Chapter 60: chapter 5
"GROUND ALL DRAGONS!" Stoick ordered as he, Hiccup, Kala, Gobber and the other riders walked through the Dragon Hanger.
"What?! Why?!" The two Night Furies asked worried, not understanding why Stoick would order such.
"SEAL THE GATES! LOWER THE STORM DOORS!" Stoick continued, ignoring their questions.
Vikings ran about, fulfilling Stoick's orders as they did.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait!" Hiccup said as he and Kala got ahead of Stoick and turned to face him.
"What is happening?" Kala asked, a bit of fear in her green orbs.
"You heard the man! Lock it down!" Gobber shouted, just to make sure that Stoick's orders were heard, Kala's question going unanswered.
"No DRAGON or VIKING sets foot off this island until I give the word!" Stoick declared in anger.
"Because some guy is stirring up trouble in some faraway land?" Hiccup asked, rather upset now.
Stoick finally turned his attention to his son and his future daughter-in-law. "Because Drago Bludvist is a madman. Without conscience or mercy. And if he's built a dragon army…gods help us all." He then turned back to his task and waved at some Vikings in an urgent way. "Get them into their pens!"
"Aye, Stoick!"
"Quickly!" The chief added.
"Then let's fly back out there. We'll follow those trappers to Drago and talk some sense into him." Kala decided, Hiccup nodding in agreement with a determined look on his face.
"No." Stoick shot down. "We fortify the island."
"It's our duty to keep the peace Dad!" Hiccup shot back.
"Peace is over you two. I must prepare you for war." Stoick said sternly.
" War? Stoick, if Drago's coming for the dragons, coming for Hiccup and I , we can't wait around for him to get here." Kala stated firmly.
"Kala's right Dad. Let's go find him and change his mind." Hiccup added just as firmly as his mate.
"Some minds won't be changed you two. Berk is what you need to worry about. A chief protects his own." Stoick explained, then turned away from the young Night Furies once more. "SECURE THE STABLE! LATCH EVERY STALL!"
Hiccup and Kala shared a glance and nodded at one another, Kala transformed just seconds later and Hiccup mounted her back. Nanna grabbed his arm with an upset look.
"Guys, don't!" She said with worry, but also anger in her words.
"We have to." Hiccup said as he pulled his arm out of her grip.
"THIS WAY! QUICKLY!" Stoick urged as he gestured for villagers to make it further in.
Hiccup and Kala took that as their chance to blast past everyone as they headed for the exit.
"HICCUP, KALA!" Stoick yelled as he took notice of them flying past.
Before they could make it out the first door, it closes on them and they both growl in annoyance. Kala then spins around and dives through the gap of the second lowering storm door.
"Hiccup, Kala!" Stoick shouted once more as he ran to the storm door.
Nanna groaned and mounted Stormfly's back, knowing full well that the Nadder would want to make sure her adopted siblings wouldn't get out of hand, urging her to go after them. They blew past Stoick just as the young Night Furies had moments before, slipping through the storm door just before it shut, leaving the chief fuming within.

As Hiccup and I sped away from Berk, we talked over what we would do when we caught up to Eret's ship. The conversation was cut short though as Stormfly roared at us, making me slow down so she and Nanna could catch up.
"Okay, what in Odin's name are you two planning?" Nanna asked with her arms crossed.
"You'll see. Just go along with it, okay?" Hiccup said with a small smile.
Nanna raised a brow the same time Stormfly raised a brow bone. "Oh really? This plan isn't going to end up being a failure that results in a battle is it?"
"No, we swear it. Just follow our lead, alright? Please guys." Hiccup asked, most likely giving them a pleading look.
Nanna sighed and nodded. "Oh, alright. Whatcha say, Storm? You okay with going along with your siblings' shenanigans again?" She asked as she rubbed Stormfly's head.
" May as well since we are already out here. " The Nadder agreed, although it just came out as squawks to Nanna.
Hiccup and I smiled happily, purrs leaving our throats as we did so. The moment was broken when we heard shouting from below.
"HEADS! OFF THE PORT QUARTER!" We heard none other than Eret himself exclaim.
