Chapter 44: We're Not Going Anywhere
Shu leaned against the corner, silently watching the dust motes dance in the single ray of sunlight that peeked through a crack in the small window.
Everything that happened before was like a vivid dream, so real that every bit of pain, every step he took, every drop of blood, every word he heard was still so clear, still echoing in his ears.
Or was this… the dream?
As the ray of light slowly moved, finally shining on Kiana's face, causing her to frown, Shu subconsciously raised his hand, wanting to block the sunlight.
The jacket that had been covering him slid off. The small noise was just enough to wake Shu from his daze.
Shu blinked, quickly picking up Kiana's jacket. The orange and white pattern was an eyesore to him.
He shook his head, rolled up his sleeve, revealing the place where he had been injured. After carefully examining it, he pulled his sleeve back down.
"Phew…" Holding Kiana's jacket, Shu leaned against the wall, his mind replaying the events that happened.
Let's go through it, starting with the "present", to predict what will happen.
First, he would leave with Fu Hua and the others, to find medicine to treat their wounds. Then, according to Mei, around noon, Mei and Bronya would reach here, missing them.
Meanwhile, they would find a large number of medicines in the ruins of the infirmary. After treating their wounds, they would leave the academy and find Himeko and Theresa in a nearby convenience store.
Then, on the next night, they would be attacked by a Honkai beast and be rescued by Kallen and Otto…
Shu frowned, analyzing the timeline of each event.
In the morning, they would leave here. Then, around noon, they would find the medicine, and Mei would arrive, while Theresa and Himeko would arrive at the convenience store. These three events would happen around the same time, and they could only achieve one of them.
And the whereabouts of Otto and Kallen were even harder to figure out. The only information Shu had was that they'd been following Honkai beasts for the past few days. Otherwise, Otto wouldn't have been able to mention that he'd been observing them.
That means the next night, they would only be attacked and be rescued by Otto. It was very likely that both of these events would have to be linked, and Shu had a headache thinking about it.
He could just not go look for Otto. It was Otto, after all! While everyone was trying their best to avoid the Honkai Beasts, only Otto was running around following them.
But despite his reluctance, they needed Otto's wisdom and Kallen's strength.
If Kallen was the one looking for Mei in the alley, then none of those things would've happened.
Thinking about it, it seemed that every choice he made had been a grave mistake. He should've insisted on leaving in the morning. He should've come up with a better plan with Kiana in that moment. And his analysis almost made him lose a piece of his arm…
Shu really needed someone who could make decisions for him, he hated making any form of choices.
"Ugh…" At that moment, Kiana, who couldn't bear the sunlight, groaned and rolled around before sitting up, her eyes still heavy with sleep.
"Huh? Shu... Good morning..." Kiana rubbed her eyes. A bit of drool was at the corner of her mouth, sparkling in the sunlight.
Shu looked up and saw Kiana still hadn't opened her eyes, yet she could still greet him accurately.
"Good morning." It looks like she slept well last night… Shu responded and continued thinking.
Kiana continued rubbing her eyes for a long time. Just like a siege, after a long period of struggle, were her eyelids finally open.
"Uh..." The first thing Kiana did when she opened her eyes was to look for food. After a glance around, Kiana realized that she couldn't bite through concrete, so she could only look at Shu. "Uh… Huh?"
Kiana's eyes gradually widened, and she frowned at Shu, "Uh… Shu… Are you cold?"
Shu: "Huh?"
Shu blinked, puzzled, and looked at Kiana. That was when he realized that he was curled up tightly under Kiana's small jacket.
Kiana hesitated, then looked around before turning back to Shu. "Then… Do you want to wear this today?"
Shu: "…"
He was just too engrossed in his thoughts, and he'd lost control over his body for a bit. His body had started to develop its own consciousness. No biggie.
"I'm fine." Shu waved his hand and stood up, supporting himself against the wall. He gave the jacket to Kiana. "Thank you for the jacket last night. Didn't know you were so considerate."
"Of course!" Kiana was delighted to be praised. She puffed out her chest proudly, "Didn't you say you were going to follow me? Then as the leader, I have to take care of you!"
Shu: "…" I see. You not only read martial arts novels, but you also watch gangster movies…
Fu Hua woke up at this time, sitting up and greeting the two.
Shu looked at Fu Hua, thinking back to her injury, and couldn't help but ask, "Fu Hua, how's your leg?"
As he was talking, Shu's gaze moved to the pile of equipment and saw the rope that Kiana used to secure Fu Hua to his back.
"It's fine…" Fu Hua also looked at her wound and then at Shu with a complicated gaze. "You said yesterday… that we needed to leave as soon as possible…"
She was ready, but Fu Hua wasn't sure if she could keep up with these two. At the very least, her wounds had not worsened. If she just gritted her teeth, she might not drag the two of them down.
"No, I changed my mind." But Shu shook his head. He stretched and sat back down.
"Huh?"
Shu smiled, "I thought about it while I was sleeping. You're right. We do need some rest. And it's early morning. No one wants to start a journey so soon, right, Kiana?"
Kiana stared at Shu, blankly. She subconsciously shook her head, and then repeatedly nodded.
"Yes, yes, yes! We'll take a break!" Kiana agreed, while guiltily looking away.
For some reason, Shu was scary again! Just like the day before!
