Genshin Impact: Transmigrated as Furina's Second Personality

Chapter 24: The Revival of Faith

Five days passed in a flash.

In those five days, Fontaine had been thrown into utter chaos.

During the first three days of the month, Furina, egged on by Felina, launched thirty-five aerial objects—an average of about eleven per day.

Which meant that every day, the Opera Epiclese was holding eleven trials just to judge her.

At first, the public was bewildered, questioning why their Archon, of all people, would knowingly break the law and openly provoke the legal system. Was that how a god should behave?

But as the incidents piled up, the crowd's attitude began to shift, evolving from indignation to sheer entertainment. Each time the opera house opened, people knew they were in for another spectacle of Lady Furina's martial prowess.

While the public was thrilled, Fontaine's judiciary was at their wits' end.

None of the judges dared to actually try Furina, and the clerks were beyond frazzled from constantly recording her hearings.

As for the Champion Duelists, each day was one of sheer dread, terrified they might be the unlucky one chosen to duel against Furina or Felina.

And as for Neuvillette, his hands were so full that all he did from dawn to dusk was sit in the opera house and wait for her trial.

Three days of this wore everyone at the courthouse down to the bone.

Neuvillette, though entirely exasperated, tried several times to reason with Furina, but she remained completely unfazed, as if heeding him was the last thing on her mind.

Fortunately, the restriction on launching aerial objects only lasted three days, and everyone expected Furina and Felina to finally settle down.

But soon after that grace period expired, a guard from the enforcement division rushed into Neuvillette's office once again.

At this point, Neuvillette was practically developing a stress disorder; just seeing a guard enter his office made his head ache.

"Now what? Don't tell me Furina is launching balloons again? Isn't the restriction over now?"

"No, Lord Neuvillette, Lady Furina hasn't launched any aerial objects. However… she did attack our Gardemeks right in the middle of the street."

"So far, she's destroyed three units, and she said the same thing: 'I'm not paying a fine. Try me if you dare!'"

And so, the same cycle repeated:

Furina and Felina break the law—refuse to submit to a fine—request a duel—win the duel—are acquitted—and then resume breaking the law.

Two more days passed this way.

Including the first three days with the balloons, five days had now passed in total.

Within those five days, Furina had attempted every kind of offense that wouldn't actually harm anyone. The tribunal had handled a total of fifty-eight cases against Furina, but she requested a duel every single time and won, exempting herself from any punishment.

In these five days, the judiciary was tossed around like a spinning top.

All of the Champion Duelists, including Clorinde, faced Furina in battle at least twice each; Clorinde the most, with a total of eight duels against Furina.

Of the fifty-eight battles, neither Felina nor Furina lost a single one. Certainly, some of it was due to the agents holding back, but the greater reason was that the power of a god was simply overwhelming.

The entire judiciary was wracked with complaints, and even Clorinde herself could barely keep up with the relentless duels. Neuvillette, too, was entirely fed up.

Due to procedural requirements, even if the accused was acquitted through a duel, a judge had to be present. So, for the past five days, Neuvillette essentially lived at the opera house.

Seeing the mounting discontent among his staff and the growing murmurs among the public, Neuvillette was both helpless and frustrated. He couldn't fathom what Furina's intentions were, but he knew that for an Archon to trample on the law would inevitably lead to harmful consequences.

If this continued, the public would surely lose their respect for the rule of law.

Seeing that Furina still had no intention of stopping, Neuvillette reluctantly made a decision.

Today marked Furina's fifty-ninth trial.

This time, it was Felina who took control of the body to face Clorinde in battle. Unsurprisingly, Felina won.

"I hereby declare Lady Furina victorious in this duel. In accordance with Fontaine's laws, Lady Furina is acquitted."

Neuvillette's voice echoed from his judge's seat. However, unlike before, he did not rise to leave after delivering the verdict.

Instead, he continued, making an announcement before everyone in the opera house.

"In addition, I have an announcement for all present."

"Recently, I have observed that our Champion Duelists are somewhat lacking in numbers."

