Echoes of Greatness: The Rise of a Global Football Sensation

Chapter 25: Rising to the Challenge

Five days later, in the evening, at the training ground of the Almere youth team.

In the second round of the amateur competition, Almere hosted NVC Naarden.

Naarden is a historic town in the Netherlands, situated in the province of North Holland, renowned for its impeccably preserved star-shaped fortifications, widely regarded as exemplary of European military architecture.

Having triumphed 3-2 away against AS'80 in the opening round, Almere exhibited assertive play on their home turf. From the outset, they launched relentless assaults in anticipation of overpowering their opponents.

In less than two minutes, Almere breached Naarden's defense on the right flank. Yang Yang delivered a precise cross, locating the number 11 striker, who soared majestically to head the ball into the left side of the net, eluding the goalkeeper's outstretched hand.

After taking the lead, Almere continued to dominate the Naarden defense, which struggled to contain Yang Yang's relentless attacks from the right flank.

Yang Yang operated freely on the right, systematically exploiting Naarden's left flank. Repeatedly spearheading the offensive, he consistently penetrated the opposition's defenses, contributing to his team's commanding 4-0 lead at halftime. Despite the evident disparity in strength between the two sides, Almere's morale remained buoyant like a rainbow, driving them to seek further goals in the second half.

At the final whistle, the score stood at 7-1 in favor of Almere, with Yang Yang scoring a goal and providing two assists. Once again, he was hailed as the team's standout performer, receiving praise and congratulations from head coach John Rep and Dick Vanpoer after the match.

Johnny Rep, a former right winger, personally discussed certain issues and mistakes with Yang Yang following the game. He highlighted Yang Yang's need to display more attacking aggression and encouraged him to cut inside the box more frequently.

Yang Yang acknowledged that his finishing lacked precision and admitted his first touch wasn't suitable for such runs, especially given the formidable defenses typically found in the penalty area. Aware of these vulnerabilities, he acknowledged the necessity to focus on making runs down the right flank and delivering crosses in the meantime.

Despite their differing perspectives, both men embraced each other's ideas. Johnny Rep leveraged Yang Yang's experience and offered numerous opinions and practical suggestions for his upcoming development plan, which Yang Yang deeply appreciated.

...

Yang Yang eventually departed from Almere for the Vecht River, also known as the Utrechtse Vecht, which winds through central Netherlands, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and historical importance that captivate Yang Yang.

One of the most renowned fortifications along the Vecht is Fort Uitermeer, dating back to the 17th century and integral to the Dutch Water Line. Initially constructed to manage water levels and defend the region, the fort underwent significant expansions and modifications in the 19th century to bolster its defensive capabilities. Fort Uitermeer stands today as a prominent historical landmark near the Vecht, drawing history enthusiasts and tourists fascinated by the military history of the Netherlands. Adjacent to Fort Uitermeer and along the Vecht, several yacht harbors and marinas provide docking facilities for boat owners, including those with yachts, to explore and appreciate the area.

Weesp, with a population of approximately 20,000 residents, boasts a vibrant sporting culture. In the southeast, there are hockey and rugby pitches, while the northern area features a stadium with tennis courts and five full-size football pitches.

In the third round of the amateur competition, Almere faced FC Weesp away at one of their home pitches.

The match took place in the evening, drawing local residents to the stadium. Cars filled the parking lot on the south side, while enthusiastic fans encircled the venue. Many families were seen bringing their children to witness the game.

Entering the third round of the amateur tournament, Weesp demonstrated a certain level of strength. They had evidently taken note of Almere's victories over AS'80 and Naarden, and for this game, they adopted a defensive counter-attacking strategy, focusing particularly on marking Yang Yang on the right wing.

Despite facing intense marking, Yang Yang remained highly active on the right flank. His exceptional physical endurance, combined with his tactical awareness and ability to exploit defensive gaps, posed a significant challenge to the Weesp defenders, who were considered inferior even to AS'80.

As Weesp concentrated on containing Yang Yang, their midfield naturally weakened, allowing Henk Dimer to pose an increased threat.

In the thirty-ninth minute, Yang Yang gained possession on the right, broke through their defense, and delivered a precise cross into the box. Positioned perfectly, the striker headed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

In the second half, Yang Yang switched sides and re-entered the fray with growing confidence. The players from Weesp were visibly tiring and struggled to contain Yang Yang, often left watching as he continued to surge down the right wing and deliver crosses into the box.

By the final whistle, the score stood at 5-0, securing another comfortable victory for Almere.

Yang Yang's presence drew significant defensive attention throughout the game, resulting in him tallying just two assists. However, this focused marking created additional space for Henk Dimer and the number 11 striker, enabling them to deliver standout performances.

...

In the fourth round of the amateur football competition, Almere hosted SC Franeker at home.

