I Became an Academy Counselor

Chapter 5 - A Scam

After tucking in the sleeping Orca on the bed, I smiled.
I had been wondering what method to use to get the students to talk about me.
Thanks to her sudden appearance, all my worries were resolved.
I never thought I’d be able to interact with a playable character like this.
It was an unexpected catch.

“Looks like there’s not much time left until the prologue.”

I was certain after seeing how the class president treated Orca.
Knowing she’s demon-possessed and experiences first hand her bad personality, she still chases after her out of duty as a classmate.
It’s exactly how it looks just before the prologue begins.

The class president’s attitude towards Orca is divided into three stages.
First, the time described in flashbacks when she enthusiastically tried to rehabilitate Orca.
This had already passed. The appearance I just saw was far from passionate.
And now, she’s aware that Orca is dangerous, but hasn’t actually seen how dangerous she is.

She sets aside her prejudice about demon-possessed people being dangerous, but she is starting to feel that Orca herself is dangerous.
It’s a period when she follows Orca out of duty, thinking that if she leaves her alone, who knows what might happen.
…Lastly, her appearance after the prologue ends. This is the class president that users mostly see. She realizes why people fear demon-possessed individuals, and while feeling afraid of herself, she still approaches Orca out of duty. Orca would often mock such a class president, saying she’s no different from others…
But the fact that she’s one of the few NPCs who can interact with Orca shows how stubborn the class president’s personality is.

“Well then…”

The very act of hypnotizing someone felt like controlling people at my own will, which I was reluctant to do.
That’s why I didn’t hypnotize Orca as soon as I met her.
What I liked was an Orca who had overcome her past pain on her own, not an Orca who was forced to be happy through hypnosis.
Even if I solved the problem with hypnosis, what if it is broken due to some incident in the future?

In the end, there would only be a person who hasn’t developed, still trapped in the past.
So I wanted to use hypnosis only as a tool to make it a little easier to approach the students.
However, exceptions always exist.
Some beings must be restricted through hypnosis no matter what.

“It’s about time she comes out…”

So I had put four hypnotic suggestions on Orca.
A suggestion that she wouldn’t see any drinks other than the tea I made.
A suggestion that her thirst would intensify the more she looked at the tea.
And a suggestion that she would fall into a deep sleep, relaxing all tension, the moment she drank the tea.
The fourth suggestion… I’ll talk about that later.

Fortunately, Orca didn’t seem to notice any discomfort from the hypnosis I put on her…
But that made me feel even more sorry for her.
She must have had a brief blackout, but the fact that she didn’t even notice the discomfort means she must often experience such blackouts in her daily life.
She should be getting good sleep. Knowing the reason why she couldn’t let go of her tension, I gently stroked her head as she slept soundly.
And perhaps because she felt that touch? I met her eyes as she opened them.
Not red eyes, but black ones.

“Die…”
“Stop.”
“?!”
“You can’t move from now on. You can move… Yes, let’s say after I give permission.”
“What is this…! What did you do! Release this right now! If you don’t, I’ll kill you!”
“Haha, I’m sorry. That’s impossible.”

Realizing that her body wasn’t moving as she wished even though it wasn’t tied up, she shouted at me to release her immediately.
But I didn’t yield to her threats.
No, I ignored them.

“You’re planning to kill me even if I release you, right?”
“Grrrrr…! Release me now!”
“Seeing that you’re not denying it, I guess I’m right.”

The reason Orca suffers from insomnia is because a demon resides in her body.
She never lets go of her tension, always trying to suppress it even while sleeping, in case she felt signs of the demon trying to emerge.
If she lost control of her body, it would be a big problem.
…Naturally, the demon inside her body wants to destroy and ruin the world.
So it tries to take over her body when she relaxes or falls asleep.
The result is Orca’s insomnia.

The demon tries to seize her body day and night to possess it.
To prevent this, Orca can’t sleep properly.
It’s been going on for who knows how many years, to the point where there’s even a setting where she still suffers from insomnia years after the game ends.