"Therefore, after deliberation, I now declare that effective immediately, I will personally assume the role of Champion Duelist."

"Considering the recent strain on our Champion Duelists, I will personally handle the next duel request."

Yes, Neuvillette had finally had enough.

Fontaine prided itself on justice and the rule of law, adhering strictly to procedure.

The right for a defendant to request a duel before trial was Fontaine's law.

In the game, Neuvillette only attacked Tartaglia after the Oratrice determined him guilty and Tartaglia caused a disturbance in the court. Neuvillette's response then had been within the rules.

But Neuvillette wasn't officially a Champion Duelist. The law prevented him from participating in duels requested by defendants, and as Chief Justice, he had to abide by the rules to retain his authority.

But now, to deal with Furina, Neuvillette decided to take on the role of Champion Duelist himself, a clear sign that he had been completely pushed to his limits by Felina and Furina.

The moment he announced this, the crowd burst into a buzz of astonishment.

"What? Lord Neuvillette is becoming a Champion Duelist?"

"Is this real?"

"But…is Lord Neuvillette even powerful? He's been the Chief Justice for five centuries, and I don't think I've ever heard of him actually fighting!"

"Who knows? But considering he's lived for five hundred years, he must be extraordinary!"

"So if Lady Furina keeps breaking the law, she'll either have to submit to the trial or fight Lord Neuvillette, right?"

"A fight between the Archon and the Chief Justice…how exciting!"

The audience was thrilled!

"What's this, Felina? Are we really going to fight Neuvillette?" Furina, on the other hand, was excited. The recent duels had honed her battle skills considerably. Though she was still nowhere near Felina's level, she could handle opponents with Visions fairly well.

Emboldened by her improvement, Furina was practically itching at the thought of facing Neuvillette.

"What do you think, Felina? Is he powerful? Can we beat him?"

Felina chuckled at her enthusiasm.

"You silly girl. Just because you've made a little progress, you think you're unstoppable, huh? If we could beat Neuvillette, Fontaine wouldn't even be in any crisis."

Felina wasn't downplaying their power. Although Neuvillette had not yet attained the full might of an ancient dragon, he was still the Hydro Dragon Sovereign—a formidable title. There wasn't a single dragon sovereign that could be considered weak.

Take Liyue's Geo Dragon King, Azhdaha, as an example: at his peak, not even Morax, reputed to be the strongest among the Seven, could handle him alone.

Only with the full powers of an ancient dragon could Neuvillette save Fontaine from the prophecy's impending disaster.

If Felina could overpower Neuvillette as he was now, her strength would already be at the level of the Hydro Dragon Sovereign in full, making the prophecy crisis a trivial matter.

But as things stood, even in her peak state as the Hydro Archon, Felina was still a ways off from matching the Dragon Sovereign.

"Then what should we do now?" Furina muttered.

"With Neuvillette willing to personally step in, it means we've just about reached the limit. If we keep stirring things up, we might really risk turning the people against us."

Felina replied, "After five days, we've more or less gotten used to our surge in strength. Let's bring things to an end here."

"Now it's your time to perform. Just follow the speech we prepared earlier."

"Got it!"

Furina nodded and looked out toward the audience, noticing that every pair of eyes was fixed directly on her.

It was clear that Neuvillette's announcement of assuming the role of Champion Duelist was directed at her. Everyone was eager to see how she would respond.

Under the gaze of the crowd, Furina cleared her throat, struck a signature theatrical pose, and, with a grandiose, raised tone, declared:

"Hahaha! My dear citizens!"

"From the look in your eyes, you seem to think that my recent actions were mere nonsense?"

This statement stirred a wave of murmurs from the crowd.

"What? So it wasn't just nonsense?"

"Could it be that Lady Furina had some deeper purpose behind her actions?"

Pleased by the audience's reaction, Furina nodded.

"Indeed, my actions these past few days were far from pointless!"

"Not long ago, we expelled the Fatui troops from our lands, yet Snezhnaya's ambitions toward Fontaine have not died."

"The Snezhnaya Harbingers number eleven, each one possessing great strength. The top four in particular wield power that rivals even the gods."

