Vol. 1 Chapter 3.10 - The Dog and Wolf's Time (1.10)
Two hours had already passed since the broadcast began. Yi-eon would be arriving soon.
Just then, Citrus turned to him, a suspicious look on his face.
“Why do you keep checking the clock?”
“
Eek
! W-What?”
“You’ve been glancing at the clock this whole time, ever since the broadcast started. Are you waiting for something?”
“….!”
Si-wol’s mouth snapped shut at Citrus’ sharp question like a deer caught in headlights.
‘He’s suspicious of me!’
He should have come up with a lie, brushed it off casually, but he’d panicked. His lips trembled as he tried to stammer out an excuse.
“N-No, it’s nothing… I was just checking the time because it’s almost time to end the stream.”
“Why have you been waiting for it to end ever since it started, then?”
“Uh…”
Citrus’ piercing gaze felt like a brand against Si-wol’s skin. He quickly curled his hands on top of his lap, hoping to hide his trembling fingers. Cold sweat trickled down his back, soaking through his shirt.
‘W-What do I say?!’
He couldn’t exactly tell him the truth—that a hunter was about to burst through that door to kill him. That the broadcast had to end earlier than usual, and he’d been anxiously watching the clock, counting down the seconds.
‘There’s no way I can say that on air!’
But the longer Si-wol remained silent, the more suspicious Citrus became.
Just then, as if on cue—
“Vampi-
nim
, are you feeling okay? You’re sweating so much…” Cherry approached him like his savior, noticing how he was shrinking back. With desperation written all over his face, Si-wol quickly grabbed his hand.
“Yes! T-That’s right! I think I’m coming down with something. We should probably end the stream here today.”
His tear-stained face actually worked in his favor this time. The chat exploded with concern at his words.
≫ Oh my ㅠ Vampi-
nim
’s such a fragile little thing…
≫ The weakest vampire in the universe ㅠㅠ
≫ Cherry-
nim
better give him lots of blood today.
≫ Get well soon ᅮᅮᅮᅮᅮᅮᅮᅮᅮᅮ
≫ ᅳᅳHuh? You’re sick again?
≫ More like Sicklypire LOLOLOL
≫ You guys are being way too harsh on someone who’s unwell;
≫ Get some rest, Vampi-
nim
, and come back tomorrow with a fun game~
Luckily, most of his viewers were on his side. Normally, they would have protested his early sign-off, but this time, they rallied around Si-wol against Citrus’ attacks.
Si-wol was touched by their support and did his best to ignore Citrus’ intense stare. With their help, he was able to swiftly wrap up the broadcast.
“Um, then Citrus-
nim
, please wait here while I take Cherry-
nim
for a blood draw.”
Leaving the wary and increasingly suspicious vampire in the main room, Si-wol hurried out, pulling Cherry with him towards the smaller room he used for blood donations. His movements were unusually swift, a sense of urgency underlying every step.
“Vampi-
nim
, you’re not inviting him back, are you? There’s something off about that guy. I was on edge this whole time.”
Cherry quickly complained with evident annoyance to Si-wol, who was silently wiping the sweat from his forehead.
“Yes, I won’t be inviting him back.”
Si-wol still had to bring two more strangers in for the broadcast, after all. The thought hung heavy in the air, unspoken, but evident in Si-wol’s weary tone. Cherry, oblivious to the turmoil raging inside him, continued to chatter away.
“That Citrus guy… It felt like he took the whole “vampire” thing way too seriously. I get that it’s all an act for the stream, but the way he looked down on you, dismissed you, acting like he was some superior pureblood! Even I felt uncomfortable. The viewers must have been even more put off by it. Are you sure he’s a regular viewer of yours, Vampi-
nim
?”
How could someone who supposedly enjoyed Si-wol’s broadcasts be so incredibly rude to him? Si-wol forced a chuckle, weaving another lie.
“I asked Citrus-
nim
to be hard on me on purpose. There has to be a distinction between a pureblood and a half-blood, you know?”
“Staying true to the concept is good and all, but the viewers… they want to see the playful banter between you two, not someone belittling and insulting Vampi-
nim
…” Cherry trailed off, glancing at Si-wol’s downcast expression. She let out a small sigh.
“But I’m sure you had a vision for how you wanted this to go, Vampi-
nim
, so I shouldn’t pry. Anyway, let’s get this over with. I want to get out of here as soon as possible, preferably without running into that guy again…”
It was obvious Cherry wanted nothing more to do with Citrus after the way he’d treated Si-wol. Si-wol managed a weak smile, shaking his head at his words.
“Actually, you don’t have to donate blood today.”
“Huh? Then why did you call me all the way here?”
