Chapter 21: Guerilla Warfare (1)
Outside the office.
Those facing the summoned forces of Camelot in the inner courtyard could not suppress their admiration.
For Sir Rant and Iserina, who were seeing Yoo-seong Chivalry for the first time, the sight was overwhelming to the point of disorientation. Even Robin and Sir Simon, who had seen them before, looked visibly astonished.
“Wow.”
Even René was surprised, which was only natural. The forces of Camelot had changed in appearance compared to before.
Gone were the raggedly clothed serf troops wielding repurposed farming tools as weapons, standing haphazardly.
In their place stood a unified force, all dressed in standardized uniforms and equipped with matching gear.
The regular infantry presented an imposing sight, lined up in orderly rows and columns, holding long spears.
Even the archer units, though only adorned with a feathered beret as an additional accessory, looked markedly different. Whereas the previous archers had merely seemed like a functional group, the current ones gave off the air of a specialized unit.
Then there was the light cavalry.
Though their appearance hadn’t changed much, their numbers had increased.
Seeing ten cavalrymen on horseback exuded a reassuring sense of strength just by their presence.
And this wasn’t all.
Before each unit stood their captains:
A golden-haired woman reminiscent of the sun, an elven knight, and a sturdy female knight who, though plainer compared to the first two, exuded the charm of a dignified beauty.
Particularly Kate and Vanadain, who had received promotions along with their units, appeared even more dazzling due to their upgraded attire. Their remarkable looks seemed so heightened that they appeared as figures straight out of legend or myth.
‘Indeed, clothes make the person.’
Of course, the wearers themselves were already exceptional.
“For the glory of Camelot.”
“For the glory of Camelot.”
Led by Kate, the forces of Camelot saluted Yoo-seong.
Though they didn’t shout, the synchronized salute of over sixty soldiers was a grand and stirring spectacle.
“For the glory of Camelot.”
When Yoo-seong managed to suppress a smile and returned the salute, Kate flashed a benevolent smile at him before nodding and disappearing into light alongside the forces.
“Wooooow…”
Iserina let out an instinctive exclamation as she watched the forces of Camelot vanish together in a radiant display.
The sight of Kate and Vanadain gradually fading amid the soft glow was breathtakingly beautiful.
Naturally, the reactions of others were similar.
Robin and Edgar wore blissful expressions, beaming with smiles. Sir Rant, forgetting his composure, repeatedly gasped in amazement like a child.
The only one with a slightly different reaction was René, who, evidently pleased by everyone’s admiration of Yoo-seong’s chivalry, smirked and shrugged her shoulders proudly.
After some time passed, when the forces had completely disappeared, Yoo-seong turned to the still-enchanted Iserina and Sir Rant. Smiling, he said:
“This is my chivalry.”
Yoo-seong’s Chivalry.
The ability to summon the forces of Camelot.
Sir Rant and Iserina snapped out of their daze, nodding reflexively at Yoo-seong’s declaration.
Witnessing Yoo-seong’s chivalry made many things suddenly make sense to them:
How they had achieved victory during the defensive battle.
Why the lord had insisted on guerrilla warfare.
Why Baron Latus had entrusted Lothian to an unfamiliar man.
‘The knight who felled the Kobold Prince.’
Iserina recalled the rumors she had heard while fleeing to Lothian:
-The Black Knight of Lothian.
-The knight who cut through Kobolds as if they were straw.
-The holy knight of the sun, who defeated the Kobold Prince with a golden sword.
Those stories weren’t exaggerations.
It seemed entirely plausible when it came to the man before her.
Iserina, who didn’t know much about knights, had never even heard of a knight with such chivalry as the lord of Lothian—Yoo-seong.
‘This kind of chivalry is possible?’
‘Such chivalry exists in this world?’
The green monsters that had taken Volano—the swamp trolls—were a living nightmare for Iserina.
Just the thought of them made her body tremble with fear.
Because of this, she hadn’t entertained much hope while fleeing to Lothian.
She had merely run to survive.
When talking about Volano’s fall, it was the same.
Though she hadn’t voiced it, she believed Lothian would eventually suffer the same fate but now her thoughts changed.
If it was this man before her, it might be possible.
He could defeat the trolls—her father’s and Volano’s nemesis.
Her heart raced.
Her emotions welled up, and she felt tears threatening to spill.
Yoo-seong looked at Iserina and could roughly guess her thoughts.
However, instead of offering comforting or encouraging words, he spoke about what was immediately necessary.
Time wasn’t on their side.
“We don’t need many for guerrilla warfare. René and I will handle it.”
At Yoo-seong’s words, Sir Rant immediately nodded.
A knight with the ability to summon an army—what could be better suited for guerrilla warfare?
‘Honestly, the more I think about it, the more of a cheat it seems.’
If the enemy had eyes, they would notice if an army moved.
But a single knight?
That was hard to track.
And if Yoo-seong decided to infiltrate, he could penetrate deep into enemy lines.
Then what happened next was even more astonishing.
Normally, a single knight infiltrating enemy lines wouldn’t achieve much.
But Yoo-seong was different.
After infiltrating, he could summon an army.
To the enemy, it would seem as if an army had teleported into their main camp or rear lines.
‘No supply issues either.’
