Chapter 40
Don’t Stop People.
The flagship variety show of UBS scheduled on Sunday evening, known as the so-called “golden time.”
Since it’s composed of regular members, actors, singers, comedians, and various other broadcasters…
And the guests are all selected from famous celebrities,
No other program could surpass Don’t Stop People in terms of buzz.
The viewership ratings were certainly not low.
However, the main plot, [Name Tag Tag], along with other plots, mainly involved “physical activities,”
So it was common for both regular members and guests to end up getting a little messed up.
If you think about it, those embarrassing moments also contributed to Don’t Stop People’s popularity.
It was undeniable that the charm of idols or actors showing their humanity while taking on tough missions was a major factor in making people watch Don’t Stop People.
Still…
“Isn’t making even elementary school kids play tag a bit much, Su-hyuk?”
Regardless of how important the ratings were, there had to be some limits.
As a fixed member and MC, Seong Yu-seok expressed his concerns about the broadcast script that PD Choi Su-hyuk showed a moment ago.
“I think it would be better to let participants act as judges instead.”
“You and the other members aren’t going to go all out against Haeun, right? Haeun won’t even find out where she’s hiding until the final moments of the recording, so I doubt the situation you’re worried about will happen.”
This was when PD Choi Su-hyuk mentioned another advantage considering Haeun was only 12 years old.
He added that they had removed as many elements as possible that might trouble Haeun during the Don’t Stop People recording process.
“Okay, I get it. Su-hyuk, you must have your reasons. But I can’t shake the feeling that Haeun might feel pressured about tag.”
“Hyung, well… to be honest, Haeun wanted to participate in tag. She said it sounded super fun.”
“What…? Really?”
“Would I lie to you?”
Up until this moment, everything PD Choi Su-hyuk had said was clearly for Haeun’s personal request as well as her safety, showing the best approach.
With that, Seong Yu-seok reluctantly got persuaded.
In any case, the more screen time for Haeun, the better.
It was Haeun who brought the show, Your Star from Afar, to soar high into the sky right from the first episode.
Just how many new viewers would tune in to Don’t Stop People upon hearing that Haeun would be appearing was still anyone’s guess.
From UBS’s perspective, they would want to draw in as many of those unknown viewers as they could through this opportunity.
This was something seasoned broadcasters like Seong Yu-seok couldn’t possibly overlook.
As a result, Seong Yu-seok, being the MC of Don’t Stop People, also had to do his best to give Haeun as much screen time as possible.
The problem was Haeun’s young age.
‘…Heon-yeol needs to step up and support her.’
No matter how much PD Choi Su-hyuk prepared child-friendly missions for Haeun, they surely wouldn’t just end up going through missions from start to finish.
There would be quite a bit of talk between the guest Haeun and the fixed members of Don’t Stop People.
Other stars who had appeared on Don’t Stop People were able to proceed smoothly with the recording, thanks to their unique stories and experiences.
However, whether Haeun, being only 12 years old, could show the same eloquence or sparkling wit was uncertain.
Fortunately, it seemed that she had been friends with Lee Geon-yeol, one of the fixed members of Don’t Stop People, for quite a long time.
So, rather than leaving everything to Haeun, it would likely be better for Lee Geon-yeol to share episodes involving her.
As time passed by,
Finally, on the day of the recording for [Don’t Stop People: Your Star from Afar Special], Seong Yu-seok was currently…
“How come this funny face isn’t hidden even when wearing a hat?”
“…That’s something you keep to yourself, Miseon…”
Seong Yu-seok was waiting for the other fixed members and Haeun to arrive, overhearing an unexpected roast from his coordinator.
But soon enough, as the members trickled in, he heard similar teasing remarks again which made him retort.
“Hey, why is it just me being roasted? Don’t you think you’re any different?”
Half-jokingly, the other members argued that they were no better.
“Come on… still better than you!”
“If I had a funnier face than my brother, I wouldn’t be a singer but a comedian, would I?”
Almost simultaneously, the fact bombs from all directions forced him to shut his mouth once more.
Then, a familiar face, along with a new face, appeared in the waiting room shortly after.