SC Franeker, hailing from Friesland, boasts formidable overall strength and has performed impressively throughout the tournament, notably eliminating FC Utrecht in the previous round.

Almere approached the match cautiously, mindful of Franeker's recent successes, especially their victory over Utrecht. However, fueled by their motivation and excitement following the win against Weesp, Almere were eager to face Franeker.

Having surprised fans with their consistent performances in the earlier rounds, Almere recognizes that the competition will only intensify as they progress. Potential matchups against top Dutch clubs like Ajax, AZ Alkmaar, and Feyenoord loom ahead, presenting a significant challenge but also offering invaluable experience.

As the competition advances, the growing attendance of fans increases the potential visibility to scouts from professional teams. A standout performance could attract the attention of these scouts, potentially paving the way for opportunities with professional clubs.

Playing away from home, SC Franeker appeared well-prepared for the game against Almere, known for their strong attacking prowess. Franeker opted for a defensive counter-attacking strategy, leveraging their solid defensive structure and rare defensive tenacity, attributes that had propelled them to this stage and enabled them to overcome opponents of higher caliber like Utrecht.

At the outset of the match, neither team managed to gain a discernible advantage. Almere continued to rely heavily on Yang Yang as their primary attacking outlet on the right flank. In midfield, Henk Dimer assumed the role of orchestrating their offensive maneuvers and probing for gaps in the defense, a strategy that had previously placed them among the top three attacking teams in the competition. However, this approach encountered significant resistance from SC Franeker.

Franeker's disciplined defense posed challenges for Almere, stifling their attempts to penetrate and limiting Yang Yang's opportunities to receive passes on the wings. As a result, Yang Yang often had to drop deeper to collect the ball, although this adjustment, while constructive, did not directly threaten Franeker's defensive line.

Henk Dimer, operating centrally, struggled to exert his usual influence and found himself consistently marked out of play by Franeker's defenders.

While SC Franeker focused more on their defensive solidity rather than their attacking prowess, both teams engaged in an intense battle with no breakthroughs, resulting in a goalless draw at halftime. This marked the first occasion in the competition that Almere had failed to score in the opening half.

In the second half, SC Franeker persisted with their defensive approach.

Yang Yang remained proactive on the right, tirelessly engaging with Franeker's left back and left midfielder. With limited support from his teammates, he resorted to exploiting his opponents' fatigue, relying on his running and movement to create gaps in their defense.

As the match progressed, both teams expended considerable energy with little to show in terms of goal-scoring opportunities.

In the 73rd minute, Yang Yang once again found space to receive a long ball from the center-back. Despite his immense stamina, the exertion throughout the match had taken its toll, affecting his first touch as he attempted to control the pass. This unexpected slip momentarily caught him off guard, but he quickly reacted, sprinting after the ball as it headed towards the left defender.

Franeker's left-back, startled by the sudden turn of events, instinctively rushed forward to intercept.

Both players sprinted at full speed from opposite directions, each vying for possession of the ball.

With determination etched on his face, Yang Yang pushed himself to the limit, disregarding his fatigue. He managed to reach the ball first, deftly poking it past the sliding left defender's challenge. Despite being nudged slightly off balance by the defender's contact, Yang Yang recovered after a couple of staggering steps and swiftly regained his composure, accelerating ahead to retrieve the ball.

Meanwhile, Franeker's left central defender had also reacted to the situation. Observing Yang Yang's lob over his teammate, he hesitated momentarily, unsure whether to close down the advancing player. It was this split-second hesitation that allowed Yang Yang to seize control of the ball.

After spotting Yang Yang catch up to the ball, the defender reacted instinctively, lunging to kick it away. However, Yang Yang swiftly executed a body feint, feigning a move towards the outer right and then accelerating sharply towards the inside.

Caught off guard by this sudden change of direction, Franeker's defender attempted to block but was left off balance, slipping on the turf in his effort to defend against Yang Yang.

Yang Yang's adept feint left the defender sprawled on the ground as he cut diagonally into the penalty area.

Franeker's right-back hurried to bolster their defense, but inside the penalty box, Yang Yang assumed full control. Faking a shot to deceive the defender, he deftly dribbled past with a right-footed maneuver, then threaded a precise pass into the center of the penalty area. The striker, positioned perfectly, calmly controlled the ball before curling it into the left corner of the net, eluding the goalkeeper who had anticipated a move towards the right.

Goooooaaaal!!!

1-0!

The entire stadium erupted in jubilation at this pivotal moment.

Yang Yang, having dribbled over 30 meters in the process, shook his head in amazement at the taxing sprint, before being engulfed by his ecstatic teammates on the pitch.

Once again, at a crucial juncture, Almere's right winger had rescued his team.
