Chapter 218: **Chapter 215: Working Conan**
After receiving an emergency call via satellite phone, Inspector Jūzō Megure and his team, including Wataru Takagi and Kaito Kuroba (disguised as Ninzaburo Shiratori), immediately took a helicopter to the Suzuki family's large ship.
The police soon found Masato Nishino's pen at the crime scene, making him the prime suspect in the murder of Ryū Samukawa.
According to Nishino's own account, he was in his room taking a bath at the time of Samukawa's death. After finishing his bath, he went to call everyone for dinner and found Samukawa's body.
This statement did little to change the fact that he remained the primary suspect.
Fujino knew Nishino wasn't the killer, but he wasn't ready to solve the case just yet.
He had a new plan in mind—turning Conan into a worker bee.
This plan was simple: make Conan do all the hard work of collecting evidence. In the end, Fujino would step forward, deduce the solution, complete his task, and reap the benefits. And along the way, he could also enjoy Conan's frustration.
...
After Conan's relentless investigation, he found that Samukawa's death had a peculiar resemblance to one of Kaito Kid's tricks.
Sensing something was off, Conan used his usual bathroom excuse and successfully slipped away from the scene to call for help—his second "worker," Dr. Agasa.
Ran, noticing Conan's sudden exit, became suspicious and followed him. She realized Conan didn't actually go to the bathroom but headed for a phone booth.
This deepened her suspicions. Just as she was about to approach and see who Conan was calling, she encountered Shiratori.
"Miss Ran, the armed criminal might still be nearby. You should return to the others where it's safer."
Ran hesitated, "But Conan, he's still…"
Before she could finish, a voice came from behind them. "Don't worry, Ran. With me and Officer Shiratori here, Conan will be fine."
Fujino approached from behind them.
"Detective Fujino…"
Ran looked at Fujino and then at Shiratori before reluctantly returning to the dining room.
"Detective Fujino, it's dangerous here. You should also—"
Once Ran was gone, Shiratori smiled at Fujino. "Kid, drop the act."
Fujino slowly walked forward, his tone serious. "Don't think I don't know you're just pretending to be Officer Shiratori."
"Huh?"
Kaito was momentarily stunned.
"Do I need to tear off your disguise?"
Fujino moved closer, ready to pull off Kaito's Shiratori mask.
"Alright, alright! It's me. Do you know how much effort it takes to redo this disguise?" Kaito sighed and stepped back. "You're really something. How do you always manage to see through me?"
Honestly, Kaito was beginning to doubt whether his disguise skills were slipping.
Fujino didn't answer his question but instead asked, "You came aboard for the Scorpion, right?"
"Yeah, I heard someone on the ship had their right eye sniped, so I came to check it out."
Kaito nodded and then teased, "But you guys are really something. Wherever you go, murder cases just seem to follow, like death itself."
"In a way, that's true," Fujino agreed with a nod.
"Huh?"
Kaito was stunned. "Seriously?"
"Just kidding."
Fujino shifted the topic. "Since your target is the Scorpion, maybe we can work together this time."
"Have you already figured out who the Scorpion is?"
Kaito frowned. "I think the Scorpion might have already escaped. I checked the lifeboats earlier, and one's missing."
"That's just a diversion," Fujino said, waving his hand. "The Scorpion is the woman you saw earlier, the one in the red qipao."
"You solved the case that quickly?"
Kaito was puzzled. "She's the Scorpion?"
"That's right."
Fujino nodded. "But we don't have any hard evidence yet. We'll have to wait until we reach the castle to catch her."
After a pause, Fujino asked, "Did you bring your bulletproof glasses this time?"
"I had them prepared last night," Kaito said as he pulled out a monocle.
Impressive. He got them ready overnight?
Fujino wanted to ask if Dr. Agasa had made them, but thought better of it. Even if he asked, Kaito wouldn't answer.
Dr. Agasa's gadgets were really something…
"Fujino, Officer Shiratori, what are you doing here?" Conan, having just gathered information on the Scorpion from the phone booth, rounded the corner and ran into Fujino and Kaito.
At this moment, Conan was a bit flustered.
Recalling the fortune he had drawn earlier, which hinted at the revelation of his true identity, he felt his disguise might soon be exposed.
...
Soon, Conan, the "worker bee," found the truth behind the case. However, with Fujino and Kaito (disguised as Shiratori) around, Conan couldn't openly use his tranquilizer dart on Kogoro Mouri.
