Honkai Star Rail: I must live a peaceful life

Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Tom and Cat - A Rather Fitting Pair of Words

"Miss Jessica..." The convoy drove through the wilderness. Inside the safest vehicle in the middle, Peggy, the person in charge, held her forehead helplessly as she watched the figure sitting quietly like a sculpture in the back seat. Her voice was filled with concern. "Are you sure it's alright to make such casual arrangements?"

"Why do you say that?" asked the young woman in a white dress from the back seat, her voice as gentle and melodious as ever.

"It's just... a feeling, I suppose?" Peggy's tone was hesitant, clearly aware that her reasoning wasn't very convincing.

She carefully observed Milo, this person picked up by their employer. He had a very youthful face, looking about the same age as her brother. His appearance could be called handsome, with an elegant demeanor mixed with a hint of mischievous wit that wasn't annoying. Perhaps because he had been called up from sleep, his eyes remained half-closed with a somewhat drowsy, dreamy look.

Though in different ways, both this stranger and Miss Jessica were the type of people who wouldn't be seen as enemies at first glance.

If it were just this, she wouldn't have spoken out against it directly, but this gentleman's clothing was a major concern.

The stranger wore a somewhat damaged black coat, not only was its style exquisite, but it fit him particularly well, clearly a high-end custom-made product.

Moreover, Peggy keenly noticed something else - despite having been lying on the ground earlier, he hadn't made any gesture to dust himself off when Miss Jessica helped him up, yet both the car interior and his clothes remained as pristine as if they had never been touched by dust.

This wasn't the effect of some anti-dust formation, but rather an inherent property of the material, as the alchemical formations inscribed on his clothing were clearly in a damaged state.

"This gentleman might be quite dangerous," Peggy warned softly. Even knowing this was no different from questioning him directly, she still instinctively lowered her voice to convey her seriousness. "He's likely among the stronger ones even among Bonfire-level transcendents."

"It's alright," Miss Jessica shook her head with a gentle laugh. "My revelation tells me that helping Mr. Tom won't bring us any harm."

"Well, you're always right." Peggy shook her head and stopped pursuing the matter. If it weren't for this, they wouldn't have turned and stopped the car earlier.

Still, her worries made her unconsciously fret over some minor issues. "Speaking of which, we're a legitimate freight company. While you can come aboard with the boss's special permission, this gentleman would be rather difficult to explain in the report."

Peggy gestured at her deep green uniform.

Outsiders were always unwelcome among these transporters.

"That's not a problem at all," Miss Jessica smiled with a relaxed tone. "We can just classify Mr. Tom as cargo, can't we?"

"Eh...?" Peggy was a bit stunned, mainly because she instinctively didn't expect Miss Jessica to choose deception so easily.

But thinking about it carefully, was there really anything wrong with that?

"This isn't a bad thing, why not?" Miss Jessica tilted her head at Peggy, looking very cute.

She smiled with her eyes curved. "Now, let's discuss what kind of identity we should choose for Mr. Tom."

Peggy instinctively looked toward the young stranger.

"Ah yes, we should indeed consider Mr. Tom's thoughts on this," Miss Jessica nodded, then turned to look at the stranger she had picked up, speaking cheerfully.

"So, Mr. Tom, would you like to participate in this? Or do you already have something in mind?"

"Ah, please decide as you wish," Tom briefly awoke from his drowsy state to answer the question, very generously giving up his right to his temporary title.

"Then I'll choose to abstain," Peggy slumped exhaustedly in her seat. You two complicated non-hostile characters can play by yourselves, just don't drag me into it. I'm just a regular working class person, not qualified to participate in such high-level affairs.

"Then I'll be the only one making the decision~" Miss Jessica's tone was very light. "How do you two feel about 'stray cat'?"

"Cat..." Tom the cat? Peggy's mouth twitched, feeling embarrassed by Miss Jessica's idea, and didn't you say we could call you Jerry before? "Well, I have no objections."

But would this gentleman really agree? Peggy had her doubts.

"So what do you think, Mr. Tom?" Miss Jessica asked. "If you're not willing, I can have Peggy list you under temporary order cargo instead."

Having been away from the chaotic zone for two or three years and unaware of recent popular works, Milo didn't catch the reference here, interpreting this symbolic title as a literal metaphor.

A stray cat? He did rather fit that description. Milo glanced at the somewhat nervous Peggy and smiled.

He didn't really mind this title. After all, even the ancient sage could smile and say "exactly right" when called a stray dog, so he wouldn't be irritated by something like this.

Besides, getting defensive would mean being rattled, and this wasn't enough to make him lose his composure.

"Ah, it's nothing, please proceed as you wish. I don't mind these things," Milo smiled gently.

"Really?" Miss Jessica was also somewhat surprised. She had originally planned to propose a less acceptable idea first, to pave the way for a compromise later.

"Really." Milo nodded with his eyes closed. He truly seemed indifferent to these matters.

However, his brief, flat voice, which sounded somewhat low due to his indifference, caused others to misunderstand.

"Ah, if it's because of me, you don't need to change your mind. After all, even without my help, you could safely complete this journey," Miss Jessica said. "And using temporary mail delivery wouldn't be troublesome for us either."

Miss Jessica tried to persuade Tom to change his mind. She actually didn't support this idea much herself, after all, she had said they could call her Jerry before. If only Milo himself had taken on the identity of Tom Cat, she wouldn't have minded, but now as a close contact, if he accepted this identity, her image would definitely be directly associated with being a mouse.

That kind of comedic image was really unnecessary.

But the stranger from another land, unaware of this reference, didn't grasp her intentions.

"It's fine, I really don't mind these things." Is it because my tone made people misunderstand? Milo came to this conclusion, as he had often encountered such situations before.

However, without those habitual recognition labels now, he could still change these misunderstandings.

After some thought, Milo spoke softly, his voice carrying the lazy softness of someone who had just woken up due to drowsiness.

"Meow~"