“Come on, even if it’s a demon, shouldn’t it let her sleep?”
“Die, die, die, die, die, die…!”
“…Sigh.”

Instead of answering my words, she was busy getting irritated, demanding that I release this strange spell.
Even though she would try to kill me immediately if I released the hypnosis.
It’s obvious that a weak person like me wouldn’t be able to react to her attack the moment I release the hypnosis, right?
I had no confidence in winning unless I put her under my hypnosis to prevent her from doing anything as soon as she came out like this.

“Alright, I’ll release you.”
“Really?! Ha, that’s great! Looks like you got tired of using your strange magic! As a reward, I’ll tear your body apart as painfully as possible!”
“But there’s one condition.”
“…Condition?”
“Yes, a contract. Can you listen?”

Demons have two main characteristics.
They must fulfill contracts.
And they can’t lie.
The demon possessing Orca’s body, who knew this better than anyone, immediately calmed down and said to me.

“…What’s the content of the contract?”
“It’s not that difficult. If you’re released, you’ll have a simple bet with me. That’s all.”
“…Really?”
“Of course.”

She looks suspicious.
Well, I guess it would be confusing for someone who was suppressing a demon to offer to release them with just a simple contract.
But feeling like she had no other choice, she soon nodded.

“Fine. The contract is established. What’s the content of the bet?”
“Hmm, let’s see. How about we take turns doing one good deed and one bad deed, and then decide which one feels better?”
“…Are you serious?”
“I am serious. Um, how about the loser follows the winner’s words for life?”
“What are you thinking? Fine, it’s not that difficult.”

With those words, the demon suddenly smashed my laptop on the desk and scattered it on the floor. Then she carefully picked up a few pieces and put them in the trash can.

“The contract is over, you fool. You didn’t specify the size of the good and bad deeds. I’ll listen to your last words.”

…My laptop.
I had so many games installed on it…
Tears welled up in my eyes from the unfairness.
You bastard. As expected, you have a demon’s wickedness.
To soothe this grief, I decided to play a little mischief.

“…The contract isn’t over yet, Haze.”
“You, how do you know my name…?!”

Is she shocked that I know her name?
Haze glared at me in astonishment.
Well, it’s understandable.

Even if someone who doesn’t know a demon’s identity kills a demon-possessed person, the demon doesn’t die.
Then how can you kill a demon?
It’s by finding out the demon’s name. If you kill the possessed person after learning the name, the main body also perishes. Naturally, demons are very wary of people who know their names.
So it must be shocking for her to suddenly hear a human in front of her call her name.
…Well, I have no intention of killing Orca at all.
It’s an unnecessary worry.

“That doesn’t matter, does it? Just answer about the contract content.”
“Knowing a demon’s name, and you’re only doing this? You…! What are you?!”
“If you answer about the contract content, I might tell you?”
“…The good deed felt better! There, happy?! Now answer my question… Huh?”

Got you.
I smiled a victory smile.

“Looks like I won.”
“W-Wait. What was that just now? That’s wrong. I clearly said the good deed felt better… Wait. Something’s not right…”
“Demons can’t lie, right?”
“…!”

Haze seemed to have noticed as she finally saw my smile.
That I had played some trick.

“You, you…! What did you do…!”
“Hey, I didn’t do anything to Haze?”

That’s right. I didn’t do anything.
To Haze.
I only hypnotized Orca, after all.
…The fourth hypnotic suggestion I put on her was that she would feel immense happiness when doing good deeds.

Of course, hypnosis put on one person can’t affect others…
But it’s different if two people are using the same body.
They’re using the same brain.
It’s bound to have some influence.

“Well then… Shall we exercise the winner’s rights?”
“W-Wait a minute. Can’t we talk…”
“How about we prohibit you from doing evil deeds for the rest of your life until you perish?”
“You, youuuuu…!”

The contract was established.
Just as I wanted.
