Chapter 398
“Feels refreshing~”
Although she knew it was an inappropriate comment to make on the battlefield, Peymin muttered carelessly as she swatted away three approaching Orcs with her hands.
As the count of slain monsters reached the triple digits, the creatures backed away with fearful expressions from the two sisters. Naturally occupying the wide space, they looked at each other and spoke up.
“I feel disgusted.”
“Oh, I was thinking the same thing.”
Had they ever eaten this much in their entire lives? Starved for a lifetime, the two sisters devoured the incoming prey until their bellies threatened to burst.
Eating flesh and devouring souls.
With a sensation that excited their brains, Peymin and Hazel gazed at the Hydra and Cyclops blocking their advance.
“Won’t we explode if we eat those guys?”
“Still… they must taste good.”
Hazel nodded in agreement to that statement.
For the two of them who had suffered from hunger for so long, the feast laid out before them was nothing short of heavenly.
“True that!”
Peymin nodded her head twice at Hazel’s reply.
As if hearing their conversation, the circle widened even further. It was a natural instinctual fear that living beings possessed.
When touched by a woman in a restraining suit, it was as if one disappeared upon contact, and they had seen several times that injuring a tired-looking woman caused one to lose their soul.
“Running away won’t change anything.”
Unless one could escape to a very far away place, there was always a limit to fleeing since the Observer and Johann restricted the field. Ignoring the uselessly fleeing monsters, Peymin and Hazel moved towards the Hydra.
The Hydras, maintaining their circle, gazed at the approaching sisters with tense eyes. They sensed these were not foes to be trifled with.
The 27 heads exchanged cautious glances.
“Hey, you go first.”
“No, I’m the oldest, so the younger one should go.”
“Run, youngest.”
The gaze filled with the gravity of hierarchy fell upon the youngest Hydra, who reluctantly stepped forward first with a woeful expression.
The youngest Hydra, with its mouth full of corrosive liquid, thrust out its nine heads. It was a shallow tactic to breathe out and prevent them from approaching.
Though the surrounding monsters would suffer greatly, what did that matter if it meant keeping oneself alive? Acidic breath erupted from the youngest Hydra’s mouth. In response, the other siblings released their own breath without hesitation.
“Ugh, the smell.”
Peymin uttered plainly and then jumped up with Hazel, hand in hand. Twirling in the air, they eventually released each other and spread their palms.
Peymin used her palm as a launchpad.
“I’ll go first!”
“There’s no up or down.”
Hazel shot off in a different direction while eyeing the monsters at her landing point.
The monsters, about to be crushed by a calamity brought upon by others, tried to retreat with fearful expressions, but it wouldn’t be easy to create distance on a battlefield teeming with 40,000 living beings.
“You guys have a lot of wounds.”
Hazel’s kitchen knife sliced through the Ogre’s skin, exposing its red flesh.
The Ogre swung its hand to try and swat her away, but Hazel’s hand naturally moved faster to plunge into its insides.
She retrieved a bloodied hand, holding a translucent object.
“Ogre’s soul. Tastes like a delicate steak.”
She opened her mouth wide and inserted the Ogre’s soul. Each chew of the Ogre’s soul brought a different satisfaction compared to normal food.
‘I wonder if my little sister is doing well…’
Her gaze shifted from the ruined Ogre’s belly to Peymin. Spotting Peymin flying off to escape the acidic breath, she noticed all the heads of the youngest Hydra had vanished and leaped down from the Ogre’s belly.
“Hydra’s soul. I wonder if it’s delicious?”
Muttering to herself, she hummed a tune. This was the first time she’d ever experienced consuming souls so freely, and it naturally made her feel good.
“It’s worth the long wait. After it’s over, I don’t know if I can hold on, but…”
Could a gourmet who had learned the taste of heaven withstand hunger?
Hazel thought as she chewed on a nearby stray soul.
‘It’ll be fine somehow.’
For now, let’s just focus on the battle, the psychotic sister thought.
“Then, should I start going to help Peymin?”
Hazel’s steps gradually quickened until she began to sprint at a speed where afterimages were visible.
While effortlessly dealing with the nearby monsters, she caught sight of Peymin, who was fighting another Hydra, and approached the youngest Hydra.
