Chapter 311:  Chapter 311: The Debate Part 1

Meanwhile back in the states, Vicki Vale currently stood amidst a bustling crowd, her press badge from the Gotham Gazette giving her access to the front lines of a media frenzy.

The grand hall of the Capitol in Washington D.C, often a symbol of political power and stability, was now filled with the tension of a nation at war. Security was tight, with armed guards stationed at every entrance and military vehicles patrolling the perimeter. It was a necessary measure, given the current state of international affairs.

"Good evening, Gotham. This is Vicki Vale reporting live from Washington D.C., where the presidential debate between the incumbent President Pete Ross and the leading candidate Slade Wilson is about to commence. The Capitol has practically been turned into a fortress, with security measures in place due to the ongoing war that has gripped our nation. Despite the chaos outside, many experts argue that this debate represents a beacon of democracy, that even in tough times, our great nation still stands strong."

The hall Vicki spoke of was now blend of historic grandeur and modern technology. Inside, ornate chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting a warm glow over the polished wooden panels and marble columns. However, cameras were also strategically placed to capture every angle, and large screens ensured that even those in the farthest rows could witness the candidates' every expression. Reporters from various news outlets quickly settled into position, their cameras and microphones ready to capture the evening's proceedings.

"The atmosphere here is electric," Vicki continued, trying her best to sound audible in what was an incredibly loud atmosphere.

"Supporters of both candidates have filled the hall, their banners and slogans only adding to the very charged atmosphere here. The stakes could not be higher, with Slade Wilson leading the polls but facing serious allegations regarding his connections to Arias Markovic. On the other hand, President Ross has had his reputation suffer immensely these past few weeks, but polls still indicate that he still very much has a strong base of supporters."

As the lights dimmed, signaling the beginning of the debate, Vicki concluded her live report. "And now, as the nation watches, the debate is about to begin. Stay tuned as we bring you live updates from what promises to be a pivotal moment in our political history."

The host, a distinguished figure known for his impartiality, stepped up to the podium at the center of the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to tonight's presidential debate. Our first candidate, a man who has captivated the public with his promises of change and strength, please welcome Slade Wilson."

Slade Wilson, wearing a sharp suit that complemented his charming presence, walked to his podium amid a mixture of cheers and murmurs. His face though remained composed, despite the many controversies swirling around him.

"And now, the incumbent, a leader who has navigated the complexities of our current crisis with both support and criticism, President Pete Ross."

President Pete Ross, also known for his charismatic character but authoritative air, approached his podium. The crowd's reaction was similarly mixed, reflecting the clear divided opinions of the nation.

The host continued, "Tonight's debate will address the most pressing issues facing our nation, including the ongoing war and our domestic policies. Each candidate will have the opportunity to present their vision for the future and respond to questions from our panel of experts."

The host looked between the two candidates, ensuring they were ready before giving a slight nod. "We will begin with the opening statements from each candidate. President Ross, you may start."

President Pete Ross stepped forward, his face confident. "Good evening, my fellow Americans. As President, my vision for America centers around one primary goal: ensuring the safety and security of every citizen. In these uncertain times, our nation faces unprecedented threats, not only in both domestic and international but also extraterrestrial. My administration has worked tirelessly to strengthen our borders, enhance our defense capabilities, and provide the resources our law enforcement agencies need to keep our streets safe. Security is not just about military might but about creating a stable and secure environment for all Americans to thrive. Together, we can build a safer, stronger America."

The host nodded and turned to Slade Wilson. "Mr. Wilson, your opening statement."

Slade smirked and adjusted his tie as he stepped up to the podium. "Thank you. My vision for America is one of true equality and strength. President Ross speaks of security, but does he mean to exclude aliens from that vision? Will they not have rights under his government? Personally I think it's an absurd notion, especially considering he's already president, yet they still have little to no rights."

A murmur ran through the audience. President Ross, visibly unfazed, responded with a calm tone. "The body in charge of new laws, the National Legislative Council, is currently working out how best to integrate extraterrestrial beings into our society. It is a complex process that requires careful consideration. Mr. Wilson, your involvement with these groups seems more like a propaganda stunt to better your image rather than genuine advocacy."

Slade shifted to a small smile as he replied. "It's not my fault America loves me and wants a president who has actually fought for the country. Unlike you, hiding behind policies and committees, I have taken action."

President Ross chuckled, shaking his head. "Mr. Wilson, your military history is average at best. Moreover, you used your training to become a mercenary, killing people for money, including but not limited to citizens of America."

Slade showed confusion at the statement as if it was absolutely absurd. "I did that out of patriotism. My biggest client was the U.S. government, specifically under the operations of one Adam Waller."

There was a moment of stunned silence in the hall. President Ross took a breath, but his voice remained steady. "The FBI and CIA have made it clear that Adam Waller's private operations were not authorized by the government. We do not endorse such actions."

Slade seized this moment. "And yet, you had untrustworthy people like Waller in your government with control over powerful military assets and resources funded by tax payer money. This even made me believe I was doing a great service for America. Is this the kind of administration we want to continue?"

The host quickly intervened. "Gentlemen, let's return to the main topic. The next question pertains to domestic policies and how each of you plans to improve the lives of ordinary Americans. President Ross, you may begin."

President Ross nodded, grateful for the redirection. "Thank you. My administration has been focused on improving health-care, education, and job opportunities. We have made significant strides in these areas, and I plan to continue these efforts with more robust programs and funding to ensure every American has access to the resources they need."

Slade leaned in and immediately argued. "While President Ross speaks of improvements, the reality is that many Americans are still struggling. My plan is to cut unnecessary government spending and redirect those funds to support small businesses, improve infrastructure, and provide better support for veterans and their families. It's about putting the needs of the people first, not the bureaucracy."
