Chapter 22: Chapter 22 - One Day?
Following the female employee into the lobby, Leo arrived at a place that looked like a reception room.
The overall atmosphere of this room felt like the tower was trying to brag about how much money they had.
Although they didn't show it, Leo couldn't help but feel a little nervous since this was his first time in 21 years.
Of course, the female employee who guided him disappeared after telling him to wait a moment.
He had no choice but to enjoy a simple tea time with the snacks and drinks on the table.
'…But can I eat this?'
For a moment, Leo hesitated whether to eat it or not, but would someone say anything if he ate some snacks?
'Wow... why are these snacks so delicious?'
The savory flavor and subtle sweetness that stuck to his tongue were like a meteor shock to him, so he looked up and read that potato chips that cost 3$ a bag. Curious about how expensive they were to be this delicious, he searched on his phone and found that they weren't so expensive that he couldn't afford them, but they were quite expensive for snacks.
'...Oh, so this isn't the price for a bag, but for individual packages?'
When he opened it, there were 12 bags inside. '…Oh, shit. These guys at the Magic Tower must be crazy. They're taking half a year's worth of rent to buy snacks!'
No matter how much money they had, he couldn't forgive them for being so extravagant.
Leo thought to himself as he stuffed the snacks into his mouth before anyone else came. They were really, really, really delicious.
'What on earth did they put in it that makes it so delicious? Was there gold dust inside?'
"It's the magic pistachio powder from the botanical garden of Hwangal, a D-class gate."
Leo immediately turned his head at the voice next to his ear.
"Oh my, I'm sorry. Did I surprise you?"
Yes, damn it. The person who put the sweet candy in his ear was a middle-aged woman with slightly visible wrinkles on her forehead. Her neatly braided red hair and her eyes stood out. Judging from the robe she was wearing, she definitely looked like a magician.
"Nice to meet you, Leo."
She met his eyes with a kind smile. How should he put it, her mana wasn't racing. Her age and appearance were definitely better than a well-maintained middle-aged actress, but from the moment she had wrinkles on her face, she was way out of his age range.
"I'm Ava, the person assigned to be in charge of your registration."
It didn't matter how she knew his name. Leo just finished filling out his personal information at the counter.
"Nice to meet you."
Leo nodded lightly.
"Hehe, you said you came to register as a mage, right?"
"Yes, if I were to do it, it would be to enroll in the Magic Tower. Is that possible?"
Enrolling in the Magic Tower was a title that was considered to be on par with or even higher than the odds of winning the lottery. As mentioned earlier, since the Magic Tower was overflowing with money, they provided generous support to their members. Leo could receive living expenses before getting started, or he could get something that would be helpful to his later studies.
"Of course. We always welcome talented people."
Ava greeted Leo with a rare smile full of kindness rather than pretense. She couldn't help it because, from the moment she entered the reception room, she noticed that Leo was unusual.
'…Really, this is ridiculous.'
It was as if all the mana in the room was attached to him and trying to woo him. Absorbing the mana that has melted into nature requires a high level of concentration. The magnetization process is the same. However, it seemed that he could absorb mana while breathing and thinking as usual.
No, it must have been worse. It was clear that the mana was not entering his body but lingering outside because he was unconsciously blocking the excessive mana from being absorbed into his body.
An overwhelming talent that was indescribable. His mana flow was incomparable to that of other magicians.
'Where on earth did this genius… no, this monster come from?'
Ava observed Leo with amazement.
"Leo, can I ask you something?"
"Yes? Well, I guess."
Just watching him grow would allow her to escape from her mannerisms.
"Who taught you magic?"
In a way, this was the most important part. Magic was a subject that was almost impossible to learn on one's own or rather, something that was outside of academics and reason. There must have been someone who could be a teacher.
From that perspective, it was also incomprehensible that he had come to the Magic Tower.
For magicians, a disciple with outstanding talent is someone who can greatly help them develop their magic. While learning the same magic as them, they view and interpret it from a completely different perspective. They can even enlighten them with unique ideas that they have never imagined.
It wasn't like a wizard only looked at talent when choosing a disciple, but it's an undeniable fact that they're envious of someone with outstanding talent. If a child had that much affinity for mana, it would be normal for them to raise them alone in a place where no one would set foot.
"Uh…" Leo hesitated when Ava asked about his teacher. If he had said that the former elf queen in another world was his teacher, he might have ended up in a white house on a hill instead of a magic tower.
Even if he had made up a fictional teacher and lied, such a lie wouldn't last long among the mages who made up less than 1% of the world's population.
"...It's a secret."
So he had no choice but to just say that it was a secret.
"Oh… Then how long have you been learning magic…?" Ava wanted to know how on earth a child like that has this discipline, but it was impolite to ask him when he didn't want to tell.
"One day…?"
