Chapter 106: Family Reflections
"Harry," Ted said when Harry and Tonks arrived for lunch later just as he and Andromeda set the table. "you've got a couple of letters from Hogwarts." He said as he placed them in front of seat.
"Oh, thanks." Harry said as he sat down.
"Wait a sec," Andromeda said before Harry could reach for the letters, she walked over to him and placed her hands on either side of his face. "now open your mouth and say 'ah'." She said.
"Ah." Harry said as he opened his mouth.
"Hmm, good, it's stuck on nice and properly." Andromeda commented.
"Mum," Tonks spoke. "Harry was wondering if it was alright to put a spell on the leaf so that food and drinks don't damage it."
"Hmm, temporarily should be fine." Andromeda said as she waved her wand and cast a spell over Harry's lead. "There, I'll remove it after you've eaten, we don't want to leave it on for too long, it could affect the transformation." She said just as Harry closed his mouth.
"Thank you." Harry smiled as he leaned up and kissed her cheek.
"You're welcome dear." Andromeda smiled brightly.
Ted watched the whole thing with a smile on his face, he knew his wife loved having Harry around, in fact so did he. Harry, say what you want about him, was a good kid, at least in the opinion of the Tonks family. Sometimes Ted felt like Harry acted older than his years, he could see a bit of Arcturus in the boy, but he liked the fact that Harry acted like a regular kid when it came to his wife and daughter.
Eventually Harry's birthday came, it was an enjoyable day with the Tonks family taking him out all day to celebrate and he received a lot of presents from all of his friends, he even received some chocolates from Draco. Harry had gotten Tonks and Jet to inspect the chocolates and both said that there was nothing wrong with them, that made Harry thoughtful, perhaps Malfoy senior had not told Draco what had happened between them, or maybe he had and Draco was simply just acting the part of a good friend, time would eventually show the truth.
But the good mood of the day didn't last long as the next day it was revealed in the daily prophet that the mass murder Sirius Black had escaped. That sent many people into a panic as Sirius Black not only betrayed to Potters to Voldemort (or you-know-who as the public called him) but he was also responsible for the deaths of many muggles and was considered to be you-know-who's right hand man. If that wasn't enough then add in the fact that he is the first and so far only person to have ever escaped from Azkaban prison, a supposedly unescapable place guarded by dementors which were basically soul sucking demons.
Ted never really knew Sirius Black beyond a few meetings and the man had seemed like a decent fellow during those meetings, but Ted didn't know him well enough to form any opinions on the man. The same could not be said for the female members of the family. Tonks had met Sirius a few times when she was a kid and had good memories of him, it had broke her heart when she heard that he had become a mass murderer and went to Azkaban. In fact that was a large reason behind why she wanted to become an auror, she wanted to stop people like Sirius from hurting others.
Andromeda probably knew Sirius the best out of all of the family, the two were cousins and got along well when they younger. Plus Andromeda was connected to Sirius in a way that she wasn't with the rest of the family, she and Sirius were the rebels of the family. While Andromeda had run off to marry a muggleborn, Sirius had been the one who dared to get sorted into Gryffindor and ran off to the Potters, if that was not enough then he had also sided with Albus Dumbledore during the war.
But now...now she knew that that was apparently an act, he was just trying to gain the light side's trust, or at least that was what everyone was saying. Andromeda hoped in her heart that everyone was wrong and that Sirius was innocent but she knew that someone like Sirius had to have had a trial, he was a member of the noble house of Black after all, so if he was found guilty then there must have been a reason for it. Even bribing people against Sirius wouldn't have affected the results of the trial to much when it was the current heir of the Black family on trial.
Harry on the other hand was conflicted on what to do about Sirius, on the one hand he wanted to go after him, punish the man who had betrayed Harry's parents, make him suffer for leading Voldemort to them. But on the other hand he recognized that Black was a dangerous wizard and if an auror caught him then Black would either go straight back to Azkaban for the rest of his miserable life or he would be subjected a dementor's kiss.
Dementors were gliding, wraithlike Dark creature, widely considered to be one of the foulest to inhabit the wizarding world. Dementors feed on human happiness and thus generate feelings of depression and despair in any person in close proximity to them. Their ultimate weapon was the dementor's kiss, the kiss would remove the soul from a person, leaving the victim as an empty shell, as good as dead.
Harry wanted to catch Sirius Black himself, but he knew it was better to just stay out of the way. With that being said, if Sirius Black happened to get in his way...well...Harry was sure that he'd be forgiven if Sirius ended up having to be carried away. Plus, the fact that Harry's was finally able to remove the mandrake a day later, meant that he was closer to his animagus transformation, that would be a nice surprise for Black.
