Chapter 18 - IV
Uncle Wang overcame his embarrassment and became more direct, “Actually, you shouldn’t have followed your mother back then. You were so naive. Some people are born into privilege, and others are born as commoners. You should understand this at your age. Leave for the Xie family, let your mother, who has nothing, work for others in the future. It’s no longer realistic for you to inherit the family business. Your brother is still young, and your father is still in his prime. The best way out for you now is to get married. You can enjoy a life of luxury in the future. Isn’t that good?”
It seemed absurd to become a wife, but it didn’t appear too difficult at this point.
More importantly, his husband was a vegetable, requiring no interaction. This didn’t seem too bad.
Xie Qi felt a tinge of sadness as his bottom line gradually lowered.
Contemplating this, he felt calm and composed. He smiled, revealing a faint dimple on one side of his mouth. Despite his cold exterior, there was a sweetness in his demeanor. “Sorry, Uncle Wang, you’re a bit late. I’m already engaged.”
Uncle Wang was stunned, “I’m genuinely looking out for you; you can’t joke like this.”
Xie Qi calmly stated, “What I said is true. Since my father hasn’t send the remaining 200,000 for a long time, I took the opportunity to get engaged to someone else. Believe it or not, I’m quite sought after.”
Uncle Wang exclaimed, “How is that possible?! You’re too impulsive!”
Xie Qi replied with composure, “No way, I’m short of money.”
Uncle Wang became emotional, “How can you be so cheap? Just for 200,000? Do you know how much benefit marrying into the Yun family could bring to the Xie family? Just for 200,000 you sell yourself????!”
Xie Qi’s face turned cold, “…cheap? It seems that you all regard me as a commodity. Will my marriage to the Yun family bring as much benefit to the Xie family as on me? Even if it’s 200,000, it’s all mine after all. Unlike Xie Dai, who is so wealthy, he doesn’t even contribute to support his son. He only gives 100,000. He’s a businessman with no contractual integrity, and you expect me to fulfill the agreement. Isn’t this a well-known double standard?”
Uncle Wang was so angered that his chest heaved violently, “How can you talk like this? Who treats you as a commodity? I am also doing this for your own good! Look at your living standards; did they not plummet after your mother left your father? When your mother had your father’s money, she could enroll you in various extra classes. After the divorce, can she still afford those classes? Can she provide you with the best education? Marrying into the Yun family won’t force you to drop out of school! Yun Yi has liked you since you were a child, and he will undoubtedly treat you well. He will give you whatever you want. What else are you dissatisfied with?”
Xie Qi: “…So it’s Yun Yi? I used to beat him a lot when I was a kid, but he still likes me. That’s impressive. Find someone to give him a few whips, and the problem will be solved.”
Uncle Wang: “…”
Xie Qi: “Okay, you can go back. I have to serve my husband tomorrow. I’m a married man now, so don’t mess with me.”
After expressing his thanks, he went upstairs.
.
Uncle Wang stood there for a while before reluctantly calling Xie Dai and truthfully reporting what Xie Qi had told him.
Xie Dai remained arrogant, “What’s so difficulty? Find the man he was engaged to, force him to break off the engagement, and Xie Qi will come back obediently. Jiang Sining has been thriving these years. She sold her son for free medication. Hehe, she sold my son only for 200,000. Her hair is long, but her knowledge is short.”
Uncle Wang said, “Alright, I’ll check it out in the next few days.”
Xie Dai: “Don’t worry, even though Yun Yi is a decent guy, there are also some suitors from other families. I didn’t expect my son to be quite popular with men.”
Uncle Wang responded, “Don’t worry, sir, I’ll take care of it.”
.
Returning home, Xie Qi remembered he still had 100,000 yuan left to repay. However, after hearing what Uncle Wang said, he hesitated to return it.
The minimum alimony was 2,000 per month. Over the past seven years, Xie Dai should have paid at least 16,000, but he never paid a dime.
If he didn’t repay the money back, he was afraid Xie Dai might cheat and sue him. Could he also sue him for not paying alimony?
Xie Qi wasn’t well-versed in legal matters, but involving Jiang Sining might not be the best solution given her temperament. He decided it would be better to repay without leaving any clues. He messaged Uncle Wang asking for his account details to return the money to the Xie family.
Uncle Wang didn’t reply, so Xie Qi waited. But there was no response at all.
By the time Xie Qi finished his homework, it was already eight o’clock. The third year of high school was challenging, draining his brain cells and straining his eyes. The accumulated fatigue was much deeper than others.
After washing up, he cooked noodles for himself. After eating, he cleaned up, washed the dishes, and put them away without drying his hands before heading for a shower. Seeing his house covered in dust again, he felt uneasy.
Xie Qi, who loved cleanliness, couldn’t stand the dust, so he dragged his tired body to hastily mop the floor before taking a shower and falling asleep on the bed.
As he drifted into sleep, thoughts lingered on how he would repay the 200,000.
Yao Wenzhu’s demeanor seemed jittery, but her words held a soft power, resembling a gentle stream that offered little room for resistance and rejection. Her genuine concern for him felt like that of an impeccable mother, and he, as her daughter-in-law, could only embrace her kindness with gratitude.
Xie Qi slipped into a dark and sweet dream, free from contemplation.
