chapter 7
7 – “If You Stay by My Side When I’m in Pain, I’ll Fall for You, Right?”
Warm sunshine poured down on early summer.
The path leading to the academy was filled with green trees, and in between, red and yellow flowers bloomed beautifully.
Couples walked together, laughing and chatting.
Elderly couples walked slowly, holding hands with each other.
It was a scene that truly signified the beginning of a peaceful day, but Jinhee’s heart walking on that path was unbelievably noisy.
A few days ago, the small incident that happened to her wasn’t just a small incident to her.
Yoon Jinhee
D-rank hunter of the Hunter Academy, Class 8
She mainly deals with wind-based magic spells.
E-rank hunters have slightly higher basic physical abilities than ordinary people and they use one or two low-level skills.
However, starting from D-rank hunters, they begin to possess basic physical abilities and powerful skills that are completely different from ordinary people.
Some say that D-rank hunters are true awakeners.
It means that the basic physical abilities of E-rank hunters are not much higher than those of ordinary people.
However, the peculiar and metaphysical abilities unique to awakeners far exceed the common sense of ordinary people, no matter how much they try to ignore them.
Just take Kang Jihun, who was evaluated as the weakest E-rank hunter. Didn’t he use a skill that connects space and moves at high speed?
In the old days, the strange ability described in the novel, where one could “fold the earth and run,” was manifested in an even more extraordinary and irrational form.
That’s why E-rank hunters can never be called ordinary people.
But is there a greater gap between ordinary people and E-rank hunters, or is there a greater gap between E-rank hunters and D-rank hunters?
Whether they capture one hundred or one thousand passing people and ask them, instead of answering, they would either laugh or look at them strangely and pass by.
“Isn’t there a significant gap between E-rank and D-rank hunters?”
E-rank and D-rank, D-rank and C-rank…
The difference in their abilities based on their hunter rank is so obvious that even a child who knows nothing can see it at a glance.
It’s said that the gap in abilities and skill levels based on their hunter ranks is insurmountable when it comes to aspects like combat experience and mental strength.
That’s why all hunters strive to continually train and improve their abilities to reach a higher rank.
They work tirelessly, not knowing how long it will take or how much of their potential will be realized, and they fervently pray for divine help.
“Did E-rank hunters really overwhelm D-rank hunters like me?”
Jinhee still couldn’t believe the recent incident with Jihoon.
The strange aura she felt from him.
The composure he always displayed.
It was just a moment, but it was an overwhelming presence that took her breath away.
It was clear that she had a momentary misconception.
Maybe the rumors about Jihoon defeating the E-rank gate boss or taking down ten Class-10 hunters were true.
But even if those rumors were true, it didn’t make sense for her, a D-rank hunter, to be overwhelmed by Jihoon, an E-rank hunter.
Moreover, it was “Kang Jihoon.”
The Kang Jihoon who always listened to her nagging.
The one who never dared to contradict her.
The one who playfully smacked her rear end and laughed as they walked together.
His image, from a few days ago, lingered in her mind.
“What did that guy really eat? There’s no way he could do this to me, right? What was that atmosphere? Did he acquire some new skills or something?”
Yun Jinhee was angry, confused, felt unjust, and even found herself blushing with embarrassment.
As she made her way to the academy, her mind filled with various thoughts, the one who had thrown her into confusion appeared.
Jihoon, with bright eyes, stood in front of a food truck selling hot dogs and toast, watching the chef cook.
“Um… I’ll make one for you soon, so please don’t stare at me like that.”
The chef, feeling uncomfortable under Jihoon’s gaze, spoke up.
“It’s been a while since you’ve eaten here, right?”
“Your regular student… It feels like you were just here a few days ago, and you’re calling it ‘a while.'”
Jihoon’s bright eyes resembled those of someone trying hot dogs and toast for the first time.
“Please, put a lot of cheese on it.”
“Didn’t the student used to hate things that were too greasy? I heard you used to only put ketchup on it.”
“No, not anymore. I love cheese now. Greasy food… I really wanted it.”
“Uh… huh? A student? Why are you stammering over a hot dog?”
It was a moment when Jihun thought to make a hot dog for the strangely acting Jihun today.
“Hey! Kang Jihun!”
Jinhee approached Jihun.
“Oh? Jinhee, hello! You came to buy a hot dog too?”
“What? No, I… come with me for a moment, you have something to say.”
“The hot dog hasn’t arrived yet?”
“Hot dog or whatever, come with me for now.”
Jinhee, as she was about to speak, looked into his eyes and found herself unable to speak.
