Chapter 15: Fierce Battle (1)
The kobold army marched slowly.
Slowly, but steadily, they closed the distance between them and the city walls.
The faces of the conscripts, who had cheered at the sight of the army summoned by the Yoo-seong, now looked fearful and nervous.
As they closed the distance, the kobolds’ forces became more clearly visible.
The bright moonlight was both a blessing and a curse.
It was a good thing that they could see their enemies relatively clearly, and a bad thing that it frightened the conscripts.
But they were enemies to be fought anyway, so the brighter side was much better.
The distance continued to close.
Yoo-seong studied the creatures in the moonlight.
They were kobolds, monsters, but they wore clothes and used tools.
They didn’t have full-scale siege equipment like siege towers or catapults, but they had the basics.
There were several in the front ranks with large ladders and grappling hooks.
Since they were basically agile kobolds, it was clear that if a ladder or hook was placed on them, they would be able to climb the wall much faster than humans.
In between the normal kobolds, there were several giant kobolds with large bodies.
Several had javelins strapped to their backs, and some carried large bows.
Yoo-seong couldn’t see the rear of the army clearly, as if they were under some sort of enchantment, but he could feel that that’s where their core power lies.
The Prince of Kobolds is right there.
“Here he comes.”
Yoo-seong said.
And in that moment, the air on the battlefield changed.
The kobolds who had been walking suddenly began to run, shouting.
“They’re coming! They’re coming!”
Someone shouted.
The conscripts on the ramparts shuddered, uncontained fear spreading like a plague.
Sir Simone and Lord Mont sensed the mood.
Each raised his sword high, trying to rally the conscripts, but it was no use.
“Hmph!”
“Thump!”
The kobolds’ howls pounded the walls.
The monster’s roar struck fear into the hearts of the men.
‘Flee. Let’s run. If we stay here, we’ll all die.’
If it weren’t for the walls, there would already be dozens of escapees.
Indeed, there have been a few who have begun to cower and backtrack on the walls.
Baron Latus opened his mouth to speak up, but his wounds prevented him from saying much.
Even though it was a defensive battle, it seemed as if the battle was lost before it was even fought.
-Thud!
At that moment, Kate stamped the ground with her flag.
Over the roar of the onrushing monsters, she shouted over the chaos of fear and confusion.
“Glory to Camelot!”
Pah-!
Clear and pure, it was like a heavenly voice.
A brilliant golden glow emanated from Kate’s hand and enveloped the ramparts, igniting a small spark of courage in the eyes of the fearful and terrified conscripts.
Those who had retreated took another step forward.
Those who seemed on the verge of tears gritted their teeth and glared at the kobolds.
“We must fight back! We must fight back!”
“Ugh…Ugh!”
“Oooooh!”
“Fight back!”
Kate’s shout was echoed by someone on the ramparts.
Soon, everyone on the ramparts was shouting over and over again, trying to shake off their fears and rally the troops.
“What a mess.”
Vanadain said, frowning.
But his lips curled into the tiniest of smiles.
“Vanadain.”
Vanadain nodded at the Yoo-seong’s call and drew his bow.
As always, one of the kobolds running in front, carrying the banner, was struck by an arrow and fell to the ground, and in that moment, morale on the ramparts reached a new high.
“Whoa!”
“Shoot! Shoot! Kill them!”
“Shoot!”
The last shout belonged to Sir Simone.
There were only four ballistae installed atop the walls, but they were manned by trained regular soldiers rather than conscripts.
-Papapapap!
Huge arrows from the ballistae rained down on the kobolds’ heads.
Yoo-seong’s archers, along with Vanadain, kept up a steady stream of arrows.
“They’re coming! They’re coming!”
“Kick! Kick! Kick!”
Most of the arrows hit, but there were too few of them to kill them all, and too many of them at the same time.
Trampling over the dying, the kobolds finally reached the ramparts.
They began to clamber up the ladder, and they looked like demons.
“Take the ladder away! Push it away!”
-Bang, bang, bang, bang!
Several ladders were pushed back, sending the climbing kobolds crashing to the ground, and at the same time, several conscripts standing in the front rows of the ramparts were knocked back by javelins.
“Ugh, ouch!”
“Block! Block!”
“Thump! Thump!”
