I Picked Up The Satan and Decided To Raise Her

Chapter 4: Car Accident

What can a person do in such a situation facing a speeding car? Most people would probably not even have time to react and would be turned into a pile of flesh.

But not everyone’s the same.

There are some martial experts out there who can easily handle situations like this. They can take on tigers and bears effortlessly.

Perhaps those people could, in the heat of the moment, slide under the car and then punch through the car’s chassis to subdue it.

Chen Ming certainly didn’t have that kind of strength. In fact, when the car’s high beams shone into his eyes, his mind went blank.

Whoosh!

The car zoomed past him, and the intense wind pressure stung his face, but a pair of slender arms behind him held him tightly, unmoved.

Boom!

The car crashed into the garden below, creating a deafening noise.

“What’s happening? What’s happening?”

The residents from nearby came out to see, either stepping out of their homes or peering out of their windows to the scene of the accident.

Chen Ming’s vision gradually returned to normal.

He stared dumbly at the damaged car below.

If he had taken just one more step forward earlier…

Cold sweat soaked his entire body, and in an instant, countless faces flashed through his mind, settling on the grief-stricken expressions of his parents and his sister.

“I… uh…”

He almost collapsed, using his hand to cover his mouth. Fear made him retch.

She grabbed the back of his collar, preventing him from falling. Her red eyes shifted between the wrecked car and the traffic light above, as if searching for something.

After a moment, she let out a sigh of relief.

She supported his arm and patted his back, asking, “Are you okay?”

“I… cough…”

Chen Ming slowly stood upright but still felt a bit weak. He looked at the damaged car and muttered casually, “Damn!”

“…chuckle.”

She, with her red eyes, actually laughed.

Annoyed, he said, “What’s so funny?”

“Nothing.”

“Mocking someone’s misfortune is not nice.”

“It’s fine; the misfortune is over now.”

She looked to the side again, double-checking, and then said, “It’s gone now.”

“Gone? What do you mean?” Chen Ming asked.

“The Scavenger, I don’t know what you call them here.”

The Scavenger? What did she mean?

Chen Ming wiped his mouth with a tissue, feeling much better now that he had stopped retching. His pounding heart had also calmed down.

Then, they both returned to the roadside, where a small crowd had gathered. Someone had already called the police, and help would arrive soon.

Perhaps they would need eyewitness accounts, but nowadays, nearly every car had a dashboard camera, and there were security cameras everywhere. Eyewitnesses might not be necessary.

“Ugh, how could someone drive like that? This driver should just go and die,” Chen Ming couldn’t help but be impolite, still feeling very emotional after narrowly escaping death.

She, on the other hand, looked at the damaged car and said, “Don’t worry; he’s about to die.”

“What did you say? Is that person in trouble?” Chen Ming asked.

“No, he’s just injured, but it’s not a big deal. Maybe there will be some issues with the car,” she replied.

She glanced at a rooftop nearby, and Chen Ming followed her gaze but didn’t see anything.

Frowning, he asked, “Are you serious about this?”

Before she could answer, Chen Ming shouted, “It’s on fire!”

People around them were all alarmed.

Chen Ming looked over, and indeed, the car was now engulfed in flames. In the glow of the fire, you could even see gasoline spilling out. If it ignited completely…

“Shouldn’t we do something?!” Chen Ming exclaimed.

Despite his earlier wish for the driver’s misfortune, he didn’t actually want anyone to die. Initially, people were prepared to go and rescue the driver, but now, with the risk of an explosion, no one dared to approach the vehicle. After hesitating for half a minute, Chen Ming was about to rush forward.

She furrowed her brow and firmly held his shoulder, saying, “What are you doing?”

“Rescuing people! Nowadays, cars don’t just explode like that. But if we don’t act now, the people inside might burn to death or suffocate.”

“But didn’t you wish for his death?”

“Who wishes for that? Everyone hopes that everyone is safe.”

Chen Ming struggled against her grip, but to his surprise, her slender, white arm was surprisingly strong.

She said with a frown, “No, I can’t let you take the risk.”

“Why not?”

“Because this is a deal. You gave me food, and I protect you.”

“A deal? What…”

Suddenly, Chen Ming understood. Her earlier question, “How much is your life worth?” meant she was actually asking him to make an offer to buy his life?

And he had offered a pancake…

Damn, he suddenly felt like his life was incredibly cheap.

She shook her head and said, “Although it’s not an equal exchange, a deal is a deal, and I can’t let you die.”

Chen Ming finally grasped the situation. This seemingly beautiful and somewhat cute girl concealed a tremendous secret.

He did want to ask more questions, but the situation was urgent.

Pressing down her hand on his shoulder, he said, “Fine, but you better keep your end of the bargain. We need to get away from here quickly!”

“That wasn’t really a trade. The pancake was a gift, and thank you for saving me once, so you haven’t broken any deal,” Chen Ming explained.

She maintained her composure, not swayed by his words. She eventually let go of his hand.

He sighed and added, “Don’t worry; I promise I won’t get into trouble.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

With that, she finally released her grip.

Without another word, Chen Ming rushed towards the overturned car. She watched his back, her red eyes illuminated by the flames, seemingly burning like a fire…

Amid the crowd’s exclamations, Chen Ming reached the car. Some people shouted things like, “Young man, be careful,” but he didn’t pay much attention.

He arrived at the overturned vehicle and could see the middle-aged man inside, unconscious, with a flushed face, likely due to excessive alcohol consumption.

Drunk driving was a crime! This jerk was deliberately causing trouble for society.

He attempted to open the car door, but it wouldn’t budge. The interior was already filled with thick smoke. Breaking the windshield seemed to be the only option, but he had no tools.

Wait, tools…

He pulled out his phone.

“Damn it! I’ve only had it for a year.”

Without hesitation, he grabbed his phone and started smashing the car window. He couldn’t help but wish he had a Nokia at that moment…

“Young man, come over here! Well done!”

When Chen Ming managed to pull the man out, a few burly men came over and helped carry the injured man away.

The bystanders applauded.

However, Chen Ming was exhausted, staring at his damaged phone. He sighed, “Sigh…”

Sitting on the ground, he looked at the car slowly becoming a fiery inferno. The fire department arrived quickly and extinguished the flames, while the police maintained order and set up a cordon.

They even asked Chen Ming to provide a statement.

After catching his breath, he remembered something and looked around. He then stood up and noticed the white-haired figure moving away.

“Wait!”

Chen Ming hurriedly chased after her, realizing he had many questions to ask.

But first…

Maybe he should ask for her contact information?
