” The little ginger-haired girl went on to shake her mother awake.

“Mhm? Anna? What’s the matter, dear?” Milka groggily questioned as she got up, taking her daughter into her arms.

Anna remained silent, her eyes filled with sadness and on the brink of tears as she gazed at her mother.

Milka sighed with a bit of a smile.

“Is this about Blaze again?”

Anna nodded.

“Oh sweety,” Milka began taking her daughter in for an embrace, “Listen, there's nothing to worry about, I’m sure they won’t be taking your big brother. You know how stubborn he can be.”

“But he was angry and didn’t even say goodnight,” Anna spoke, tears starting to fall.

“I’m sure he was just tired. Today has been especially difficult for him,” Milka said as she rubbed away the few tears, “How about this, just this once, I will let you go disturb your big brother as he is asleep. But don’t tell him I gave you permission to do so.” Milka said with a grin as she held up her finger in front of Anna’s lips.

“Really, yay!” Anna instantly cheered up. She immediately sent the covers flying and rushed down from the bed and in a matter of seconds, she was out of their room racing towards Blaze’s.

Reaching her big brother’s room, she found the door slightly open. A good sign which meant she didn’t have to worry about Blaze hearing her as she snuck inside. The creaking of those dastardly wooden doors always managed to blow her cover. Not to mention that Blaze had extremely acute senses, making it almost impossible for her to usually manage to sneak up on him.

“Big…!” She was about to throw herself onto Blaze’s bed when she noticed the dark figure, dimly illuminated by the moon’s light. Seeing the girl, the man quickly hid the weapon he was wielding behind his robe and turned to her.

“What are you doing in my big brother’s room?” Anna asked suspiciously. She didn’t however notice the man holding the weapon, but she merely had a personal grudge against the man.

“Oh, this girl,” Milka murmured as she too slowly made her way into Blaze’s room. She was stunned to find Blaze asleep, and Kalius standing in his large robe next to his bed.

“Sir Kalius, what a surprise. I didn’t expect to find you here so late.” Milka said a bit confused, pulling back Anna just to be safe, “Is everything alright?” She asked, trying her best not to let her suspicions show.

“Um yes, I was just…”

“I and the general were just having a chat. Well, that was until I decided to ignore him and go back to sleep. He, however, didn’t know how to take a hint and wouldn’t stop bothering me.” Blaze’s voice sounded startling Kalius greatly, but he tried his best to stay composed.

His body trembled a bit as he glanced to the side where Blaze was now starting to rise from the bed.

Was he awake the entire time?

Questions rumbled through Kalius’ head. From the earlier incident, he had generally surmised that Blaze was a relatively strong individual but now, he was having a bit of trouble figuring out just to what level his strength might be.

Milka sighed in relief, “Come on Blaze, please at least hear Sir Kalius out. He came out of his way to speak to you.”

“Fine, but just because you said so,” Blaze said as he got up from the bed and walked up to Anna.

He went and knelt in front of her to her and patted the little girl on the head.

“I’m sure you’re upset because I didn’t say goodnight. That’s why you’re here, right?” He smiled as he spoke to Anna.

The girl pouted and looked away making Blaze slightly smile. So he went up and kissed her on the forehead.

“Goodnight Anna, sweet dreams little angel. I promise we’ll play lots tomorrow.” He said making the girl turn to him slightly.

“Promise?” She asked her face began to light up.

“Promise.” Blaze nodded.

Finally, Anna beamed a smile and threw herself at Blaze, hugging him tightly. Once she was satisfied, she let him go and walked over to her mother.

“Come on Mama, I want to go sleep so tomorrow I can play with Big Brother all day!” She chirped at her mother who smiled greatly at that.

“Of course, sweety,” She said taking her hand, “Goodnight, Blaze, Sir Kalius.”

As they were leaving, she paused, turned back, and whispered to Blaze, “Thank you so much.”

Blaze nodded with a slight smile as the two left the room. The moment the door closed behind them. Blaze’s expression completely changed.

“So, Major General. How about we finish our little talk.” He turned to Kalius with a scary glare.

“I merely came to talk to you personally about coming…”

“No, I’m not talking about that,” Blaze cut him off, making Kalius frown, “do you take me for that sound of a sleeper?”

“I heard your little speech, quite unprofessional if I have to be honest” Blaze went on.

“That was nothing more than…”

“What are you after?” Blaze cut him off again, “Because if I had to guess, bringing me back to the capital might be more of the girl’s concern. Yours is something else. So, you personally, what are you after?”

Kalius remained quiet.

“I don’t answer to you brat!” He finally spoke with a spiteful look.

Blaze narrowed his brows and cracked his knuckles.

“Good. Makes my decisions a lot easier.”