Contrary to what many who were unfamiliar with military operations might think, an army couldn’t move without proper supplies.
Maintaining supply lines was far more challenging than it appeared.
Feeding an army required a lot of food.
Transporting that food required vehicles and personnel.
Protecting those supply convoys required defensive forces.
But none of this was necessary for Yoo-seong’s chivalry.
He just needed enough food for himself.
Maintaining supply lines?
Who needed that?
A few days’ worth of food for his horse was enough.
Of course, even the horse needed to eat, and traveling on horseback might make him more noticeable, but—
“And one more thing. Alphonse.”
At Yoo-seong’s low voice, a powerful-looking black warhorse appeared beside him.
Seeing the jet-black steed for the first time, René widened her eyes and asked,
“Heir, is that horse part of your chivalry too?”
“It’s a new addition.”
When Yoo-seong grinned, the black warhorse, Alphonse, looked at René and smiled.
“He looks smart. And handsome too.”
As if understanding René’s compliment, Alphonse puffed up with pride and leaned his head toward her, as if asking to be petted.
“May I touch him?”
“Go ahead.”
With Yoo-seong’s permission, René gently patted Alphonse’s head. The horse, seemingly pleased, rubbed its head against René’s face and chest. Yoo-seong let out a bitter laugh.
‘Is it because he’s male? He sure seems to like beautiful women.’
Still, Yoo-seong was satisfied that Alphonse seemed to like René, and René chuckled as she patted the horse’s head a few more times.
Watching all this, Sir Rant thought to himself:
‘He even has a horse.’
This meant he could summon a horse, effectively eliminating even the minor drawbacks Sir Rant had considered.
“Sir Simon, I leave Lothian to you. Focus on both repairing the walls and training the conscripted soldiers.”
“I will do so.”
At Yoo-seong’s words, Sir Simon replied with a serious expression.
Yoo-seong then called Robin and Edgar closer and spoke in a low voice.
“Robin, Edgar. I’m sure you both want to join the mission.”
At his words, Robin and Edgar’s eyes lit up, with Robin even nodding eagerly.
But Yoo-seong smiled bitterly and said,
“I’m sorry, but I need you two to stay in Lothian. While Sir Simon is trustworthy, he’s not fully ‘my man’ yet. So you two need to remain here.”
In truth, moving with just René was more advantageous in terms of mobility and other aspects than bringing Robin and Edgar along. But what Yoo-seong said wasn’t entirely fabricated either.
René was unquestionably one of his own while Robin and Edgar were René’s people.
Since Yoo-seong himself would be leaving the castle, it was essential to leave reliable individuals behind.
Upon hearing his explanation, Robin and Edgar nodded with deeply moved expressions.
They seemed touched that Yoo-seong considered them his people.
For them, Yoo-seong wasn’t merely a descendant of Camelot who had suddenly appeared; he was the savior chosen by the Lady of the Lake to overcome this dark era.
Moreover, he had proven this during the defense of Lothian, defeating the Kobold Prince in the decisive battle.
‘Though, strictly speaking, both of them are still technically vassals of Count Baltois…’
Still, how should I put it?
Now that René had firmly become one of Yoo-seong’s own, it felt natural for the other two to also fall under his command.
After convincing the two, Yoo-seong called Sir Simon aside and spoke in a low voice.
“I can only entrust the castle to you, Sir Simon. When Baron Latus entrusted me with Lothian, he also told me to rely on and trust you.”
At Yoo-seong’s words, Sir Simon pressed his lips together and his eyes grew misty.
He couldn’t help but think of Baron Latus.
Though Baron Latus hadn’t directly spoken about him, Yoo-seong thought that if there had been more time, the baron would have undoubtedly mentioned Sir Simon.
After all, what’s good is good, as they say.
“I leave Lothian in your hands.”
“Yes, my lord.”
Close to him, Sir Simon’s words carried a respectful tone.
While Yoo-seong himself felt uncomfortable dropping formalities with Sir Simon, who was much older than him, his use of respectful speech seemed to take on a different meaning for Sir Simon.
The knight’s eyes now gleamed with even greater resolve to pledge unwavering loyalty.
Satisfied with Sir Simon’s demeanor, Yoo-seong turned to address everyone again.
“As soon as the food is prepared, we’ll set out immediately. René, get ready and return.”
“Yes, heir.”
René, who answered without hesitation, quickly set off somewhere.
In the meantime, Yoo-seong unfolded a map of the Volano region and confirmed the geography with Iserina, Sir Simon, and others.
About ten minutes later, René returned with a single backpack strapped to her back.
Seeing her, Yoo-seong immediately summoned Alphonse.
“Then I’ll be on my way. Until I send word, fortify the castle and prepare to mobilize at any time.”
“It will be done,” Sir Simon replied firmly.
Yoo-seong then turned to Iserina.
“Lady Iserina, I’ll be off.”
“I pray for your success.”
As Iserina offered her respectful blessings, Yoo-seong returned the gesture with equal respect before speaking to René, who stood behind him.
“Hold on tight.”
“Yes, heir!”
As René tightly wrapped her arms around Yoo-seong’s waist, even resting her head against him, Yoo-seong chuckled softly and immediately set off on Alphonse.
Their destination: Volano.
Specifically, the Barony of Volano.
