chapter 3
3 – Café and Broadcasting Station
“I’ll be back.”
“Welcome back.”
Ara and Bird exchanged kisses and stretched as they walked outside.
I’ll be graduating tomorrow.
Whether the three years were short or long, it’s inevitable to feel regretful.
*
When I arrived at school, the head of the student council and the vice principal were waiting at the entrance.
For a moment, I felt my heart stop at the sharp gaze, but the vice principal always had a sharp look, so I often misunderstood. He is actually a very nice person.
He did make me run laps around the track until I collapsed, though.
“Seonghwan, are you okay?”
“Oh, yes. I’m fine, Vice Principal. You don’t have to worry.”
“Sigh… I originally intended to discipline only the female students, but somehow, the innocent male students got caught up in it too.”
Originally, the boys were the noisy ones and the girls were quiet, but it seems that has changed as well.
After receiving the sincere apology from the vice principal, he headed towards our classroom.
The composition of the students in the other world and our class was exactly the same, with no significant changes.
The only difference was that my seat was now at the back by the window.
Considering that my original seat was right at the front in the center, it couldn’t be more different.
By the way, the atmosphere in the classroom is really sharp.
Originally, it should have been the opposite of this atmosphere, where innocent women are oppressed because of men. However, now it’s the boys who are expressing their anger.
The girls were being suppressed by that atmosphere, making indescribable expressions.
Then the class president stepped forward, and the girls gathered around, standing in a line.
“Hey, sorry!”
“Sorry!!”
With the class president leading, the girls all bowed their heads in apology.
The boys, perhaps not feeling too harshly about it, took turns lifting their heads and saying they didn’t need such a big apology.
After a while, the girls lifted their heads, wearing extremely apologetic expressions.
Then, taking a deep breath, they began to say something significant.
“W-well, we were wrong too! After school today, we’ll treat you guys to a cake!”
Cheers erupted.
The boys gathered and started making a commotion.
Usually, it would be something like burgers or whatever.
A cake is a bit unusual.
But the other boys didn’t find it strange at all.
“If we’re treating the guys, a cake is only fair.”
It’s a similar feeling, I guess?
I was baffled, so I decided to search the internet.
– Treating guys to burgers, is it okay? –
I don’t know what they like, but the girls…
You like hamburgers, don’t you?
Bribe?
N-No, no. We just did something wrong.
When you give them a hamburger or something like that, the guys in the group chat tease you.
What are you talking about?
Imagine going on a date with a guy. Want to go to a burger joint or a café?
Of course, it’s a café, geez. hahahaha.
Sigh.
What’s with this talk?
In that world over there, a free hamburger was the best gift for anyone, regardless of age or gender.
But it seems like it’s not the case here.
“In that sense, is everyone okay after school today?”
Since tomorrow is graduation, it didn’t really matter as we would be leaving before lunchtime.
Ara said she had a tight schedule today and would come in late, and even if we went to a café to grab something to eat, how much time could we spare?
We should go and get some free cake.
Since all the guys agreed to go, the girls who were actually treating them looked even more grateful.
***
“Wow… her looks are insane.”
“I still feel like a high schooler… This is crazy.”
It’s been two years since I started working part-time at a café to earn my university tuition.
As the one in charge of taking orders at a large coffee shop in the bustling area, I often saw the faces of entertainers and models, known for their looks.
I thought I had completely gotten used to it, but that wasn’t the case.
Yeah.
They’re squids.
Right now, he’s sitting by the window with other boys, but compared to that high schooler who’s sitting alone, unable to join the conversation and lost, he’s incomparable to a squid.
“Hey, get his number!”
“Are you crazy? Look at his clothes, he’s a high schooler.”
“Think about coming to the café at this hour, you stupid girl. They’re obviously kids who will graduate soon!”
“Ugh… is that so?”
Yeah.
If he’s a senior in high school, then isn’t he already an adult?
It shouldn’t matter if I ask for his number.
I confidently approached the very handsome man sitting alone in the corner.
As a staff member, he looked puzzled when I approached, but I found even that confusion cute on his handsome face.
“Excuse me… if it’s okay, could I have your number?”
“Yes? My number… why?”
“I like you.”
“Oh… I’m sorry.”
“Can I know the reason?”
The reason I was hired as a cafe part-timer within 10 seconds of the interview.
It’s all because of this face.
Compared to idols or models, I think I stand out among ordinary people.
