Chapter 10: chapter [10]
"I SOLD MY SOUL TO A DEVIL!"
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.
"Kaito, can you talk a little quieter? Your dad is sleeping," Miki's voice came muffled through the closed door.
Kaito immediately stopped talking, feeling a touch of embarrassment for disturbing the tranquility of the house. "Sorry, mom," he responded, trying to control the emotion in his voice.
From the other side of the door, Miki sighed, her concern evident. "It's okay, dear. Just... try to get some rest too, okay?"
"Yes, mom. I'll try," Kaito replied, his voice now calmer and more controlled.
He heard Miki walk away from the door, and a comforting silence took over the room. Kaito took a deep breath, trying to calm the internal storm of thoughts.
"That girl who made the deal with me... she's from my school. The most beautiful girl, Rias Gremory. Is she really a Devil? I need to go early to find out."
Determined, he got up from the bed and walked to the bedroom door, trying to make as little noise as possible. He slowly opened the door and peered through the hallway, making sure his parents were not around.
He walked to the bathroom, opened the door, and entered. He turned on the light and closed the door behind him, approaching the mirror above the sink. As he raised his head and looked at himself in the mirror, he froze, surprised.
The reflection in the mirror showed a Kaito he barely recognized. His skin was paler, almost ethereal, and his eyes glowed with an otherworldly intensity. His appearance was stunning, a nearly surreal beauty he had never possessed before. His features were more defined, his hair shone more than ever, and there was an aura around him that exuded power and mystery.
"Kaito," he murmured to himself, touching his face in the mirror, incredulous. "My parents will never believe it's me..."
Trying to compose himself, Kaito decided he needed to hide, at least until he could find out more about his new situation. He quickly did his hygiene, brushing his teeth and washing his face, though this did little to change the new reality of his appearance.
Returning to his room, he began searching for clothes that could help him hide his new look. He rummaged through the wardrobe until he found a large hood and a sweatshirt that had belonged to his father. He put on the clothes, making sure the hood covered his face well and the jacket hid his new slender figure.
With his face shaded by the hood and the loose clothes concealing his form, Kaito looked at himself in the mirror one last time to ensure he was sufficiently disguised. He looked more like a shadow than a boy, but that would serve his immediate purpose.
Kaito left the room and headed to the kitchen. The house was engulfed in silence, and he moved carefully to avoid making noise. Reaching the kitchen, he opened the refrigerator door and grabbed a bottle of water, taking a few sips to calm his mind and body.
After finishing the water, Kaito put the bottle back in the fridge and prepared to leave the house. He grabbed his keys and wallet, making sure he had everything he needed.
As Kaito left the house, still adjusting the hood over his head to ensure his face remained hidden, he was surprised by a familiar figure on the sidewalk. It was the same girl who had handed out the flyer earlier. She was standing under the dim light of a streetlamp, seeming to wait for him.
The girl smiled as she saw him, her eyes gleaming with a mix of curiosity and something else that Kaito couldn't decipher. "Kaito," she called softly, taking a step towards him.
Kaito stopped, a bit startled. "You... you were waiting for me?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady despite the nervousness.
"Yes, and no," the girl replied with an enigmatic smile. "My purpose was just to watch you, but since I saw you were leaving, I decided to show up. I am the familiar of young Miss Rias."
Kaito blinked, trying to process the information. "The familiar of Rias? So, you're not human?"
She shook her head, her brown hair swaying gently around her face. "No, I am a familiar. My true form is that of a bat, but I adopted this human form to interact with you. My name is Fiora."
"So, Rias really is a Devil," Kaito murmured to himself, more to confirm the new reality than to seek an answer.
Fiora nodded, watching him attentively. "Yes, she is. And you are now part of her Peerage."
"So, what do I do now?" he asked, looking to
Fiora for guidance.
"First, let's go to Miss Rias's house," said Fiora. "She is waiting for you. There, you will have all the answers and the support you need."
"Alright," he said, trying to convey more confidence than he actually felt. "Let's go to Rias's house."
Fiora smiled again and turned, beginning to walk down the sidewalk. Kaito followed her, adjusting the hood over his head as they walked. The streets were quiet, only the sound of their footsteps breaking the silence of the early morning.
In the distance, Kaito could see the large mansion rising imposingly.
Fiora led Kaito to the gates, which silently opened as they approached.
They passed through the well-kept garden and climbed the steps leading to the main entrance. Fiora knocked firmly on the door and, after a few seconds, the door was opened by a tall, elegant figure, Kiba Yuuto, who smiled at seeing Fiora and Kaito.
"Kaito Hyoudou," said Kiba, with a welcoming voice, "welcome to the Gremory house. Come in, Miss Rias is waiting for you."
Kaito, still a bit disconcerted by everything that had happened, took a deep breath and entered the Gremory mansion.
Upon entering the mansion, Kaito was immediately struck by the grandeur of the place.
Fiora and Kiba led him through a long, well-lit corridor to a large double door at the end.
Kiba pushed one of the doors open, revealing a spacious living room where Rias Gremory was seated on a leather sofa. She stood up as she saw Kaito enter, a welcoming smile on her lips, but with a serious and attentive look in her eyes.
"Kaito," Rias began, her voice calm but firm, "I'm glad you decided to come here. We have a lot to discuss."
Kaito nodded, removing his hood and revealing his new appearance.
