chapter 15
15 – Joint Class-4
For a moment, Claire thought it was all over.
There was no room for excuses. She had attacked Wade.
She had prayed that her dark arrows would miss, but the prayer was futile.
Claire’s magic struck his body and he staggered for a moment.
No!
This is not what she wanted.
Damn it…
Wade was hurt. The strong metallic scent of blood stung her nostrils.
This, this…
But she was flustered. She lost control of her body.
People who think they have made mistakes, caused tragedies with their own actions generally lose physical strength.
As humans, it is natural to react this way.
If the problem has arisen because of a person’s wrong actions, they can’t help but think they can prevent the problem from spreading by doing nothing.
But now, Claire’s body was not her own. Her head, emotions, heart, arms, magic, everything was consumed.
Ah, ah, ah, ahhh!!!
Dozens of blood-red dark arrows, created using her life as fuel, were rising.
All these arrows were launched, all targeted at Wade.
Ah, no. Run, quickly!!!
The last shred of sanity moved Claire’s lips, but she already knew.
There’s nothing she could do. She had no choice but to kill. She had to, she had to kill Wade.
Her first friend at the academy, who was a bit blunt, but earnestly considered her future.
She had to kill him, with her own hands, with her own magic.
Ahhhhh!!!
She screamed. Among the sorrow, a mix of anger and desperate cries spewed from her, like a giant beast.
She couldn’t resist. She had to admit it. Surrender was her only choice.
If she knew it was this power, she would never have given it a second glance from the start.
She regretted and regretted, but she had no choice left.
She struggled with sorrow that she had ruined everything, with emotions that she should not have followed in the first place.
Uuurrgh…
The monster growled low.
A sense of absolute despair and powerlessness tore deep into Claire’s heart.
With difficulty, she opened her eyes and looked at Wade, who was supposed to be no more than a residual shadow.
You held up well.
But he was standing there, perfectly fine.
Huh?
Claire’s reason felt hope. She felt joy that he was still alive.
But her body and magic, consumed with the monster’s anger, felt anger and hatred that the creature was still alive.
Ugh, ahhhhh!!!
Dark arrows were created again. Again, powerful magic that could tear a person apart is pouring towards him.
…
But without a word, he was striding towards where Claire was.
The darkness arrow that hit his body disappeared as quickly as a snowflake melting upon being touched.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!!!”
Claire cried out in a voice mixed with despair, but the magic consuming her body had no sympathy for her cry.
She merely unleashed the only dark spell she knew, the arrow of darkness, as if it was the next natural step.
Her magic writhed with anger, attempting to kill him, but Wade had no intention of being fazed.
He would naturally deflect hundreds, no, thousands of arrows of darkness without a blink.
“Ah.”
He had reached right before Claire’s eyes.
Rather…
He must be angry. After all, she tried to kill him without any explanation.
Or, he might think it’s all too late.
He might think of her as a person who can’t think or make sound judgments, consumed and eroded by the demon’s magic. Thinking she couldn’t be saved anymore.
Claire thought the same.
But now… If this is the case, she is going to-
Die.
Claire accepted this painfully inevitable fact.
She could meet her lonely death without causing harm to others.
It’s over…
“You’ve worked hard.”
“Huh?”
But Wade, who had come right up to her, didn’t try to kill Claire. He only hugged her.
Even now, Claire’s body was firing arrows of darkness, but other than his initial wound, he wasn’t hurt at all.
Ah… Ah!
Joy seeped into Claire’s head.
A strong sense of helplessness and despair of having no choices slowly turned into hope and happiness.
She couldn’t harm him no matter what she did. There was no need for her to make a choice with her fragile mind.
Warm… It’s warm.
It was a night of pouring rain. Only after feeling his warmth did Claire realize how intensely cold her body was.
She didn’t have to do anything. Nothing at all…
Claire, exhausted, leaned into him as if collapsing.
With a faint smile on her lips.
/////
“Really, how long can you endure it?”
Claire might not understand, but by my standards, what she did was a feat.
“Maintaining reason in front of that monster, even as a novice black magician.”
At least up until the very end, her spirit lived on.
I looked at the monster before me.
Its massive size, solid waist, a tail bigger than a gigantic tree, and a large mouth.
And the vicious magic flowing through its body revealed its true identity.
“Behemoth…”
Small. A word that did not coincide with its size, but it was not fully grown yet.
When it grows up, it will be as big as this mountain, not a tree or a stone. It must have been born not long ago.
However, its ferocity and magic were real.
Driven by instinct, it scatters violence and anger, appetite and greed.
Even without its huge size, it was as if a nightmare to the dark magician.
“Magic erosion…”
Magic succumbs to power.
Even if you’re a strong-minded dark magician, you have no choice but to kneel in front of a being with stronger magic than you.
“Rather, it was fortunate that he was weak.”
If the magic of the dark magician surpassed the Behemoth, making them capable of subduing that monster, their strength was meaningless.
It would only become a chain that strangles them even more painfully. The stronger the dark magician, the more control they lose.
Considering that, Claire’s resistance was extraordinarily high.
Her eyes shook as she fired darkness arrows at me. Her small magic could not fully rob her of her sanity.
I had to be hit by the first arrow, but the wound was not deep. From the next arrow process, I could block everything simply by extending a magic shield.
“But, I think I need to find a way…”
Her body had already reached its limit. She’s already down, but it wouldn’t be strange if she died of hypothermia considering this storm.
“I wish the princess would come.”
By now, Ulisia and Xenia must have noticed our absence.
However, we could not just wait.
“Grrr…”
It picked up on my condition.
I’m not stronger than it. My power source was a fragment of the void, not an actual demon lord.
But, I am not controlled by it. The indomitable spirit assisted me in fully utilizing my power in front of this huge beast.
“There’s no choice.”
It’s big and, surprisingly for its size, fast.
The moment I show my back and run away, I will become its prey.
If Behemoth chases through the forest without any resistance, I can never escape from it.
“You used a pretty interesting card… Katarine.”
This is far too big a gamble just to kill me. She must have left it in its egg form on this mountain, but it’s still too much.
This monster raises a heavy storm and causes a large-scale magic thunderstorm, incapacitating communications just by living and breathing.
“A trick to kill the princess… Was that a deception?”
There are numerous powers within the academy. Among them are the gatherings of dark magicians working towards the world’s destruction.
Although they are an organization that must not come forward yet, it would not be impossible for Katarine to use their plan and bring it forward a little.
“RaaaH!!!”
“I get it, okay.”
It had realized that I was neither friend nor foe despite carrying its magic.
I felt it recognize me as an alien existence, neither to be controlled nor to control.
I couldn’t wait for salvation. First, I had to handle it alone.
I still don’t know many black magics. But here I can freely expend my infinite magic unrestrained.
“Let’s do this.”
Behind me, countless dark arrows surged.
These were less arrows and more spears, and even less spears and more pillars similar to massive aggregates of magic.
Beyond the pouring rain, his pupils glowed red.
“Here I go!”
Facing his grotesque mouth and repulsive eyes, I fired the dark arrows.
