How to survive a supernatural world

Chapter 4: Doors and Diseases

After discussion, the four agreed that they should wait in the ancestral hall for a while. If there were other living people in Hejia Village and they knew about the existence of the "taboo", they would definitely come to the ancestral hall to look through the almanac and check whether today would be auspicious or inauspicious.

I don't know what happened tonight, but every house in Hejia Village closed their doors and windows, and no one went out to the ancestral hall to check whether the day was auspicious or not.

This matter is very abnormal, and abnormal means weird.

"Do you have any idea?" Zhang Yangxu asked while waiting.

"No." Ning Zhe shook his head and said, "The He family would come to the ancestral hall to check the almanac every night at midnight, but they didn't come today. Either they don't care about seeking good luck and avoiding disaster, or they have other ways to know whether it will be good or bad today. Or... there is some kind of danger in the ancestral hall today, so they dare not come."

"Oh?" Zhang Yangxu was a little curious: "Is that so?"

"I don't know, it's just a guess." Ning Zhe spread his hands.

"Danger...danger?" Feng Yusu's face turned pale when she heard that there might be danger in the ancestral hall. She was a Buddhist to begin with, and after witnessing the weirdness of the snake god in Hejia Village with her own eyes, she became even more terrified and walked on thin ice in everything she did.

Feng Yushu looked at the tablet of the deceased and the statue of the snake god on the lotus platform with lingering fear, then looked at Ning Zhe with a look of help, and suggested: "Otherwise, let's go out and wait outside the ancestral hall...Would it be offensive to stay in front of the snake god all the time?"

"I think so too." Ning Zhe agreed and turned his gaze to Zhang Yangxu and Xie Sining: "What do you think?"

"That makes sense. A place like the ancestral hall is not for outsiders to enter, let alone stay here for a long time." Xie Si Ning also felt the same way: "Mr. Zhang, are we going out?"

Zhang Yangxu glanced at Ning Zhe silently and nodded: "Let's go."

The four of them left the lotus platform enshrining the snake god through the main gate and stood under the eaves outside the ancestral hall waiting.

There was not much to talk about between a few strangers, so Xie Sining suggested that everyone could share with each other how they got involved in Hejia Village. Perhaps they could find some common points or clues to leave here.

Feng Yushuo spoke first, "Yesterday...it should be the day before yesterday. My husband, my daughter and I stayed at a hotel in Gubei Town. Because he has the habit of working alone at night, we booked three rooms, one for him, one for me and one for my daughter."

"It was around 7pm, and I made some coffee to take to my husband's room... but when I opened his door and stepped through the door frame, what appeared in front of me was not a hotel room, but a narrow alley paved with bluestone slabs."

Feng Yushu said with lingering fear: "At that time, the stainless steel door handle in my hand turned into an old brass door latch. Behind me was a low-rise house with stone and tile. The house was empty... It was as if I had just walked out of this door."

Zhang Yangxu nodded slightly. "My situation was similar. My car was parked at a gas station outside Gubei Town. The driver went to the toilet. I asked Si Ning to buy me a pack of cigarettes, but she didn't come back and didn't reply to my messages. I had no choice but to open the car door and go out to look for her. The moment I opened the car door and got out of the car, I came here."

Xie Si Ning continued, "I bought the cigarettes that Mr. Zhang wanted in the store at the gas station, but after I opened the door and left the store, the concrete pavement under my feet was no longer the concrete pavement of the gas station, but the stone slabs paved on the streets of Hejia Village."

"I'll be more direct." Ning Zhe nodded and said, "I returned to my hometown, opened the door of the old house, and then came here."

Zhang Yangxu's eyes narrowed slightly, as if he was thinking about something.

Is it a coincidence? Or is it inevitable? Whether it is the door of the old house, the door of the hotel, the glass door of the department store... or even the door of the car, the process of the four people coming to Hejia Village is different, but they are all related to the "door".

Ning Zhe's expression is still calm, thinking in his heart: "It's a pity that Lin Zhiyuan is already dead, otherwise I can ask him how he got here, whether he also passed through a certain door?"

Suddenly, a black shadow appeared at the edge of Ning Zhe's vision and disappeared in a flash.

"There's someone in the alley across the street, and he's trying to run." Ning Zhe took out his cell phone without hesitation, turned on the flashlight, and pointed the light towards an alley across the street.

The flashlight built into the mobile phone has a short lighting range. Ning Zhe did this just to convey the coordinate information of the black shadow to other people in the most direct and fast way. Describing it with words is too inefficient and easily distorted.

But what was strange was that the black figure who was trying to run away just now stopped after seeing the flashlight in Ning Zhe's hand.

The man took two steps towards this side, and then a white light came out from his hand, which was also a flashlight.

"Great, it's a living person." Feng Yuxu breathed a sigh of relief. Her heart almost jumped out of her chest just now.

When I got closer, I realized that there were not just one person in the alley across the street, but two people, a man and a woman, both young, and they seemed to be college students.

"Hello, my name is Gu Yunqing." The young man first revealed his name, and then introduced the young woman next to him: "This is my senior, we are both students of Qinzhou Medical University."

"My name is Ye Miaozhu." Gu Yunqing's senior introduced herself: "Were you also accidentally dragged into this place?"

Ning Zhe nodded.

After some communication, everyone exchanged information and identity documents, and Gu Yunqing and Ye Miaozhu both showed their internship certificates.

Gu Yunqing and Ye Miaozhu are both interns. Qinzhou Medical University has always had a tradition of sending students to small clinics in remote areas to intern and accumulate experience, which is similar to teaching in remote areas. Their internship location is the designated medical point in Gubei Town.

Like Ning Zhe and the other four, Gu Yunqing and Ye Miaozhu came here after pushing open the doors of the clinic and pharmacy respectively.

"It's definitely related to the door." Ning Zhe's guess became more certain: "If we all entered Hejia Village through the 'door', does this mean that somewhere in this village, there is also a 'door' hidden that can allow us to leave this strange world and return to reality?"

"Not sure, but possible." Zhang Yangxu agreed with his guess.

Zhang Yangxu then asked Ye Miaozhu, "You should know the existence of good and bad luck and taboos, but why didn't you go into the ancestral hall to look at the almanac, but hid in the alley across the street?"

Ye Miaozhu shook his head: "We dare not go in."

Gu Yunqing also said: "The He family usually came to the ancestral hall on time every day to look through the almanac and check the fortune, but today none of them came. Do you know why?"

"Why?" Feng Yusu asked hurriedly.

Gu Yunqing took a deep breath and said, "I also overheard two elderly villagers talking about this... They said that the snake god was sick, and today was the day he fell ill."