It was death and destruction in earnest.
“Vanadain, snipe!”
Yoo-seong shouted as he slashed through the kobolds climbing the ladder, and Vanadain fired arrows at the javelin-wielding kobolds.
“Keek! Keek!”
The javelin-wielding kobolds were not many in number.
As he took them down one at a time, the number of flying javelins dropped noticeably.
However, few on the ramparts noticed that it was a terrible battle.
There was little organization on either the attacking or defending side.
But all the while, Yoo-seong had the entire battlefield in his mind.
He saw what he could see, inferred and imagined what he couldn’t see, and perceived the whole picture.
It was almost instinctive behavior.
And because of that, only Yoo-seong knew what was going to happen next.
-Quang!
It was a loud boom that cut through the din.
A huge, ground-pounding behemoth rose up, almost flying, casting a black shadow over the city walls.
“Aaaah!”
The screams of the terrified conscripts were short-lived.
For with another thud, the shadow’s master landed on the ramparts.
“Hmph!”
The great kobold-an enormous creature that stood at least five meters tall-roared and swung his club, causing terrible carnage.
Conscripts within range had their heads blown off, their chests crushed, and their backs snapped.
The screams and howls rose again as the figure roared among the bloodshed.
And then Yoo-seong charged.
The roaring one saw Yoo-seong coming straight for him, and at that moment, Vanadain pulled his bow.
-Pot!
“Crack!”
The giant kobold screamed as Vanadain’s arrow pierced his eyeball.
And at that moment, Yoo-seong kept running.
He focused his attention on the screaming, writhing creature and concentrated.
He used a power he hadn’t used before-no, hadn’t been able to use before.
His heart pounded but it was different than before.
Power surged through him, following the beat of his heart.
Level 5.
Fantasy Monarch knights are able to release the magic within their bodies to the outside world.
They would be able to manifest the aura blade, the symbol of chivalry and knighthood.
Of course, this was still a rudimentary level.
A level 5 knight’s aura blade was nothing more than a little bit of magic on his sword.
In fact, Robin, a quasi-knight, was still unable to create a proper aura blade.
Yoo-seong, however, was different as a golden blade had been added to the longsword in his grip.
Corrected by Legion combat power and compensated for by the value of virtue, the overlapping corrections strengthened Yoo-seong soul and magic.
Just as Yoo-seong’s physical abilities were comparable to those of a level 10 knight, so too was his magical power, even though he was only level 5.
The burning golden blade glowed brightly in the moonlight.
‘Two steps.’
Yoo-seong measured the distance.
The creature’s movements, writhing in pain from the loss of his eyes, were wild and jerky, but that was all.
Yoo-seong would not allow a blind attack.
He stopped breathing and lowered his upper body to dodge the club and close the distance even further.
His lower body is all I can see.
Yoo-seong swung his sword at the pillar-like calf.
“Crack!”
It wasn’t an amputation but it did cut muscle and broke the bone.
The moment Yoo-seong passed by, he lost his balance and fell to the ground but Yoo-seong didn’t stop.
He turned around and charged forward, simultaneously throwing the sword he was holding with both hands behind his head.
The soldiers saw Yoo-seong and the kobolds, startled by the sound of the giant kobold’s collapsing, saw him too.
He swung his sword up and down as a thunderbolt of blows rained down on the giant kobold’s neck.
-Thud!
The severed head fell to the ground.
Blood gushed from the headless creature’s neck like a fountain, and the surrounding soldiers cheered.
“Woah!”
“Golden Knight!”
“Dark Knight!”
The incoherent chanting and cheering erupted in unison.
A smile spread across Vanadain’s face as he clenched his fists.
Yoo-seong was happy too and a thrill of accomplishment ran through him.
But instead of raising his sword to celebrate, he quickly turned around.
At that moment, a tremendous boom and vibration shook the entire city wall.
Boom!
It was the gate.
While the skinny, tall, giant kobold stood atop the wall, another one, a muscular, giant kobold with an abnormally developed upper body, was pounding on the gate with a hammer.
As it was intended from the beginning, there was a considerable distance between the landing point of the giant kobold that Yoo-seong had brought down and the castle gate.
-Quang!
The walls shook again and Yoo-seong decided that the gates cannot be guarded.
It will break down soon.
