Chapter 24
The drama “[You Who Came from the Stars]” is set in the modern era, but the narrative of the two main characters begins several hundred years ago during the Joseon Dynasty.
At first glance, it seemed like a confusing script that made one tilt their head in disbelief.
However, the screenwriter of “[You Who Came from the Stars]“, Seo Eun-mi, added depth to the story by giving the male lead, “Park Do-jun,” the setting of immortality, while the female lead, “Han Yoo-hwa,” was given a backstory of having died young for some reason and then being reborn as a modern person.
Nevertheless, in Seo Eun-mi’s script, when Park Do-jun first met young Han Yoo-hwa several hundred years ago, and when he reunited with the reincarnated Han Yoo-hwa, she was still in her childhood, which meant that they needed a child actress who could portray both the childhood of Han Yoo-hwa from the Joseon era and her childhood as a modern person.
In other words, they needed a child actress who could look like Han Yoo-hwa while acting in both traditional hanbok and ordinary modern clothes.
The PD of “[You Who Came from the Stars]“, Hwang Min-soo, also knew that finding such a child actress wouldn’t be easy.
Still, he had no choice but to search for a child actress that matched Han Yoo-hwa regardless of the era.
“Well, I guess if we keep looking, we’ll find someone. It’s not like we only have one or two applicants,” he said.
“Phew… Finding a needle in a haystack would be easier than this,” he sighed.
Determined to think positively, he began reviewing the casting applications that were nearing three digits with casting director Jeon Sang-hyuk.
As they filtered through numerous applications, they finally called in the promising child actresses who had the looks and acting skills that warranted being judged with their own eyes at the audition.
Up to that point, the process was hardly different from when filming for other dramas took place.
The young actresses who earned the right to audition for the role of Han Yoo-hwa in front of Hwang Min-soo were all impressive talents.
However, Yu Seong-ah, the actress cast for Han Yoo-hwa, learned about the child auditions through a certain channel.
“Um, Seong-ah, are you going to keep wearing those sunglasses?” she asked.
“Yes. Is there a problem?” came the reply.
“No, it’s not that there’s a problem….”
It constantly bothered her that the young actresses were sitting right beside Hwang Min-soo, appearing intimidating enough to make them feel pressure.
After all, Yu Seong-ah was a top actress with a high-profile reputation.
No matter how talented the young actresses were, they had to concede at least one or two levels when faced with Yu Seong-ah.
Given this situation, she worried that the child actresses, stifled by Seong-ah’s presence, wouldn’t be able to perform properly.
Still, they couldn’t forcibly dismiss Yu Seong-ah since this audition was specifically to choose a child actress to portray Han Yoo-hwa’s childhood.
To be precise, while Han Yoo-hwa and Yu Seong-ah weren’t exactly identical from head to toe, they could be seen as somewhat similar in terms of personality and values.
“Director Hwang, after all, a person knows themselves best,” she pointed out.
‘Well, that’s true…’ he thought.
In the end, they began the audition without finding a valid excuse to remove Yu Seong-ah.
As expected, as soon as they opened the audition room door, the young actresses were taken aback by Yu Seong-ah’s presence.
Of course, wearing dark sunglasses, they didn’t meet her gaze directly.
Even so, the aura of Yu Seong-ah was so impressive that it made them feel small.
“I’m, I’m sorry. Let’s do it again—” one child actress stammered.
“No, you don’t have to do it again. Han Yoo-hwa isn’t a timid child like Yu-min,” Yu Seong-ah cut her off.
As the audition finally commenced, Yu Seong-ah’s strict attitude didn’t allow even the smallest mistakes.
This was a form of obstruction like no other.
Ultimately, Hwang Min-soo didn’t raise any objections since the young actress just didn’t quite match well with the role of Han Yoo-hwa in his eyes.
Regardless of how well they scored on paper, if they faltered in practice, that was it.
It would be unthinkable to disregard the opinion of a lead actress like Yu Seong-ah when selecting a child actress.
Thus, Yu Seong-ah’s thorough evaluations continued, and only after narrowing down a handful of child actresses who performed satisfactorily in her eyes did the audition finally come to an end.
“Each of the four of them is a child actress with experience in lead roles, that’s probably why their acting levels are on a different scale compared to the others,” Hwang Min-soo noted.
He praised the two young actresses who convincingly performed a fall in a completely empty audition room.
It was a bit odd that the two seemed to have similar acting styles.
Nonetheless, a final audition was needed for the final decision.
They had already selected a scene that was nearly a highlight among various scenes from “[You Who Came from the Stars].”
“Long time no see, Director Hwang,” said one of the participants.