“This… I felt this way back then… It’s not like he’s intimidating, but why is it so scary…”
Jihun’s expression wasn’t angry or hostile, but for some reason, Jinhee found herself unable to speak while watching his demeanor.
“The hot dog will be ready in a moment, so wait a bit. Oh, do you want one too? Oh… I’m sorry, I’m short on cash.”
“As expected… I can’t believe I’m dealing with that beggar…”
Again, she suppressed her anger and waited for the hot dog while listening to Jihun’s casual words.
“I should change seats and talk seriously. He keeps creeping up on my oldest son complex. I have to make him realize again.”
Jihun, who used to wag his tail whenever she put on a cold front, had become a loner.
She didn’t know why he kept coming to her, but that guy couldn’t treat her so rudely.
Jinhee still believed that she could bring Jihun under her control with her playful words.
But then.
Jihun’s body in front of her moved slightly backward.
“Ohoho!! Kang Jihun~ Did you avoid that?”
Coming over to the food truck was Sung Changhoon.
He had been tormenting Jihun without reason throughout middle and high school and had been Jinhee’s long-time crush.
When Jihun found out that he could become a Class E Hunter through awakening and get into Hunter Academy, he couldn’t be entirely happy.
It was because he had heard that Sung Changhoon, who had tormented him for a long time, also awakened as a Class C Hunter and entered the academy at a similar time.
Moreover, he was a Class 6 Hunter, which was incomparable to Jihun’s Class 11.
Although he was slightly lower than Yoo Jung, whom Jihun had been crushing on for a long time, a Class C Hunter in Class 6 was a level that Jihun couldn’t even look at.
While waiting for the hot dog, Jihun’s sparkling eyes, which had been shining, suddenly turned cold.
“Chang… Changhoon, hello!”
Yoon Jinhee, who was standing next to him, shyly greeted Changhoon as soon as she noticed him.
With the appearance of Sung Changhoon, Jinhee’s noisy thoughts were completely focused on him.
“Jinhee? Are you still hanging out with this guy? He’s not your boyfriend, right, if it’s just this extent?”
“Oh, um… it’s not like that! I was just waiting because I had something to say!”
“What were you waiting for? A hot dog? Hey, is this yours?”
Sung Changhoon reaches out his hand and grabs the hot dog that has just appeared.
“Oh… stu… student, this is my friend’s.”
Even though Jinhee cautiously speaks up, Sung Changhoon immediately lowers his head, revealing that he is the boss.
From C-rank hunters, each one of them was an officially recognized combat force by the country.
Although they had only been in the academy for a year of training, starting from C-rank hunters, they were considered hunters of a certain level that could receive recognition from society.
“Mmm, it’s tasty… but why so much cheese? Hey, why do you eat like this, so greasy?”
Taking Jinhee’s hot dog and eating it freely, Changhoon stands in front of Jinhee.
“But, how did you dodge the ice gun earlier? I shot it gently to avoid piercing your stomach, but it wasn’t an attack you should have been able to dodge. hehehehe, are you working hard in training?”
While swallowing more than half of the hot dog, Changhoon laughs mockingly at Jinhee.
“Chang…Changhoon, I need to talk to Jinhee for a moment…”
Jinhee, who had been watching silently, cautiously speaks to Changhoon.
Her attitude towards him is completely different from when she faced Jinhee.
I can feel every word she hesitantly says, carefully observing Changhoon’s reaction.
Standing a few steps away, Jinhoon walks towards them once again.
And then he looks back and forth between Jinhee and Changhoon.
“Why are you staring at me like that, you bastard? Can’t you pull yourself together? How about going somewhere and having a conversation for a change? Huh? Somewhere dark and deserted?”
While giggling, and stuffing the remaining hot dog into his mouth, Changhoon says something as if he has just thought of something.
“Oh right, right!!! Changhoon! Sung Changhoon!”
Jinhoon’s face becomes lively, as if he is impressed by his own recollection.
“Yeah… Jinhee, you didn’t like that guy, right? My memory is correct, isn’t it?”
Snap
At Jinhoon’s words, Jinhee’s face instantly burns with madness, and she lets out a gasp.
“Hey!! Kang Jinhoon!!”
Jinhoon approaches her with a cute expression on his blushed face and quietly says to her.
“Do men just move on when a woman is in pain by their side? Take this bastard with you and take care of him. From today, you two are a couple!”
With a smile on his face, Jihoon approached Changhoon, leaving behind incomprehensible words.
“Nursing? What nursing? What’s this guy talking about?”
Jinhee couldn’t understand Jihoon’s words, but she felt a shift in the atmosphere and a growing sense that something was going wrong.