I sped up a bit as he threw out orders, dodging a net that was sent our way as I circled the ship.
"Come on, reload!" A trapper yelled as I began to land. "Incoming!"
Just as I landed, the trappers scattered and not a second later Stormfly landed next to me.
"And here I was worried we might turn up empty-handed." Eret said as he came up to us as Hiccup and Nanna dismounted, his arms splayed out.
"Nope. It's your lucky day. We give up." Hiccup said with his hands raised.
Nanna and Stormfly gave us shocked looks as Hiccup and I made our way to the live well.
"That's one Night Fury, one Deadly Nadder and two of the finest dragon riders west of Luk Tuk. That oughta make the boss happy, right? Excuse us." Hiccup said as we made our way past the trappers.
I growled a bit as one tried to touch me and he backed away. I then helped Hiccup open the grate and helped him lower himself down into the live well.
"What are you doing?" Nanna asked as she and Stormfly came over.
I helped Nanna down into the live well when she was close enough then I backed away once Hiccup rubbed my head with a smile.
"Stay girls." He said as he looked at Stormfly and I, then looked at Eret as he lowered the grate. "The dragons don't really care for cramped spaces, so they'll just hang out with you. They won't be any trouble."
The trappers then pulled out their weapons. When I turned to look at them all I jumped into the air with my back arched, landing on my paws in the same position. I growled at them as they kept their weapons close to me.
"Unless you do that. Wooden boat, big ocean–How's your swimming?" Hiccup asked, which got the trappers to lower their weapons slightly.
"Not good." One answered.
All of the trappers then jumped back as a burst of flame erupted from the live well. Hiccup lifted his Inferno through the grate.
"Oops. Almost forgot. Can't have armed prisoners." He joked as he sheathed Inferno, then offered it up to them.
One of the trappers cautiously took it from him and began to look it over. As the trappers were distracted by that, I laid down in front of the live well, my tail curled around me as I did so.
"How is this a plan?" Nanna whispered to us, but we ignored the question to keep the charade going.
"Just what every Dragon Trapper needs. One end coats the blade in Monstrous Nightmare saliva." Hiccup explained as the trappers tried to figure out how his sword functioned.
The trapper then found the button that released the Zippleback gas from the pommel of the hilt and Hiccup smirked a bit.
"The other sprays Hideous Zippleback gas. All it takes is a spark and…" He said, knowing that the trapper was going to find the lighter.
Just as the trapper ignited the gas, Hiccup ducked back into the live well and I covered my face with my wing. I knew Stormfly did the same as the sudden explosion swept over the deck.
"Oh, yeah, there you go!" Hiccup said, feigning happiness as he lifted his head back out of the grate as Stormfly and I uncovered our faces. "Once they see you as one of their own, even the testiest dragon can be trained, right, girl?"
I purred happily as he scratched the top of my head once he was out of the live well, Nanna climbing out right behind him.
"Give me that!" Eret shouted as he forcefully took the sword from the trapper and threw it into the ocean.
Stormfly squawked in surprise and chased after it.
"What game are you playing?" Eret asked as he made his way towards us with a glare.
"No game." Hiccup reassured. "We just want to meet Drago."
Stormfly came back with Hiccup's Inferno and dropped it into Hiccup's open hand. He then put it back onto his leg and crossed his arms.
"Why?" Eret asked with a skeptical look on his face as I stood from my lying position.
"Because I'm going to change his mind about dragons." My mate stated firmly.
Eret and his men laughed at that.
"I wouldn't laugh about that if I were you. He can be really persuasive." Nanna said with a hand on her hip as she put all her weight onto one leg.
"Once you've earned her loyalty, there is nothing a dragon won't do for you." Hiccup said as he scratched my head, which I leaned into happily while purring from the attention.
"Puh! You won't be changing any minds around here." Eret said confidently.
"I can change yours." Hiccup said as he looked at Eret, stopping the scratching as he did. "Right here. Right now."
I went in between Hiccup and Eret, knowing that Hiccup was going to show Eret the joys of flying. I looked at Eret as Hiccup went to mount my back.
"May I?" My mate asked, both of us looking at the trapper with determination.