“Hmm, why does Yoon-sung seem to get younger every time I see him? Are you really immortal?” Hwang Min-soo joked.
“Haha. I’ll take that as a compliment,” Yoon-sung replied.
As time passed, the long-awaited final audition day arrived, along with the actor for Park Do-jun, Ha Yoon-sung.
The reason he was called was that the character who would resonate best with his acting would soon be the child actress playing Han Yoo-hwa.
Shortly after, as Yoon-sung’s costume changed into the attire of a Joseon scholar, the young actresses’ costumes also shifted to match the graceful style of Joseon noble girls.
“…This time, Lee Ha-eun, you go first,” said one of the selected young actresses.
“Huh? Why?”
“Well, if I go first again, you’ll just copy me… I mean, this way it’s fair,” she said.
I witnessed the two highly regarded young actresses among the four selected for the final audition whispering to each other.
Is this what ‘birds of a feather flock together’ means?
Both had exceptional looks, giving the impression that they were indeed noble girls from the Joseon era enjoying a conversation.
At the same time, I felt a brief assurance that if those two were to stand before the camera, they could display an aura similar to Yu Seong-ah’s.
Soon enough, the moment came when preparations for the final audition were complete.
“Um, Director Hwang. Can I perform first?” Ha-eun spoke up, echoing a conversation Hwang Min-soo had overheard just moments earlier.
Of course, it was Hwang Min-soo himself who suggested that those who were prepared first should audition, but in ordinary circumstances, wanting to audition first in a competitive setting would naturally be daunting.
However, someone stepping forward to volunteer for it indicated a certain level of confidence or perhaps an eagerness to dive headfirst into it.
Hwang Min-soo personally hoped it was the former as he positioned Ha-eun right in front of Ha Yoon-sung.
After asking both Ha-eun and Ha Yoon-sung if they were ready, he declared, “Hmm, it seems you’re both ready, so… 3, 2, 1… action!”
He called for them to begin acting out a scene that showcased Han Yoo-hwa’s unique character traits.
Almost simultaneously, Ha Yoon-sung directed his gentle voice towards Ha-eun.
“Dear miss, what is it you are so intently gazing at?”
At that moment, Han Yoo-hwa’s eyes widen at the sudden appearance of Park Do-jun, who showed up quietly without making a sound.
However, since she had gradually gotten used to these sudden appearances in her days spent with Park Do-jun, she slowly turned her head towards him.
A hint of joy mixed with underlying turmoil seeped into her voice as she responded.
“They will soon no longer be flowers, my lord.”
Currently, Han Yoo-hwa was in a situation where a politically motivated marriage with the old Kim Pan-seo was being arranged.
At an age where she was just beginning to realize the vast world, sadly, she would soon be trapped in the narrow life that Kim Pan-seo embodied.
“With such ease, I wonder how it is that you’ve made these flowers bloom… I cannot possibly understand, my lord,” she lamented, softly stepping on a poor flower while yearning over her grim situation.
Soon, a bittersweet smile bloomed on her youthful face as she glanced at Park Do-jun.
“You have said, my lord, that it is the moments that linger that leave memories behind. However, what remains at my feet… are merely trampled petals.”
Indeed, the days spent with Park Do-jun were enjoyable moments for Han Yoo-hwa.
However, reflecting on Park Do-jun’s hints of an impending separation and her own fate of becoming the wife of a man who was like a father to her made her feel that all those past joys were utterly meaningless.
“What are memories? What are reminiscences? What exactly are they…?”
With her eyes slowly reddening, she deliberately directed her gaze towards Park Do-jun.
Even so, she was just a young girl yet to become accustomed to hardships.
To say it was childish was indeed to call it that.
To resent it would be to label it as such too.
However, the tranquil voice that came from Park Do-jun was a turning point.
“If you dislike marrying into a powerful family so much, then come with me down another path. Of course, it would not quite suit your lovely flower shoes…”
For Han Yoo-hwa, this was a proposal of a future she had never even dared to imagine.
At the same time, it was as if the flowers that had once been trampled by the past Han Yoo-hwa revived once more under some invisible force from Park Do-jun.
“Wouldn’t it be better than scattering regrets and nostalgia across the path you’ve walked?”
The glistening, watery eyes of Han Yoo-hwa began to quiver slightly.
Just then, Park Do-jun slowly extended his hand towards Han Yoo-hwa.
“I shall tell you again and again, my dear, why foolish flowers keep blooming.”
As Han Yoo-hwa’s delicate fingers began to entwine with the tips of Park Do-jun’s fingers, the two hands of different sizes and appearances finally interlocked completely.
“Cut! Cut! Wow, this could work as it is!”
Hwang Min-soo’s satisfied voice filled the vast audition room.
