Mikoto's breath hitched in her throat, her dark eyes widening in shock. The accusation was monumental, the implications of such a betrayal staggering. The Hokage was the protector, the pillar of their village. To think that the Third Hokage, the man she had respected and trusted, might have had a hand in the destruction of a whole clan was inconceivable.
But as the initial shock began to wear off, a grim realization settled in. Her own clan's massacre was still fresh in her memory, the pain and loss still raw in her heart. The Uchiha clan had been systematically eradicated, their history stained with blood and betrayal. And hadn't the Third Hokage allowed Danzo to orchestrate their demise? Her heart clenched at the parallel.
She swallowed, her gaze meeting Kai's. "Could it be... could it really be Hiruzen?" she murmured, her voice barely audible over the crashing waves. She knew of the dark side of the ninja world, of the sacrifices and betrayals that often marked their history, but this... this was something else.
Kai's gaze finally shifted from the vortex to Mikoto, his eyes seemingly void of emotion. "It's a possibility we cannot overlook," he responded, his voice steady. His eyes held hers, the weight of his words sinking into the silence that followed.
For a moment, Mikoto felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. The realization that her own kins' deaths might have been orchestrated by people she had once trusted, respected, was a blow to her psyche. The world she knew, the one she had believed in, felt tainted by a new layer of deception and corruption. The bitterness of the revelation left a sour taste in her mouth.
"You're suggesting that... the same person could be behind the Uzumaki and Uchiha massacres?" she asked, struggling to keep her voice steady.
Kai only nodded, his gaze once again drawn to the swirling vortex of water. "It seems likely," he said, his tone neutral. "But we need more evidence to confirm this."y.
"The world of shinobi isn't kind," Kai said after a long silence, his voice breaking through her thoughts. His gaze was still on the whirlpool, his eyes reflecting the same steely determination she had seen before. "It's a world of power struggles, hidden agendas, and dark secrets."
His words echoed in her mind, a harsh reminder of the reality they lived in. It was a brutal world, but it was their world. And as daunting as the path before them was, they had a duty to uncover the truth, no matter how bitter.
With a motion as natural as breathing, Kai swept Mikoto into his arms, initiating a princess carry. The unexpected shift in position caught her off guard, and for a moment, she was speechless, her dark eyes wide in surprise. But as she felt herself lifted off the ground, she quickly composed herself, a soft sigh escaping her lips as she relaxed into Kai's hold.
"Kai..." She began, only for her words to die in her throat as the sensation of floating filled her senses. She turned her head, her gaze darting to the sand beneath them, now retreating further and further away. It was a disorienting feeling, like being carried by an invisible current, and for a moment, Mikoto felt her breath hitch in her throat. But as her eyes met Kai's, she saw nothing but calm determination in his gaze, a stark contrast to the exhilarating sensation she was experiencing.
Her heart pounded in her chest, a mix of fear and exhilaration running through her veins. Despite her years of training and experience as a kunoichi, she had never encountered a technique like this. But this was Kai, a man who seemed to defy all conventions and expectations. With a sigh of resignation, she let herself relax into his hold, her eyes closing as she focused on steadying her breathing.
As they hovered above the whirlpool, Kai took in the view from their new vantage point. His eyes narrowed as he realized the land that seemed so near from the shore wasn't getting any closer. The illusion of proximity that had been woven so masterfully broke under his scrutinizing gaze, the realization sparking a frown on his face.
"There is no direct entrance," Kai mused aloud, his voice betraying his annoyance. "Even if I fly for years, I will never be able to reach the land."
Mikoto opened her eyes at his words, her gaze following his to the land that seemed to be a mere arm's reach away. The illusion was so compelling, so deceptively simple, that it was hard to believe they were not getting any closer.
"And here I thought it would be a straightforward journey," Mikoto remarked, a wry smile playing on her lips. Her voice was light, but her gaze was focused, the gravity of their situation not lost on her.
Kai's lips twitched in response, his gaze still fixed on the elusive land. "Seems like I need to figure out the matching seal for the whirlpool," he said, the challenge sparking a glint in his eyes.
"Matching seal?" Mikoto echoed, her brows furrowing in confusion. The concept was not foreign to her, but the application in this context was. "How would that work?"
"I presume that if I match the seal's frequency with my own chakra, it will allow us to traverse through the vortex safely," Kai elaborated, his tone thoughtful.
Mikoto blinked, her gaze shifting from the swirling waters to Kai. She knew of seals, had seen her fair share of them, but this was a whole new level of complexity. The fact that Kai seemed so unfazed, so confident in his ability to solve the riddle, only served to enhance her respect for him.
"Are you sure you can do this, Kai?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes were wide with a mix of fear and awe as she stared at him. She had seen many incredible things in her life, but this was on a whole new level.
"I can," Kai responded with certainty, the intense glint in his eyes never wavering. But after a pause, he added, "But I will leave you at the motel first. I am not 100% sure about it."
