Vol. 1 Chapter 2.3 - A Strange Cohabitation with a Natural Enemy (3)
Meanwhile, the man who had left the room after leaving Si-wol alone glanced around with sharp eyes. And soon, a meaning of surprise settled in those eyes.
‘He lives more like a human than I expected.’
The man thought as he surveyed the living room scenery. Si-wol’s house, with two rooms, was small but suitable for one person to live in.
Si-wol seemed to have a keen interest in interior design, as even in the somewhat narrow space, he had arranged the furniture compactly and decorated it well. Various accessories and furniture were adorned in a vibrant mint color, as if emphasizing the focal point. The overall atmosphere was very cozy and endearing.
In fact, these things were not visible when he first entered this house. At that time, he was busy checking for escape routes in case Si-wol and he were to engage in a battle. It was only after he confined Si-wol inside the room that he had the leisure to see his surroundings.
The man sat on the mint-colored two-seater sofa on one side of the wall. In truth, it was more fitting to say that he folded his body into the sofa. He frowned as he uncomfortably looked at his knees, which were sticking out awkwardly.
The house was small, and so was the sofa. Well, the vampire living in this house was also quite slender in stature.
Still, the man did not let his guard down for a moment from the moment he faced Si-wol. Despite his youthful appearance, he knew that this individual, who boldly conducted internet personal broadcasts on the theme of vampires, would prove to be a formidable opponent. Of course, reality did not live up to his expectations.
Instead of scanning the living room, the man’s gaze fell upon the room where Si-wol was confined. It seemed as if he could see Si-wol, huddled and crying, through the tightly closed door. Since last night, Si-wol had been crying incessantly without showing any signs of stopping.
“
Phew
…”
The man let out a deep sigh as he leaned back against the sofa. He ran his hand through his hair, feeling frustrated. And then, he closed his eyes for a moment and pondered.
‘Why did I do that in the first place?’
Inside the man’s eyelids, the face of Si-wol, who had cried so sorrowfully last night, flashed by.
A vampire pleading for mercy and drenching everything with tears. It was somewhat bewildering to see such a contrasting image compared to the vampires he had encountered before… Why did he readily accept such an absurd proposition?
Even thinking about it himself, he couldn’t believe it, and a wry, self-deprecating smile escaped him.
To make a deal with a vampire, it was something that should never have happened in the first place. As someone who had undergone rigorous training to eliminate vampires on sight, it was even more nonsensical. To consider the vampire’s circumstances and spare their life, he was no different from a failed hunter.
He tried to figure out why he acted that way last night, but he couldn’t find any reason. Instead, he found himself getting agitated whenever Si-wol glanced at him and cowered, raising his thorns like a startled hedgehog.
‘Well, I can kill him anytime… Should I keep watching a little longer?’
The man finished his calculations in his head and nodded. It was more advantageous to kill three pureblood vampires who were difficult to capture, rather than easily killing a half-blood vampire. Plus, he wouldn’t have to go through the trouble of searching for them himself.
Ring
…
Ring
…
At that moment, the man’s phone vibrated unexpectedly. He frowned as he looked at the number on the screen. He briefly considered not answering, but it felt too awkward to deliberately avoid a call from headquarters.
“Yes.”
In the end, the man answered the phone briefly. Then, a voice on the other end erupted, shouting his name.
—Jin Ian-ssi!!
“….”
Even though he had lowered the volume, the voice was still loud enough to be heard outside the phone.
—Jin Ian-ssi?! Oh, is this not Jin Ian-ssi’s phone?
Without even giving him time to respond, he casually asked about the owner of the phone. In response to his nonchalant voice, the man, Ian, lowered the volume even more and answered.
“Yes, Director. It’s me.”
Before Ian could finish his sentence, the person on the other end, after confirming his identity, asked another question.
—Where are you right now? No, what are you doing? You disappeared after saying you found a crazy mosquito, and there hasn’t been any news from you… I thought you had really died this time!
Irritated, Ian responded sharply to the other person who shamelessly asked about killing people as if it were nothing in their imagination.
“I already killed the mosquito I found.”
In reality, he had kept it alive without causing any harm and locked it in the room, but Ian lied smoothly.
—Then why aren’t you returning to headquarters quickly? What are you doing?
“I found the whereabouts of another mosquito during the mission, so I’m going to kill a few more before coming back.”
Upon hearing Ian’s words, his superior let out a deep sigh. Then, in a tone of complete incomprehension, he poured out his words.
—Why is the entire overseas dispatch team like this? Are they all workaholics? Or are they hunting addicts? I called you all the way to Korea to take a break, but you’re out all day killing mosquitoes. You said it was your wish to be diligent, Jin Ian-ssi? At this rate, you’ll die from overwork before being diligent. That’s right! You’re right. Diligence is a luxury for someone like Ian-ssi.
With a constant stream of nagging, Ian momentarily closed his mouth. He had learned long ago that it was better to stay quiet when the director was so excitedly rambling on.
Seeing no response from Ian, the director mistakenly thought that his nagging was getting through and continued to pour out his words.
—If you catch the ones you’ve identified right now, return immediately! I’m already sick from the hunter shortage, and if I lose you too, I’ll be in trouble with the head of the European branch!
“….”
—Since you’re not responding, I guess you have no intention of listening to my request?
“I don’t understand why you’re asking me when you already know.”
—Tsk! Fine, forget it. I don’t remember ever winning a wrestling match against you in my life. Just… don’t die no matter what you do. Don’t die from overwork or diligence! Hunt while getting enough sleep, please.”
“Understood.”
—Don’t go around starving yourself for days thinking that you won’t die! Don’t skip meals!
“I will report back in a month. See you then.”
Ian, who unilaterally hung up on his boss, clicked his tongue in annoyance.
In a month, his vacation in Korea would come to an end. As the day to return to the UK approached, his boss’s worry pierced the sky. It seemed that with the shortage of hunters in the headquarters these days, he was concerned that there might be casualties during the vacation.
In fact, Ian had planned to spend this vacation as a real vacation. If it weren’t for the suspicious vampire he accidentally came across while surfing the internet.
‘I wish I could pretend not to know even if the suspicion was spread so widely.’
A streamer on the internet, wearing the concept of a vampire and even accepting blood donations without fear.
On one hand, he thought that there were so many crazy people in the world that this guy might be one of them. But with suspicion and curiosity, he watched Si-wol’s broadcast and became convinced. This guy was 100% a vampire. And seriously stupid.
He bit the necks of his viewers and drew blood, claiming it was a sign. There was no way not to know.
But no hunter had recognized Si-wol so far. It was understandable, as hunters didn’t have time to watch the broadcasts of relatively unknown streamers. If it weren’t for the fact that the information about Si-wol didn’t appear on the main page of internet portal sites, Ian would have never known about him.
‘It must be a coincidence… but the timing is really amazing.’