"Now, tell me, if one day a Harbinger as powerful as myself were to come to Fontaine and slaughter its people, then demanded a duel to evade judgment, what would we do?!"

"My godly sight sees clearly through this rule, revealing it as one that entirely serves the strong. Is it not unjust to ordinary citizens who abide by the law?"

"This rule allows the strong to trample over justice! The law should be impartial, yet this rule radiates unfairness!"

"I sought to correct this flaw, but this law has been passed down since the previous Hydro Archon's era. Changing it would not be easy, so I decided to violate it openly, to show the people of Fontaine the potential harm within!"

Furina's talent for performance and speech was astounding. Her words carried tremendous appeal, moving the audience deeply.

"So, Lady Furina's actions carried such meaning!"

"Using herself as an example—behind it lies a patriotic heart, a spirit of justice seeking fairness in the law!"

"This—this is what justice truly means to the God of Justice?"

"I used to question her actions, but now I see I was so blind!"

The crowd was abuzz with exclamations of admiration, and even the exhausted clerks and Champion Duelists from the court felt a sense of relief.

As Fontaine's superstar, Furina had an enormous fan base in the region. Over these past few days, her behavior had led to many questions, and her more fanatical supporters had been feeling rather conflicted.

With Furina's words now revealing her purpose, these fans felt a great weight lifted from their hearts, and some even teared up.

Seeing the audience's favorable response, Furina cleared her throat.

"However, this law is not without merit."

"The original purpose of this law was to protect human rights, to allow those accused to have a chance to defend their dignity. But as it stands, it is too easily exploited."

"Therefore, today, I will amend this law here and now."

"From this day forward, each successive Hydro Archon and Chief Justice of Fontaine will also serve as a Champion Duelist. Under special circumstances, they may step down to ensure the fairness and justice of the law in duels!"

Only those who had directly experienced the impact that Furina and Felina's actions had on Fontaine over the past few days could truly understand the significance of this amendment.

"OHHHH!!!"

"Lady Furina, long live!"

"She truly is the God of Justice!"

The opera house erupted with cheers as waves of praise flooded the hall.

At this moment, the faith of the people in Lady Furina reached an unimaginable level!

A tremendous surge of belief poured into Furina's body, merging entirely with Felina's divine spirit.

On the high platform, Neuvillette watched the scene, unsure how to feel.

His instincts told him that Furina's intentions likely weren't as pure as she made them seem. He believed that while she did have the resolve to correct the law, there was undoubtedly more to it.

But seeing how her explanation had won over the people and had, indeed, strengthened the structure of the law, he felt reassured.

The most important factor was that his initial intention in becoming a Champion Duelist was due to his concern that Furina's antics would undermine her position as Archon.

After all, no one would respect a ruler who abused their strength to flout the law, and a leader whose authority was called into question would inevitably weaken the country.

Yet now, he could see that not only had Furina's influence not suffered, but her actions had won her even more devotion from the people, thus consolidating her status.

With the turmoil resolved, the crowd dispersed.

As the opera house lights dimmed, the theater emptied, leaving only darkness and silence.

But within the Oratrice, a faint, steady sway revealed that Focalors' heart was not at ease.

Focalors had recently begun to feel conflicted.

Previously, her intentions had been clear.

The prophecy of Fontaine had been recorded on four stone tablets. The first two outlined the origins and sins of the people of Fontaine, while the latter two foretold the prophecy itself.

According to the engravings, one day the Hydro Archon would be judged by the people, after which the Primordial Sea would flood Fontaine, dissolving its citizens until only the Hydro Archon remained, sitting alone on her throne in sorrow.

Focalors needed to remain within the Oratrice, gathering faith in order to one day destroy the Hydro Archon's Dvine Throne and restore the Dragon Sovereign's power to Neuvillette. Only then would he have the strength to transform the people of Fontaine into true humans.

But prophecies are predetermined histories; the scenes on the stone tablets are destined to come to pass.

In other words, the future holds that the Hydro Archon will, without question, be judged by the people and will, inevitably, weep alone upon the throne.