And yet, I fail even at getting a phone number.
Even I found it hard to understand.
“I’m sorry. My sister told me never to give my number to strangers.”
“…Is that all?”
“Yes? Yes… I’m sorry.”
Unbelievable.
Just because her sister told her not to tell, she won’t tell?
Is that something a high schooler would say?
If you don’t want to tell, just say so.
It’s so absurd that I can’t even get mad.
“Excuse me. Could you stop? I’ve been watching you for a while, and you shouldn’t bother high school students.”
“Yes?”
“Don’t bother our friend and just leave.”
I was about to get angry, but there were more than a few high school girls surrounding the high school boy.
And there was a girl who seemed quite determined…
Normally, I wouldn’t let it slide, but this is a cafe where I work as a part-timer…
Hoo…
“I’m sorry.”
He bowed deeply and ran away.
***
“Sung Hwan, are you okay?”
“Uh… thanks.”
“It’s not just us who should apologize. You collapsed yesterday.”
Whether it was because I collapsed so much or not, it’s an undeniable fact.
After eating only cake, the man and the woman split up and went their separate ways.
It seems like the girls are planning to go to the PC room together.
“Sung Hwan, what do you think about the guys sticking together too?”
“Huh? Yeah… it’s okay, but where are we going?”
“Today, in front of the broadcasting station, the members of ‘Queens’ are coming. I want to go see that.”
Queens is a group that includes Ara.
Although she became extremely famous for her solo activities, she started as a group idol,
and I’ve seen news that she will continue to work simultaneously.
“Yeah? Let’s go together.”
“Uh… sure.”
It felt a bit awkward to go see my wife working,
but I didn’t have anything to do at home right away.
Since I will be watching from a distance, I won’t even have a chance to make eye contact, and tomorrow is graduation day, when will I ever get to hang out with my school friends again?
After riding the subway and passing a bus stop, we arrived at the largest broadcasting station in the country, KBG.
I heard there was a program shooting today, and this was the place.
When we arrived, the fans had already crowded the square, creating an illusion of Gwanghwamun Square.
It was hard to imagine that with so many people gathered, it was not a protest but an idol viewing.
“Wow… there are so many people again today.”
“Because it’s Queens.”
Because it’s Queens.
That one word explains everything.
It was just funny.
As we laughed bitterly, the fans seemed a bit agitated.
It seems like the “Queens” vehicle has arrived.
“Unnie!!!!!!!!!!! Love you!!!!!!!!!!”
“Noona!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Song Ah Ra noona!!!!!!!!!!!!”
The noise that filled the concert hall was deafening.
It was enough to make one dizzy.
It wasn’t just shouting with their voices, some even had megaphones.
No, there were.
They were taken away by the broadcasting station staff now, but they were there.
At that moment, a broadcasting station staff member looked in our direction, with a surprised expression on their face.
Ah, that person…
He was the manager who gave Ara a ride in his car.
He’s not a staff member of the broadcasting station…
“Seonghwan, what are you doing here?”
“Hello… I came to watch with my friends from school…”
“I see, would you like to watch from a closer place? With your friends too?”
“Um… my friends don’t know yet… that Ara and I got married.”
“Oh, they’ll find out soon enough, probably by tomorrow.”
What’s she talking about?
They’ll find out tomorrow.
“Didn’t you know there’s a rumor spreading that Ara is going to her graduation ceremony tomorrow?”
“Well, I know that, but shouldn’t she at least dress up for it?”
“Where’s the wife who dresses up for her husband’s graduation ceremony? You even crack jokes a bit, I see.”
As I looked at the cheerful manager sister and her laughter, I couldn’t help but smile wryly due to the sense of dissonance I felt from the manager sister I had seen in the other world.
“Anyway, bring your friends over this way. I’ll guide you to a closer spot.”
“You came here without Ara knowing…”
“It’s okay!! Hurry!! No, I’ll bring them, so wait here. You, the male students over there!”
Finally, the manager sister who led the male students brought us inside the broadcasting station.
“Wow… it’s my first time in a broadcasting station.”
“But who is that person? Why did they let us into the broadcasting station?”
“Are you not taking it? Just think of it as a free rice cake and eat it.”
“Can I take a picture by any chance?”
They seem more like ‘my way’ personalities than I thought.
It’s important to enjoy the things that come your way right now.
I sighed and focused my eyes on Ara, who was slowly walking towards me from outside.