“There’s still a soul left.”
Hazel’s kitchen knife sliced through the Hydra’s flesh and seized the soul that had not yet departed the body.
It flailed desperately like the soul of a massive creature, but it couldn’t escape Hazel’s grasp, which had grown stronger after devouring countless souls.
“Pops with a tingly sensation.”
A surge of power coursed through her body.
Unlike the wretched souls of other monsters, the Hydra’s soul provided her with immense strength.
“Big sister! You’re too slow!”
“Sorry. The Hydra’s soul tasted good.”
At her response, Peymin licked the blood off her hand. It was blood mixed with acid, but she didn’t mind. If she were wounded enough to this extent, she wouldn’t have had her powers sealed while wearing a restraining suit.
“It’s a tingly sensation.”
“Let’s deal with the rest and go to the dragon.”
“Got it.”
Their newly formed attacks shot towards the Hydras simultaneously. Naturally, the Hydras, unable to just sit back and take it, collectively resisted, but they should have done that long ago if they wanted to handle the sisters.
Their breath missed due to the sisters’ swift movements, and the massive body leading the physical assault was torn apart entirely by Peymin’s gestures.
The Hydra that attacked Hazel was sliced by her little kitchen knife and began to lose its soul.
Monsters that could destroy several cities with their sheer presence, feared by mankind, were being effortlessly butchered by the Quartz sisters.
“Hmm. This is enough.”
Since power requires accumulating kills to grow stronger, they had taken down enough powerful monsters to face the dragon.
“I wonder what the dragon will taste like~”
Their gazes met. Of course, what they were staring at was the dragon.
The greatest barrier of this battle.
A dragon bigger than even the legendary dragon was rampaging, causing devastation among the Imperial army. The death toll was already close to 5,000.
“Let’s hurry. I can’t show my face if more die.”
Hazel nodded silently, her gaze already fixed on the dragon.
Having endured her urges through self-harm for so long and now having consumed various souls, she was half-controlled by her appetite.
“Let’s go.”
“Yeah.”
Peymin and Hazel concentrated their strength in their toes and sprang forth. The sisters shot forward with a power incomparable to before, rapidly closing in on the distant dragon.
And surely, the dragon was aware of this.
The increasingly growing presence from afar awakened a sense of crisis in the dragon. It had never felt threatened by any other being except the Observer throughout its entire life, but now it sensed danger for the first time.
“Ha! This is freaking tough!”
Geren clicked his tongue, looking at his fist which barely made an impact. Like other legends, each of them cursed while wielding their weapons. They had been holding off for thirty minutes, tormenting the dragon’s legs.
The dragon showed no major reactions aside from swatting its legs as if swatting flies. Even a powerful strike infused with aura was barely a scratch to a creature of such monstrous size.
At least, it did buy them some time while it flailed its legs, which was a consolation.
However, the sisters’ abilities were of a different nature…
Not aura, nor magic, but bizarre powers.
Without knowing the source of their strength or gauging their power, the dragon recognized that it could not allow those two to approach.
Thus, the dragon began to gather flames at its mouth once more.
Destructive breath not unlike a calamity that had burned countless humans. Upon seeing this, Kalintz clicked his tongue and shouted at his comrades.
“Everyone! Get close to its legs!”
At Kalintz’s shout, the legends moved in unison to huddle near the dragon’s legs. The dragon wouldn’t breathe its fire under its own legs.
Fortunately, his judgment was correct.
The dragon’s attention was focused on the approaching slaughterers from afar.
At last, the fifth breath erupted from the dragon’s mouth.
Flames of calamity.
The sisters’ choice was…
“Big sister, throw me!”
“Okay.”
Hazel grabbed Peymin’s hand, spun her around, and hurled her.
As Peymin shot upward into the sky, Hazel kicked off the ground and accelerated.
The dragon’s choice was the former.
“I wonder if it’s hot.”
Peymin uttered nonsensically, her face filled with joy as she locked eyes with the dragon.
In that fleeting moment.
A blast of fire erupted from the dragon’s mouth, filling the view with flames.
With the spectacle of flames enveloping her, Peymin smiled and murmured.
“That’s the wrong answer.”
Peymin swung her hand.
