Gardening Life With Plant Magic: Haku and the Spirits’ Botanical Garden

21: Edamame Controversy

As July drew to a close, the potato and cabbage harvest was successfully completed.

With the help of the villagers, we managed to harvest everything. We paid the villagers daily wages and distributed the harvest between the two villages and sold some to merchants. Some farmers even expressed interest in growing these crops in the coming years. That’s a good sign.

It looks like it’s almost time to harvest the melons. Thanks to the spirits taking care of them, they grew quickly and became large. The netted pattern is so perfect, it’s hard to believe they’re open-field grown! How much can we sell one for? These are super high-quality melons with the spirits’ seal of approval!

To check their growth, we cut up the melons and shared them with everyone. People here have probably never seen such large netted melons before.

“! What is this, delicious!?” Kyle shouted loudly and began eating with incredible speed.

“Kyle! Mind your manners!!” Grandpa scolded him, but Kyle didn’t pay any attention. Even Grandpa was eating voraciously. Must be in the blood?

Ren quietly ate quickly, while Riol ate elegantly. Riol, being at home, often eats produce from my garden, so there’s no need to rush. Father and I also enjoyed our portions calmly. Yes, it was delicious. Ho ho ho~

Maybe serving watermelon after melon wasn’t a good idea? The sweetness is different, so maybe I should have served them the other way around. My mistake.

But there was no need to worry. Everything disappeared as soon as it was served. Wow, amazing.

The watermelon was also juicy and sweet! They were medium-sized, perfect for a family to finish. Here, we can’t sell cut pieces, so it’s best to keep them manageable. Watermelon will be for general sale.

After dinner, we had early-harvested edamame and corn boiled for us. The kids hurriedly picked the edamame before dinner, and it was boiled immediately. Kyle complained while picking, but when he tasted the freshly boiled edamame, his eyes lit up with delight. It’s said that edamame should be harvested after the water boils. Hehe~

Adults had it with their evening drinks. Kids had it with honey lemon water. Hmm? Something seems off?

When I told Jeff that edamame goes well with slightly chilled ale, he grumbled about where I learned that but still prepared it eagerly. He poured a large glass, calling it a tasting, and sipped it thoughtfully, nodding in approval. I remember hearing that ale shouldn’t be too cold. Ideally, chilled lager beer is perfect for edamame, but we don’t have that here. And I can’t drink anyway!

We also had honey lemon water chilled for the kids. Jeff can use ice magic! How cool is that? I wonder if he can summon ice walls with a swoosh!

With the combination of ale and edamame, Father and Grandpa couldn’t stop. Did they drink all the ale we had at home?

Barton’s narrowed eyes are scary… Will there be a lecture tomorrow?

Needless to say, slightly chilled ale became a hit in our household after this.

The next day, Kyle, who had started preparing to return to school, asked me a favor. He wanted to take melons and Radberries.

“Haku! Please grant me the supreme fruits!” Kyle knelt before me and bowed his head.

Something strange must have clicked.

Ren, as if realizing something, followed Kyle’s lead. Seeing this, Father smiled broadly and nodded at me.

Well then.

“Ren is fine, but Kyle, you can’t tease me for fun, okay? Can you promise that?”

Kyle grimaced for a moment, saying, “Tch!”, but then nodded solemnly.

“From now on, I will reform myself and strive diligently.”

What kind of striving?

Everyone laughed out loud at this. Oh well, what a troublesome child.

“Both of you, bring out your magic bags. Do you have enough space? Aren’t they full of unnecessary stuff? If you can’t keep them organized, a cute wife won’t come your way!”

You’ll get a scary wife instead.

“Why is that!?”

Kyle immediately retorted to my dramatic sigh.

Alright, alright!

Hurry and bring them out!

Let’s see, what do you need? Radberries and white peaches, right? I’ll also give you melons and apples. Watermelons are big, but do you want them? Oh, you do. Then I’ll give you tomatoes and cucumbers too. If you eat them with a bit of salt, they’re super delicious! But don’t take too much salt.

What? Edamame too? We haven’t harvested it yet, so it’s not boiled, is that okay? You’ll have Jeff boil it? Make sure to thank him properly. In that case, I’ll give you some corn too.

Eat with gratitude.

Huh? Why are Grandpa and Father also in line?

Oh no! Wait!

Don’t pull out all the edamame plants in the field!! Half of them are for soybeans!

Edamame is just early-harvested soybeans!

Someone stop Kyle!?

“Waaah!! Kyle is bullying me!!”

I ended up crying loudly.

In the end, the edamame field was stripped bare, and the evil hand even reached the soybean field, but we managed to protect about two-thirds of it.

But you understand, right, Kyle?

You harvested all the edamame we were supposed to eat at home.

I won’t take responsibility if you get resented, okay?

After that, Kyle was beaten up and tied up. Not only by Grandpa but also by his own guard knights and even the household retainers who got involved in the confusion.

This is going to be bad if it gets found out, isn’t it?

And so, the frantic distribution somehow ended.

I’m really tired today.

So sleepy…

Zzz.