“All you commoners, back off~! The most beautiful Han Yoo-hwa is here!”
-Pinch.
“Ouch! I-I’m sorry, Haeun! Uncle made a mistake!!”
In less than a second, Lee Geon-yeol collapsed to the floor, clutching his left side.
Only then did Haeun slowly bow and politely greet Seong Yu-seok and the members of Don’t Stop People, a sight that was quite impressive.
Of course, whether it was good or bad would remain to be seen.
“It feels like just yesterday when I last saw you, neighbor uncle. You’ve really grown up beautifully!”
“Oh, if Se-young thinks you’re pretty, then you must be really pretty.”
“Hey, Haeun. Can you take a picture with uncle a bit later? Your uncle’s mom is your biggest fan.”
At least all the members welcomed Haeun, so Seong Yu-seok thought that the first button was fastened rather well.
Afterward, Haeun was guided to the makeup room, changing into a hanbok just like Seong Yu-seok and the other members, and she looked like the embodiment of grace.
Of course, he thought that if he expressed that out loud, he might experience Haeun’s electrifying touch like Lee Geon-yeol did previously, so he kept quiet.
“Han Yoo-hwa.”
“Han Yoo-hwa, right.”
“Han Yoo-hwa!”
The other members, all wide-eyed at Haeun’s beautiful hanbok, didn’t bother to hide their admiration.
To Seong Yu-seok, Haeun’s appearance could very well be the very essence of the character she played in Your Star from Afar.
However, after setting up a brief conversation for the recording that was about to start,
He went through several questions to confirm with Haeun that he might use during their talk.
“Then, can I ask about Haeun’s acting?”
“My acting…? What about it?”
“Well, mostly what you think about while acting. Or maybe Haeun’s own acting tips?”
While Haeun had answered that she didn’t mind questions about family or hobbies, her expression stiffened at the thought of questions about her acting.
“U-um… I won’t pry too much. Just a simple way you get immersed in your role will do.”
Haeun, who had gained attention for her impressive acting skills, showing unusual reluctance to answer questions about it left him puzzled.
Actors who had been guests on Don’t Stop People in the past were never shy about giving long speeches about their performances.
‘Well… this kid probably has her reasons.’
In any case, questions that might put a guest in an awkward position shouldn’t come from the MC, so he decided to focus on the types of questions Haeun said she wouldn’t mind.
As he continued to share things he ought to inform Haeun about, they soon realized that there were less than ten minutes left until the recording began.
With Geon-yeol and the other members putting on their microphones and preparing for the shoot, Seong Yu-seok was about to do the same.
However, not long after, Haeun, opening her mouth hesitantly, said,
“Um, Uncle Yu-seok. Can I ask just one thing?”
“Oh, of course. Feel free to ask anything you’re curious about regarding the shooting.”
“It’s not about the filming, but something a bit personal… Is that okay?”
“Uhmm… just go ahead and say it.”
As she requested just a little more time,
Eventually, the question from Haeun was the type of inquiry Seong Yu-seok hadn’t expected.
“Since you became famous, do people recognize you at places like cafes or supermarkets?”
“I guess that tends to happen…”
“Then, isn’t that burdensome? Honestly, I can’t imagine it would be comfortable.”
Seong Yu-seok still didn’t grasp what Haeun meant by her question.
However, the fact that she went out of her way to make a request for time before delivering her question hinted it wasn’t just a casual inquiry.
“Well, those kinds of interests are sort of a responsibility for the fame I enjoy. Of course, it’s inconvenient compared to when I was ordinary, but I try to bear whatever I can handle.”
He returned answers devoid of any playfulness.
Haeun, appearing to ponder for a moment, eventually expressed her gratitude for the good advice, which made Seong Yu-seok wish for her concerns to resolve well.
Finally, the standby signal from PD Choi Su-hyuk reached both Seong Yu-seok and Haeun.
Just a few seconds later, as filming began…
“Alright, thank you for waiting! Today’s special guest is Haeun Lee!”
As the MC of Don’t Stop People, he genuinely welcomed guest Haeun.
And until that point, he couldn’t have predicted or even imagined Haeun’s upcoming exploits.
