Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Apep
"Yu! Wake up! Don't die on me!" Ei shouted anxiously.
When Makoto saw her sister carrying the unconscious man back to Tenshukaku, her heart was filled with shock.
"Ei? Did you… abduct him because you wanted to claim him for yourself?" Makoto asked, puzzled. As her elder sister, she knew very well how straightforward and stubborn Ei was. If Ei liked someone, it wasn't impossible that she might resort to force to keep him. However, upon seeing this man, Makoto wondered—had Ei's combat skills improved even further?
Ei's face instantly turned crimson with embarrassment.
"No! He fainted."
Yu had never expected that, despite being able to fight enemies for three days and nights without falling, he would be defeated by a mere snack!
Leaping upright from his deathbed, a dream of snacks led him to rise.
Yu suddenly jumped out of bed, hoisted the deep-sea dragon lizard he had captured onto his shoulders, and fled into the night.
Ei stood there in a daze, watching him leave.
"He… he left…"
"Well, you did try to harm him despite his good intentions in visiting you. Such a shame—he's quite a good man," Yae Miko said from the side, her voice dripping with mockery.
Ei contemplated whether she should take out her little tools.
Meanwhile, Yu pondered where he should place Little Blue's family when Zhongli arrived, bringing urgent news about his return to inherit his family's responsibilities.
That settled things—he would leave Little Blue's family in a pool.
"Goodbye, little Ganyu."
"Goodbye, Brother Yu. Come back and visit me."
"Xiao? You're out?"
"Yes, only I made it out."
"Then this task is yours now. I'm heading back. See you."
"Goodbye, Brother Yu."
---
Yu returned home to inherit his family's legacy. By the time he arrived, his mother was no longer there—in the spatial sense—but she had left him some messages.
First, both the rainforest and the desert belonged to him. Ahmar and I entrusted you with protecting the people until our return.
Second, keep an eye on the World Tree and make sure not to misuse it.
Yu was baffled.
"Misuse it? How exactly would I misuse it?"
He plucked a mushroom from a forest path, savoring its delightful taste. A mischievous thought crossed his mind—these were local delicacies. Perhaps he should send some to Ei. Wait, why was he thinking about her again? He had disliked her at first, especially since she had poisoned him. Forget it, he wouldn't dwell on her anymore.
Where had that Flower Goddess been buried? He pondered for a moment but dismissed the thought. Perhaps he would offer incense at her grave when he had the time.
For now, it was time for Yu to take on his new responsibilities as the ruler.
Sitting idly in the grand palace, Yu didn't really know what to do. A few days ago, upon his return, he had plowed through the lands near the oasis, devouring everything edible in sight. Now, aside from the people, there was practically nothing left.
The more Yu ate, the stronger he became. And the stronger he grew, the more he ate. After returning from Liyue, Yu felt like he could defeat his mother with a single slap—but he would never get the chance to fulfill that filial piety.
"Your Highness?" Alhaitham called out tentatively.
"Don't call me Your Highness. Just call me Overlord."
"Understood, Overlord."
"Any news?"
"Overlord, there's some unrest in the desert region. You may need to inspect it personally."
"Fine. I have nothing better to do anyway. Let's take a trip to the desert."
---
In the Desert
The desert residents gathered, having heard that their new ruler would be visiting. Crowds lined the road in anticipation.
"He's coming! He's here!"
A man with white hair, slightly large ears, and a gentle expression lay lazily atop a dragon-like blue creature, followed by a group of similar beasts. Behind him trailed a string of fierce wild beasts, tied up and subdued. Among them was a massive, bloodthirsty beast, its eyes gleaming menacingly.
Suddenly, a squad of well-trained soldiers armed with spears appeared and began executing the beasts one by one. Even the massive beast at the end was torn apart by deep-sea dragon lizards and vines without offering any resistance. The scene was gruesome.
"Why did you have them executed?" Alhaitham shouted from a high platform.
"Because they destroy fields and harm people. Killing them shows everyone that the Overlord has arrived. With the Overlord here, the desert will know peace. The Overlord is here, and the people will live in safety!"
---
On a distant rooftop
"Quite the domineering presence," muttered the High Priest, Old Dog-Head Hat, as he peered through an ancient King Deshret telescope, his son Little Dog-Head Hat beside him. They watched Yu, who was reclining arrogantly below.
"He's this fierce right upon entering the city. He won't be easy to deal with."
"We have to deal with him. We can't let King Deshret's legacy fall into the hands of this scoundrel!"
"But we can't beat him. Even his pets are stronger than us!"
"Don't worry. We have someone to back us up."
"Who?"
"Lord Apep, King Deshret's old ally."
"But Lord Apep's relationship with King Deshret was terrible. Are you sure he'll help us?"
"Relax. We'll bring Lord Apep into the mix and let them fight it out. Then we can reap the benefits."
"Father, that's brilliant!"
---
"Are you questioning me, you pickled lizard?" Yu sneered.
"Foolish godling, do you know who you're provoking? You dare challenge a dragon capable of destroying the world?"
"Destroy the world? You? I bet you'd get your skull smashed in the moment you stepped out. You disgust me, Apep. Cowering beneath the sands, fearing the light of the heavens—I despise you."
"You're different from Amun. At least Amun wasn't as arrogant and ignorant as you!"
"That's where you're wrong. I reserve humility and courtesy for those I cherish and respect. As for the likes of you? You'll get nothing but disdain and contempt."
"Hercules! You're courting death! You're nothing but a fleeting existence, relying on the heavens' favor to act high and mighty. I am the true master of this land!"
Hercules was Yu's divine name, bestowed upon him by the Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, symbolizing justice and strength. Though Yu had never mentioned it, Apep's words brought it up today.
"You and your outdated ideals should have become forgotten bones long ago. I'll give you one chance—submit to me, or I'll cut off your head and exterminate your offspring!"
"Never! Not even Amun could make me submit—let alone you, Hercules!"
Before the colossal dendro dragon, Yu's figure seemed insignificant, yet he stood fearlessly. Yu was never one to feel fear, knowing it served no purpose. The more daunting the challenge, the more he pressed forward.
---
In the distance
"Father, something feels off."
"Don't worry. At most, they'll fight it out—it won't affect us."
Just then, a deafening crash echoed, and a massive green object flew towards them, landing heavily with a resounding thud.
"Run!"