Then we must prepare for the aftermath.
Yoo-seong turned and ran.
On the other side of the ramparts, he threw his upper body out and shouted at the ground.
“Light Cavalry, rally!”
-Tsk!
With a flash of gold, the light troops, led by Diana, appeared.
“Orders.”
Diana looked up at Yoo-seong and spoke briefly, and Yoo-seong pointed towards the gate and shouted.
“Charge!”
I understood.
And at that moment, the gates were smashed down.
-Quang!
The kobolds roared as the crumpled iron gate flew off the wall, and the giant kobold who had broken the gate strode into the castle with a triumphant look on his face.
And so did Diana.
She turned her horse toward the main street, not the gate.
She drew her spear, clutched it tightly to her side, and turned around to face the gate.
The giant kobold saw her.
Diana looked at the giant kobold, too, and gave a small, short, but clear command.
“Charge.”
Enika ran.
The light cavalry in a wedge formation behind her began to run as well.
It was no simple charge.
Diana’s chivalry affected not only her, but the entire cavalry.
It was as if the entire cavalry had become a spear.
-Boom!
Suddenly, a giant spear sliced through space.
With an explosive acceleration, it quickly closed the distance between it and the kobold, and Diana’s spear tip shot toward the kobold that didn’t dodge.
-Kwagaga!
An unimaginable roar erupted from the tip of the lance.
This was no ordinary lance charge.
Even Yoo-seong, hanging on the ramparts, watching the moment of impact, widened his eyes at the unimaginable sight.
And he could see the giant kobold with its upper body obliterated, its lower body left standing, and the kobolds scattered in fragments.
Diana’s Shock was a charge attack that sent a powerful shockwave forward.
The area around the shattered gate is covered in kobold blood and bits of meat.
Those on the ramparts could only hear a roar, unable to comprehend what had happened, but it was not the same for the kobolds beyond the gate.
Even the kobolds who had been charging furiously stopped and stared blankly at the gate, at the shattered kobolds, and at Diana, who remained silent.
“Stand down.”
Speaking softly amidst the stares, Diana turned her horse with the light cavalry and headed back to the main street.
Diana’s Shock was a formidable chivalry, to be sure, but she needed the distance to charge her lance, and it would be a waste for the light cavalry to fight the enemy in the first place.
So the gates opened again but this time there were others who moved besides Yoo-seong.
“We must defend the gates! Pile up the goods!”
It was Lord Mont.
He appeared with his men, whom Baron Latus had raised with great care, and began to mobilize his conscripts to pile all sorts of things in front of the gates.
At first, the kobolds stared at the scene in disbelief, but then they realized what was happening and began to push through the gates.
“Kate! Vanadain! Rene!”
Now it was the gates rather than the walls that were the problem.
Yoo-seong’s repeated shouts caused the scattered fighters to look back at him.
Yoo-seong led them down the ramparts.
The kobolds leapt over the scattered rubble and charged the soldiers.
It was a struggle.
Yoo-seong rode with the knights toward a defensive line that looked like it might be breached at any moment.
And that’s why he didn’t see it.
The black, dense fog at the edge of the kobold horde was moving, and something was breaking through it, galloping straight for the gates!
“It just-”
That was it.
Lord Mont was dead, unaware that he was dying.
The same was true of the men under his command.
The massive axe wielded by the creature that had appeared in the black mist split everything in its path.
The walls, the kobolds, the soldiers, Lord Mont.
Everything that lay within the clear path of the great axe crumbled and fell.
Lord Mont’s body fell to the ground in a heap, his mouth still open as he cried out, and blood gushed simultaneously from the soldiers’ and Lord Mont’s severed bodies.
The black fog dispersed with blood, wind, and loud noise.
Standing with a huge scythe was a giant kobold, over three meters tall.
It wasn’t just its size.
The violet armor that covered his entire body and the scythe in his hand were no ordinary objects.
These were the wonders of the kobold gods.
I knew it the moment I saw him.
He was the kobold prince, a high priest of the kobold gods and a great warrior.
A being with the divine blood of that kobold god, who had fallen and declined but retains its divinity.
The kobold prince smiled and turned away.
He smiled wickedly at the Yoo-seong and the knights who had rushed from beneath the ramparts, instinctively stopping when they saw him.