“Having a donor come to our home for a blood draw also serves as a promotion for blood donation awareness. Besides, it’s only been two months since your last donation, Cherry-
nim
. Frequent blood draws aren’t healthy for you. Today I just wanted to go with the whole ‘two vampires and a human’ vibe for the broadcast. Thank you so much for accommodating my request on such short notice.”
Si-wol stammered out the excuse he had prepared beforehand. Another lie, made to keep his end of the bargain with Yi-eon; that he wouldn’t take any blood from viewers during this stream.
Cherry bought it completely, his face brightening at his words.
“So, I’m free to go?”
“Of course. Take care, and see you again soon.”
Si-wol saw him out, and with a final wave goodbye, Cherry slipped out the door.
He stood there for a moment, staring at the closed door, before dropping his head against it with a soft thud. Dejection filled his eyes as he stared down at his feet.
‘Haa… So, even they can tell.’
Si-wol’s mood dampened as soon as the broadcast ended due to Cherry’s immediate complaint about Citrus.
In truth, broadcasting had been excruciating for Si-wol. It brought back memories of the humiliation and contempt he’d endured from pure-blooded vampires. He thought he had grown used to it by now and could shrug it off, but that wasn’t the case at all. The sharp hostility emanating from the pure-blooded vampires felt like needles pricking his eyes, knives stabbing the back of his neck, and daggers piercing his chest.
「 Fuck. What do you think you’re doing, half-breed? Why won’t you get lost already? 」
「Lee Si-wol, do you know when a half-breed like you is most useful? When you wag your tail as bait in front of those hunter bastards—that’s when!」
「Why are you cowering? You’re good at it, aren’t you? You seduced a pureblood and became a half-blood, so why can’t you seduce a hunter? You think you deserve to be treated the same as us?」
「What? You’re saying the hunters are after you? Ah, shit! Then why the hell are you calling us in the middle of this, you bastard?! Do you want to get us caught too? Fuck off, don’t ever contact us again.」
「You should be grateful that we even put up with you for this long. A half-breed piece of trash like you dares to covet my prey?」
「Once a half-breed, always a half-breed, I guess. Just looking at your filthy mug makes me lose my appetite, so keep your head down.」
The countless instances of past hostility Si-wol had endured came flooding back, forcing him into a corner. He thought he had forgotten about them, but they were vividly etched in his mind, as if meticulously recorded in a diary. Despite having torn up every page, when he closed his eyes, it was horrifying to see everything taped back together.
‘…Even though I begged.’
He had pleaded with him, hands clasped, to please not let it show during the broadcast, to conceal his disdain for him even for a little while. But his pleas had fallen on deaf ears.
Despite this, Si-wol had done his best to pretend as if all was well, even if it meant doing so alone. He didn’t want his viewers finding out about his embarrassing situation.
However, based on what Cherry said, everyone seemed to have already caught on. On one hand, he felt grateful that they kept quiet for his sake, but on the other, he couldn’t shake off the humiliation.
“This sucks, seriously…”
Si-wol blinked back the hot tears welling up in his eyes.
Just then, he sensed a chilling presence behind him. Before he could turn around, icy fingers grabbed him by the nape of his neck.
“You thought it was fun deceiving me?”
It was Citrus.
“…
Ghk
?!” A pained groan escaped from Si-wol’s throat under the tight grip on his neck. Shocked, he reflexively raised both hands to pry away the fingers clamped around his throat. In response, Citrus yanked Si-wol closer before violently shoving him away.
“
Ugh
!”
Crash
! With a loud bang, Si-wol’s forehead slammed against the front door. The shock was greater than the pain. Si-wol froze, his entire body trembling.
“
Ha
, fucker. I knew something was up. A half-breed like you daring to give blood to a pureblood? Even you would have thought it was suspicious, right? A pathetic creature like you, barely clinging to life, acting like you’d offer precious blood to another vampire. Eh? Fucking hell, answer me!”
Bang
,
bang
! Citrus slammed Si-wol against the door twice more, growling menacingly. Fear seized Si-wol, and he shook violently.
“
Ugh
, n-no.
Arghh
! I-I really… I was going to give… b-blood—”
“Really? Then where’s the blood you just extracted from that bastard?”
“….!”
At Citrus’s demand for evidence, Si-wol pursed his lips tightly. He couldn’t possibly show him. He’d let Cherry go because of the promise he’d made to Yi-eon.
However, he had no idea how the unfamiliar vampire behind him might react if he didn’t offer the blood immediately. Trapped in an unpredictable situation, Si-wol stood frozen, trembling uncontrollably.
“I should’ve known not to trust a half-breed.”
“I-I’m,
heuk
, s-sorry.”
“No, no. What you owe me is far greater than a simple apology, don’t you think?”
“…What?
Arghh
!”
Suddenly, a powerful force clamped down on his neck, threatening to snap it in half. Si-wol gasped for breath, struggling in a panic.