Before we could actually do anything though, Hiccup was snatched up by Hookfang and Snotlout as the twins had Barf and Belch slice through the port sail.
"Dragon riders!" Eret exclaimed as he backed up.
I groaned and roared at the others as they flew past.
" Not cool Hookfang! " I shouted as I climbed onto the top of the boat, not sure if I should fly after them or not.
Hiccup struggled in Hookfang's claws with a growl. "Put me down, Snotlout! What are you doing?!"
Snotlout ignored my mate as he looked over at the twins with a smirk. "See how well I protect and provide?" He said to Ruffnut, but then he and the twins had to dodge as nets were sent their way.
I glared at the trappers, then took to the air and blasted apart a net that was close to capturing Hiccup.
"Aggh! What is with all the nets?!" Tuffnut complained.
"Hey, watch it!" Ruffnut yelled. "That was close…" She began to say, then her eyes widened as she spotted Eret down on the ship. "Oh, my."
Ruffnut stared lovingly at him. "Me likey." She said with a dreamy air about her voice, then she raised her arms with her eyes closed. "Take me."
Hiccup pushed off Hookfang and dived, I took notice of this and met him halfway. He grabbed hold of the saddle and secured himself then I made my way back to the ship.
"HOLD YOUR FIRE!" Nanna exclaimed, which got the trappers to stop in their tracks.
This gave me the opportunity to land. As I did, Hiccup dismounted as the both of us glared at the others as they all landed on the ship. Snotlout, Fishlegs, the twins, Gobber, and Stoick had come rushing after us.
"WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING HERE?!" Hiccup asked, very upset. He was able to keep his appearance from changing though.
"We're here to rescue you!" Gobber said.
"WE DON'T NEED to be rescued!" Hiccup shot back growling a bit.
"ENOUGH!" Stoick shouted as he dismounted Skullcrusher and made his way towards us.
"Well, didn't you just pick the wrong ship, eh?" Eret said as he put his attention on our chief. "I am Eret. son of–" He began, but was cut off as Stoick pushed him out of the way by his face.
Gobber then hit him in the head and had Grump drop on top of him, falling asleep and pinning him to the deck as he did.
"Get…this…thing…off…me!" Eret ordered breathlessly.
"Anyone else?" Gobber asked as he looked at the other trappers, who backed away sheepishly. "That's what I figured."
"You. Saddle up. We're going home." Stoick ordered once he was in front of Hiccup and I.
"No." Hiccup shot back with his arms crossed, which I added to with a huff of defiance towards Stoick.
"Of all the irresponsible–"
"We're trying to protect the dragons and stop a war! How is that irresponsible?" Hiccup asked.
"BECAUSE WAR IS WHAT HE WANTS, SON!" Stoick shouted, which got Hiccup and I to flinch.
He then sighed and ran a hand over his face before continuing. "Years ago, there was a great gathering of chieftains to discuss the dragon scourge we all faced. Into our midst came a stranger from a strange land, covered in scars and draped in a cloak of dragon skin. He carried no weapon and spoke softly, saying that he, Drago Bludvist, was a man of the people, devoted to freeing mankind from the tyranny of dragons. He claimed that he alone could control the dragons and he alone could keep us safe, if we chose to bow down and follow him."
The other riders laughed at the story, whereas Hiccup and I looked at one another with concern.
"Stupid." Ruffnut said as she calmed down from her laughing fit.
"Good one." Tuffnut added as he wiped at his eye.
"Aye. We laughed, too…Until he wrapped himself in his cloak and cried out, 'Then see how well you do without me!'. The rooftop suddenly burst into flames, and from it, armored dragons descended, burning the hall to the ground. I…was the only one to escape." Stoick explained.
This got the others to go completely silent, all of us looking rather disturbed by the story.
"Men who kill without reason cannot be reasoned with." Stoick added.
"Maybe." Hiccup said, his and I's minds still set on trying to reason with Drago.
"Hiccup…" Stoick said, already knowing all too well that our minds were still set.
"We're still going to try. That is what we're good at. And if we could change your mind…We can change his, too." Hiccup declared, then he mounted my back once more and we took off.