So, he had no choice but to guide the case in other ways.
So, I could only frantically guide the case.
In fact, this was a double case where two separate incidents collided.
The first case is about Ryu Hanekawa and Makoto Nishino holding a grudge. Hanekawa planned to switch the ring and pen to frame Nishino.
The second case involves Ryu Hanekawa failing in his scheme and running into Qinglan Urushi by accident. Urushi killed him on the spot.
As for why...
It was probably because, during the surprise attack yesterday, Hanekawa captured something that could expose Qinglan Urushi's identity as a spy.
He brought this on himself…
With tears in his eyes, Fujino reasoned out half of the system task and earned 500,000 yen.
It seems that making Conan work for him is still a viable plan.
"Fujino, you're amazing! You managed to deduce all this so quickly!"
Conan, who had unknowingly become the workhorse, praised Fujino, pretending to be just a kid.
While Conan had been running around gathering evidence and guiding the discussion, Ran was sitting nearby, observing his unusual behavior.
Ran had a despondent look on her face. "Sigh…"
…
In the blink of an eye, it was the next day.
Inspector Shiratori stayed on the boat, spending the night in Fujino's room discussing strategies to deal with Qinglan Urushi. While there, he somehow managed to pull out a freshly stolen, still-warm Egg of Memory.
After docking in Tokyo, the group made some quick preparations and headed straight for Yokosuka.
Sonoko tagged along, saying she wanted to see what the castle looked like.
Before leaving, Qian Jianyi separated from the group, saying he had to retrieve something.
Yokosuka wasn't too far from Tokyo.
The car wound its way up the mountain road.
From a distance, the group saw a large castle perched halfway up the mountainside.
The white castle gleamed in the sunlight, with the surrounding mountain scenery giving it a fairytale-like feel.
Another castle…
The car stopped in front of the castle, and shortly after, Dr. Agasa arrived. He was there to bring Conan his glasses and had also brought the Junior Detective League and Ai Haibara with him.
"Dr. Agasa heard that you were dealing with a spy, so he made special bulletproof glasses," Haibara said as she approached Fujino, handing him a pair. "I asked Dr. Agasa to make one for you as well."
"Bulletproof glasses, huh?"
Fujino crouched down, took the glasses, and put them on.
They weren't too thick but were indeed bulletproof.
How very Conan…
If this were in his system, it'd probably be rated blue at the very least.
Collecting his thoughts, he gave Haibara's head a playful ruffle. "Thanks, Ai."
"Ugh…"
Haibara wasn't used to the sudden affection, and her face flushed with a girlish blush.
…
Afterward, the group entered the castle.
Before heading in, Fujino reminded Haibara specifically, "Don't let the kids go inside the castle. It's going to be dangerous in there."
Haibara trusted Fujino completely and promised to do her best to stop them.
As they toured the castle, Qian Jianyi's true intentions gradually became clear.
It turned out that all the bags he brought were for stealing the treasures of the Kosaka family. But when he tried to steal them, he got caught red-handed.
Since taking him to the police wasn't convenient, Kaito Kid confiscated his tools, and the group moved on.
Following Conan's lead, they arrived at the study of Kosaka Natsumi's grandfather, Kosaka Kiichi.
In the study, Conan once again found an entrance to a tunnel.
Ran took note of all this.
Fujino stepped forward to enter the password, and the door to the basement opened.
"Fujino, how did you know the password to this basement?" Conan asked curiously.
Could it be detective's intuition?
"The Phantom Thief Kid actually gave us a hint from the start," Fujino replied, looking over at Natsumi Kosaka. "And the code Natsumi Kosaka mentioned earlier is actually the Russian title of 'The Last Wizard of the Century' – in its full form: ВОЛШЕБНИК·КОНЦА·ВЕКА."
"Fujino-senpai, you know Russian?!" Sonoko asked, surprised.
"I just know a bit," Fujino said with a smile. "I picked some up from reading Russian books in the past."
The group then descended into the secret passage.
As they walked through the dark tunnel, Kogoro Mouri, Ran, and Conan took the lead, while Fujino and Kaito Kid followed behind.
At some point, art dealer Qian Jianyi and Qinglan Urushi vanished.
Fujino noticed this, nudged Kaito Kid disguised as Shiratori, and whispered, "They're gone."
Kaito Kid looked around and noticed the same thing.
Both of them slowed their pace, disappearing into the darkness…
